Chapter 220

Chapter 220

On the fifth afternoon in the room, just as the sunset, a thick fog suddenly enveloped the school.

The fog grew denser, surrounding them until they could no longer see the outside world. The four of them quickly realized that the exit had finally opened.

Relying on their memory of the directions, they walked from the dormitory to the school gate. The entire campus was deserted, with only the sound of their footsteps echoing in the silence.

This wasn't their first mission; they knew they were now completely isolated from the people in the roomby the fog.

A dilapidated bus, like a ghost, waited silently outside the school gate, as if it had been there for a long time.

Once on the bus, Charles headed straight for the back seat. As soon as he sat down, exhaustion washed over him like a tidal wave, and everyone quickly fell asleep, perhaps hoping to escape the endless fear in their dreams.

Over the past five days, everyone's nerves and willpower had been stretched to the limit. Now, they could finally relax, but they were utterly exhausted.

When Charles woke up, the bus had already stopped in front of his Tower House. The night was deep, and he had no idea how much time had passed.

After getting off the bus, he glanced at his watch and saw that the hour hand had already passed midnight.

The night wind blew, sending a chill through his collar. Charles tightened his coat and pushed open the door to Tower House. In the dimly lit hall, the fireplace flickered with a weak flame, and Jeffrey's lonely figure was curled up in the corner, poking at the fire with an iron rod.

"Charles, you're finally back!"

"I heard a firework outside and knew it was you. Come sit down, the sweet potatoes are just done."

Seeing Charles return safely, Jeffrey's face lit up with a bright smile as he handed him a steaming hot sweet potato.

Charles's stomach growled. He peeled off the charred skin and took a big bite of the golden, soft flesh, steam escaping from his mouth as he let out a raspy sound from the heat.

"Is it just you in Tower House? Where is everyone else?" Charles asked between bites, his words muffled.

Jeffrey grinned and replied, "Rebecca had some family matters to attend to, so she went back early."

"I was supposed to come in the morning, but there was some trouble at the guild. The others couldn't decide what to do, so they called me back to handle it. I left in a hurry and missed dinner, so I had to roast some sweet potatoes. How do you like them? I grew them myself in the yard."

Charles stuffed the remaining half of the sweet potato into his mouth and nodded vigorously. "These are really good. I haven't had such sweet ones in a long time."

Sweet potatoes roasted over natural charcoal have a completely different flavor from those baked in an oven. Plus, these sweet potatoes didn't have that "healthy" vegetable chemical taste. The first bite was filled with a rich charcoal aroma, followed by the sweet, delicate texture of the flesh, making it feel like all the cold was driven away by this delicious treat.

"My family was very poor. The happiest thing in winter was sitting around the stove roasting sweet potatoes. I was the oldest, so I always roasted them for my younger siblings, but I often took a bite before giving it to them, haha..." Jeffrey chuckled, a hint of nostalgia in his eyes. "Anyway, how did your mission go this time? What about the boy you took with you?"

Faced with Jeffrey's question, Charles wiped his hands with a napkin, then looked up with a playful expression and said, "Guess."

Jeffrey was momentarily stunned by Charles's riddle, then quickly understood and comforted him, "Room missions are always dangerous. It's already a big deal that you made it back safely. Saving others is just doing your best..."

Charles looked at Jeffrey's sympathetic eyes and replied softly, "I was the one who did it."
