Bumpy Flight
Bumpy Flight
The trip to the airport was filled with silence as i sat alone in the back seat of the SUV, watching the cars move by me, all I could think of was my entire life up to the very point that somehow had me cornered, the death of my father still left a sore that hasn't healed, not after the many years I had spent with a man who i no longer knew, Conrad wasn't the same man who could take a bullet for me, a lot had changed about him, he had become more distant from me, his ways and movements no longer made any sense, i could tell from miles that he was up to something but what evidence would I go up with?.
"Ma'am, you need to step out of the car please" My Chauffeur called gently, more thoughts flooded my head as my son ran from me anytime I approached him. My husband had become his new superhero and I, the villain who wants to kill his superhero. We boarded the jet, taking my seat far from my son and his father, they seemed to be enjoying their moments together, not giving a care in the world as we took to the skies.
The Chef brought my food but my appetite was far gone, I couldn't even bear to swallow anything down my throat.
"Michael, will you come join mummy?" I called out to my son but he looked at me like an alien and turned around, not willing to move an inch from his father. Tears slowly filled my eyes, I knew nothing of Conrad's plans but they were nothing short of pain and misery.
Barely few minutes later, I could see my son sobbing silently with Conrad rubbing his hair gently and whispering into his ear, my body itched to hear every single word of their conversation, i walked straight to my son, held his hand, and knelt at him, his eyes were filled with tears.
"Michael, what's wrong, talk to mummy" I urged but got the look of disappointment as he kept staring at me like I was his enemy.
"Leave us alone!" he screamed at me, I was stunned for some moments, i couldn't believe what I saw, none of it made sense as I stared into his eyes, what gave my son the nerve to talk back at me?, This certainly wasn't his idea.
"Michael, talk to me, I'm here for you"
"Let the boy be, he doesn't crave your freaking attention, he wants to be left alone, you should at least respect the boy's wish!" Conrad lashed out at me, his face masked by a frown. I was pissed, I clenched my fist in anger but couldn't make another silly move, not with my son.
"What are you doing to my son?, Why are you turning him against me?" I screamed.
"Mummy go away!" Michael defended his father boldly like he had rehearsed it for a long time, i could see the little control Conrad was using to manipulate my boy.
Conrad stood up and approached me, his face so close to mine and his lips just a few millimeters away.
"I haven't done anything to our son, if there's anyone who lacks self-control in front of their kids, it has to be you, Michael doesn't feel safe around his mother, you simply can't blame the boy, he's young and scared of the very woman who birthed him"
"What do you think you're doing Conrad?, Is this some sort of game to you?, You're giving our son room to choose between both parents?, Are you freaking insane?" I yelled at the top of my voice.
The air hostess and other staff didn't dare to interfere as they watched from a distance with their lips shut and eyes feasting on our argument.
"I'm not doing anything, your bad attitude is going to be the end of you and you know it"
"It's the truth" he whispered, i had the urge to slap his cheeks but I couldn't, my anger had taken hold of me but I won't succumb, not again.
"Come on, do it, prove how you have no self-control, Arabella, prove it to your son and everyone on this jet!" Conrad screamed.
I tried to turn away but he held my hand and forced me to look into his eyes.
"Prove that you're a lunatic!, Prove it!" he screamed again.
"Please stop fighting!" Michael screamed with tears in his eyes, I was short of words as I stood facing Conrad with no words in my mouth.
"Please Mr Conrad, please take it easy" the hostess finally dared to speak up as she calmly approached him.
"Is that what you really feel about me?, Is that what this is about?" I said amidst tears that gathered in my eyes, i couldn't even look at his face as he reminded me of every decision I ever made just to be with him, be with the same man who now has the guts to call me a lunatic.
"It’s a shame really, your transfer of aggression has gotten to our little boy who's innocent, can't wait to get off this plane with you," he said with disgust but before he could finish, the jet shook violently and i nearly fell but was held back by the hostess, i quickly took my seat and said a short prayer in my mind.
"Daddy, what's going on?" Michael asked innocently as he held Conrad's hands so tightly.
"Everything will be fine" he assured Michael, allowing my innocent boy to rest his head on his chest.
"We are experiencing some major turbulence, we will sail through this ladies and gentlemen!" The pilot's voice sent a sign of relief across my body.
The atmosphere in the jet felt calm after a while with me maintaining my sanity in my seat, Micheal took off his seat belts and walked past me to the rest room without even looking at my face, not even once, i remained calm and watched as he took some steps back but in that moment, another turbulence struck hard and my boy fell with a loud thud, i took off my seat belts and rushed to meet my boy, i tried to rescue my boy but to my surprise, Micheal didn't flinch for a second.
"Give me your hand dear, I need to secure you in your seat, this flight might get really bumpy," I said, stretching my hand but he simply stared at me, watching my lips keenly like I was speaking a foreign language.
"No Mom, I'm fine, I don't need your help!" he replied and got off the ground, i watched as he walked past me, i didn't even know what to say or do, I was completely weakened. I took my seat in defeat as I caught Conrad's glare on my face, he had a smile like he was deeply pleased by Michael's action.
"We will be landing shortly!" the pilot revealed and I felt another sign of relief but my heart was heavy, my husband has turned my son against me, against his mother, I stared at them having happy moments while the jealousy ate me away.
