Chapter 27
Adeline sat in the treatment room while the doctor tended to her wound.[]
Suddenly, the door burst open as a tall, imposing man stormed in like he was ready to commit murder, startling the doctor.]
Adeline glanced back. “It’s fine. He’s my bo-” She stopped herself mid–word, switching from “husband” to “boss.“]
Tristan’s throat seemed constricted. He approached the doctor. “Is she alright? Will there be any permanent damage?“[]
“Just a superficial wound. She’ll be fine.“]]
The doctor, uninterested in their relationship drama, finished treating Adeline’s wound and prescribed some topical
medication.
Adeline thanked him and left.[]
Tristan followed closely behind, insisting on paying her medical bill and collecting her prescription, playing the role of the devoted husband.[]
Adeline couldn’t be bothered to argue.]]
Outside the hospital, she took out her phone to call a rideshare. Tristan snatched it from her hand, put his arm around her shoulders, and forcibly guided her to the parking lot. He opened the passenger door, pushed her in, then got into the driver’s seat.]
He slammed the door shut, instantly muffling the outside noise.[]
The atmosphere was suffocating.]
“You blocked my number. What, trying to punish me by getting yourself killed?” He turned to look at her, his expression both irritated and exhausted.
Adeline: “…“]
She stared at his thunderous face for a moment before bursting into laughter.]
Her heart had been so heavy, but his ridiculous accusation actually amused her.]]
He betrayed her, and somehow she was punishing him by endangering herself?]
How could someone be so goddamn narcissistic?]
“Don’t flatter yourself. Your conscience is safe. Now give me back my phone.” Adeline reached for her phone in his hand, her tone dripping with contempt.[]
Tristan moved it away. “Look, I get it–I lied about Portugal. But you crossed a line back there. Did you have to humiliate her until she cried? She’s just a sheltered rich kid who doesn’t know any better. You’re supposed to be the adult here, not stooping to her level.“]
Adeline listened to his twisted logic, his description of Evelyn, the unconscious affection that slipped into his tone…]]

Chapter 27
Tristan, do you even hear yourself?
After a long silence, she spoke, her voice reflecting the exhaustion of a completely broken heart. “Fine. I won’t embarrass your precious princess anymore, and I won’t interfere with whatever’s going on between you two. But keep her the hell away from me. I don’t need her ‘youthful spontaneity‘ shoved in my face.“[]
“For Christ’s sake, I see her like a little sister. It’s not what you think.” Tristan frowned.[]
“Right. A sister,” Adeline suppressed the urge to confront him, to throw all her evidence in his face. “Whatever. I overreacted. I misunderstood. Congratulations on your new sister.“[]
“Just drive already.” Adeline felt a bone–deep chill. She pulled the jacket tighter around herself, burying her nose in the collar where the warm sandalwood scent lingered.]
Tristan finally noticed the high–quality smoke–gray men’s suit jacket she was wearing, obviously custom–tailored. “Whose jacket is that?“]
Adeline turned to look out the window. As if to mock his “sister” comment, she replied, “My brother’s. My new adopted brother.”
His expression turned murderous as he yanked the jacket off her and threw it out the window.[]
Adeline was furious. She got out to retrieve it–she needed to return it to its owner.[]
Seeing her actually going to pick it up, Tristan pulled her back and forcefully kissed her.
Adeline clenched her lips shut.[]
Feeling her resistance, he used his hand to force her mouth open, his tongue invading hers, domineering and unreasonable.[]
When he finally pulled away, his heavy breath fell on her face. “Don’t try to provoke me like this. You should think about other people’s safety.”
Adeline was completely speechless.[]
The jacket was never recovered.]]
She had promised to clean and return it. []
What would she do now?

After the day’s ordeal, Adeline developed a fever that night.[]
Tristan stayed home, making her chicken soup, feeding her, giving her the illusion that perhaps he still loved her.]
At midnight, her fever hadn’t broken, and she felt dizzy and miserable.[]
Buzz–Buzz-
Tristan’s phone on the nightstand vibrated.[]
Adeline propped herself up as they both looked at the phone. The time was 12:35 AM.]

The name flashing on the screen was “Sugar Baby.“[]
What an intimate nickname…]

nerves.
