Chapter 82 Who Am I???
♤SEBASTIAN♤
“Yasmin, please, just calm down, okay?” I say, taking a step toward her, my hands raised in surrender.
“I swear to you, I don’t understand what you’re talking about. You’re letting your imagination run wild because of everything you’ve been through lately.”
“You’re lying!” she screams, her voice breaking completely as tears begin streaming down her face.
“You’re lying to me again! Everybody keeps lying! You, Jonathan, Aunt Sofia… everybody is lying straight to my face! Why can’t anyone just tell me the truth? Why do I have to feel like a complete stranger in my own life?”
She clutches her head with both hands, sobbing so hard that her entire body shakes.
“Do you have any idea how frustrating it is?” she cries, her eyes boring into mine with an agonizing pain that breaks my heart in a thousand pieces.
“To know that everybody around me knows who I am, but I don’t? And you… you know everything about me, Sebastian.”
She presses a trembling hand against her chest.
“I can feel it every time you touch me. I know we were close. We were so close back then.”
Her voice cracks.
“I think… I think we were in a relationship.”
My knees nearly buckle right there.
She knows.
She remembers.
“But why won’t you tell me?” she whispers, taking another slow step until she’s standing right in front of me, her hot breaths fanning across my face.
“Why are you keeping me in the dark? Are you hiding the truth for your own reasons? Are you using me… just like Jonathan?”
“No, no, no…” I cup her tear-streaked face with both hands.
“Yasmin, look at me. It’s not what you think.”
“Then what is it?!” she screams, swatting my hands away.
A few tourists passing by glance at us before quietly moving on.
“Everybody around me is using me, lying to me, manipulating me.” She wipes at her tears with the back of her hands.
“I’m tired, Sebastian. I want to live my own life, not the one arranged for me by you, your father, or whoever the hell thinks it’s okay to play with my life.”
She covers her face and sobs.
“I don’t want to be a pawn in your family’s sick feud anymore.”
Slowly, she lowers her hands. Her eyes are red, swollen, and filled with pain.
“Talk to me, Seb. Tell me the truth.” Her voice softens into a plea.
“You’re always saying you don’t want to lose me. You’re always saying you care about me more than anything. Then prove it. This is the moment I need you the most.”
She searches my face desperately.
“You’re the only person in this world I felt I could call tonight. Please… don’t disappoint me. Tell me who I am.”
I squeeze my eyes shut, a bitter lump forming in my throat as I shake my head.
No, the voice inside my head screams. I can’t tell her.
If I open that door, she’ll start asking questions. She’ll keep digging until she uncovers everything I worked so hard to bury.
Yes, Yasmin and I had a beautiful relationship, but like every couple, we had our ugly moments.
She believed I was hiding her from the society because I was ashamed of her background.
She thought I was embarrassed that she was a struggling artist… a poor, struggling artist she would say.
And then there were the secrets…
The terrible things she saw before she left.
I swallow the guilt, open my eyes, and force my expression into a cold wall of denial.
“I’m sorry, Yasmin. I really don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Slap!
The sharp crack of her palm against my left cheek echoes through the night. My head jerks to the side, my skin burning from the force of the slap.
“How dare you?” she growls, her entire body trembling with rage.
“I thought I meant something to you.” Tears continue to pour down her face.
“Are you doing this because you’re scared? Are you hiding everything because you don’t want me to remember what happened? What I saw… the thing that made me leave you and go to Spain?”
My entire body goes rigid.
Slowly, I turn back to face her, my eyes widening in horror.
The air leaves my lungs.
How could she remember leaving for Spain? How could she remember leaving me?
Does that mean she remembers everything? Does she remember that night?
Fear crashes through me.
She’s getting closer to the truth and the moment she remembers what happened that night…
It’s over. I’ll loose her… again.
She sees the shock on my face, and despite the tears still falling, her expression hardens.
“I knew it,” she chuckles bitterly.
“I knew you weren’t as good and righteous as you pretend to be. You’re hiding something from me, aren’t you?”
“Yasmin, can you stop this madness,” I beg, my voice shaking as I take a cautious step toward her.
“I’ll ask you one last time, Sebastian,” she says quietly, backing away from me.
She reaches into the back pocket of her trousers and her hand comes back, she’s holding a long silver knife.
My heart leaps into my throat.
“Yasmin…” I screech, panic flooding every nerve in my body.
“What the hell are you doing with a knife?”
She doesn’t answer me. Instead, she slowly raises the blade and presses it against her own throat.
“YASMIN!” I roar.
It only fuels her anger.
She presses the blade harder against her skin.
“I’ll ask you one last time, Sebastian,” she growls, her eyes locking onto mine with a fierce determination that nearly shatters what’s left of my sanity.
“Who am I?”
