Chapter 12
As Felix drove, he recounted the events of the past few weeks.
In the back seat, Gideon’s fists were clenched so tight his knuckles were white. Finally, he cut in, his voice urgent.
“Aurora, I really do love you. It’s always been you! I just felt sorry for Stella because she was an orphan! I…”
“Just shut up!”
My mind was a chaotic mess of worry for Grandma Miller. I was in no mood for his excuses.
After I snapped at them, they both had the sense to stay quiet.
When I got out of the car, they both scrambled to follow, but I stopped them.
couldn’t risk Grandma Miller getting hurt because of me.
Gideon’s hand was shaking as he held the car door open. “Aurora, I…”
Don’t. I don’t need your apology.”
Alone, I opened the door to that closed apartment.
Even though I was prepared, my heart still seized with terror when a cord was instantly wrapped around my neck from behind.
n the corner, Grandma was tied tightly to a chair, completely still.
My eyes widened in horror, and I began to struggle wildly. “What did you do to her!”
What are you screaming about? I just gave her a few sleeping pills to keep her from making a fuss!”
Looking closer, I could see the gentle rise and fall of her chest. I finally let out a shaky breath of relief.
Aurora, did you see Felix and Gideon?”
My heart clenched. I denied it instantly.
No, aren’t they always with you? I was actually wondering why you came looking for me.”
couldn’t tell if she believed me, but the cord around my neck kept tightening.
Aurora, tell me, why are you so damn lucky?”
You were born with everything. Everyone treated you like you were some precious jewel to be cherished!”
Even when I tried to slander you, to frame you, they still loved you more.”
he was choking me. I could barely get any air. My hands were tied behind my back, so all I could do was crane my neck back, fighting for one last, desperate asp.
You… you were the one who won. How did they love me more? Ever since we were kids… they only ever believed you, only ever took your side. It was always ‘ou they loved.”
Shut up!”
She screamed, her voice cracking with hysteria as her grip tightened.
‘Love me? That was pity! Do you think I couldn’t tell!”
Their eyes were always filled with sympathy and compassion! And even that was something I had to earn by tearing open my old wounds and playing the victim over and over again!”
“Why? Why do you get to do nothing and still have so many people love you?”
‘Look, even this damn old hag who’s barely met you was mumbling ‘Don’t hurt Aurora, don’t hurt Aurora‘ before she passed out. You’re just so lovable, aren’t

you? You’re laughing at me Inside, aren’t you!”
“Laughing at how, after all my years of scheming, I still lost to you, still got abandoned by everyone! Well, today, I’m going to make you lose what
most!”
She finally released the cord, instead picking up a lighter from the table and stalking toward Grandma Miller.
I collapsed to the floor, coughing violently, as I used a small blade I’d hidden up my sleeve to saw at the ropes on my wrists.
“Aurora Durand, I’m going to make you regret this for the rest of your life!”
