Chapter 44

Chapter 44
At some point during the brief attack, I started screaming, letting out everything that I felt towards Corbin, unsure if I would ever be able to stop on my own initiative.

The cracking sound of my fist breaking his cheekbone, and the squelching sounds of his blood being mauled around satisfied a furious animal deep within me. I do not know what it looked like, me giving Corbin what he deserves, but it must have been a shocking sight as it took everyone a while to jump to his rescue. Either that, or they agreed with him needing the shit kicked out of him for what he has done.

Beaux roared in his face; my jaw stretched wide, and my canines erupted from my gums. I could feel the gold in my eyes flare brightly to a bursting degree and it felt like my veins were going to explode from my skin. It took everything in me to stop a full transformation, and I know that if I did turn into Beaux’s true form then she would tear Corbin into iddy biddy pieces.

I felt arms wrap around my waist and pull, trying to get me away from the bloody scene that I was creating. But Beaux would not let me go quietly; I did not want to. Whoever had ahold of me was not strong enough to get me away and I soon felt another set of hands grasping at my arms. My hold over them weaned and eventually between the two sets of heavily muscled arms, I was separated kicking and snarling.

“What in the actual name of all holy fucks given is going on with her eyes?” Dane panted close-by. He sounded breathless and his voice was tinged with fear and questions.

“She’s of Alpha blood, and she’s tapped into her full strength. Hence why it is taking both of us.” Reid sounded just as worn-out from the struggle.

I lost energy quickly once I was drawn away from the focus of my rage. I stopped fighting and basically flopped into the arms that were still holding onto me. I leaned my head backwards onto a firm chest and rested my hands feebly on the limbs that were looped around me. The scent around the person I collapsed upon soothed my nerves, dousing the fiery anger in me; my prickling edges calmed, and I was able to think of other things than pummeling the man that destroys everything.

“You good to take her?”

“Yeh, I’m good. I think she’s got nothing left in her now.” Reid’s raspy voice sent a chill down my spine, extinguishing all rational thoughts, turning me into putty and making me shiver as my eyes closed.

Reid lifted me fireman-style; my legs were hanging freely over one arm as he cradled me with the other, my head still perfectly cushioned on him. I could feel him delicately push my hair away from my neck, before the sparks broke out across my exposed, sensitive skin as he nuzzled his nose in. I heard him inhale deeply, devouring my scent and purr in contentment.

“Ummm...dude? Wanna move it along? Y'know, somewhere private perhaps?”

“Hmm?” Reid hummed, appeased for the time being. He sounded relaxed for the first time in days, his voice was huskier than normal, deeper.

“You should take her back, man. You seem to be a bit excited at the moment and everyone can see it; you’ve got a good tent going on with your jeans.” Dane tried whispering the last part trying to be discreet, but as you know, we all heard it.

Corbin was making a fuss, rolling on the ground sobbing and crying out for help, but as far as I could hear, no-one tried to assist him.

“Fucking wuss. Get some of the guards that aren’t on duty to carry him to the hospital. Hopefully a few scars will teach him a lesson or two.” Reid was not impressed with his dad and did not give a shit about his well-being. More than likely, it was the mate bond at work, making him sympathetic towards me after what his dad had done to my family. “Oh, and shut your mouth about my fucking erection, right? Bloody thing is getting crushed.”

Reid tried shifting and shaking one of his legs in an attempt to get his generously sized cock to move to a more comfortable position. Going by his frustrated huff though, it did not work as he had hoped. If I had the energy to, I would have giggled at his considerable predicament.

“So, what you gunna do with her then?”

“Get lost, you weirdo. I'm not telling you shit.” He was going into protective mode, pulling me closer to him and growling faintly. Reid abruptly swung around and headed back to the Packhouse through the woods using his Alpha speed, carelessly racing over all the debris that littered the floor.

He managed to carry me with ease, like I weighed nothing to him. I was kept tightly held into his chest; my face nuzzled in as I tried to stay awake through the gentle rocking. I must have dozed off at some point though, because I woke up as Reid tried to lay me down softly on his bed as if I was a delicate flower. He slowly pulled his arms out from underneath my tired body, then shifted the hair that had fallen in my face with one of his fingers.

If I was not so exhausted, I would have tried to dissect this new behaviour of Reid’s. Instead, I asked the first question that invaded my mind.

“What’s your wolf’s name?” I croaked, opening my eyes just enough to see his shocked face a few inches from mine.

Reid stood up straight, looking like he was contemplating the idea of answering me. He looked around the room as if he was thinking of just ignoring me and walking away without answering, but then he froze and huffed. He grabbed one of the single chairs and pulled it to the bed, sat down and leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees.

“It’s uh, Gunner.” For once, Reid did not sound defensive or aggressive when he talked to me, it was like we were just having a simple conversation for the first time.

“Gunner? I like it. What about Dane’s wolf, what’s he called?”

“Sampson, but Dane calls him Boots most of the time to wind him up.” Reid had a small smile on his face as he remembered the nickname and how his best friend liked to tease. It showed that Dane’s humour did not always piss him off, unlike how he usually reacted.

I sniggered at the ridiculous alternative name that Dane used for his wolf, “Why?”

“His wolf is grey with white feet that look like he’s wearing a pair of boots.” Reid chuckled aswell as me.

There was a momentary peaceful silence that passed between us.

“What does your wolf think of me? Does he approve of the mate bond not being accepted?”

I watched as Reid’s posture changed from relaxed, chilled to closed-off quicker than it should have been possible. He sat back on the chair with his back straight then crossed his arms, making his biceps bulge more than usual, but he still chose to answer me.

“He wants his mate. And that's all I’m gunna say about it.”

I swear that I could see and feel the wall going back up between us, firmly in place never to move again.

I hummed in acknowledgement, too tired to choose a response for that. There was so much that I wanted to say, but instead I dozed off into the land of crazy dreams.
