CHAPTER 257: RECKLESS COMFORT

CHAPTER 257: RECKLESS COMFORT
The rain had been falling in steady, heavy sheets since dusk, slicking the dark asphalt of the city streets.

Giovanni killed the engine of his Jeep in the alley behind his apartment building.

He sat in the dark interior for a long moment, his hands resting on the steering wheel.

His knuckles were raw and bruised from a confrontation with one of Enzo’s former crew lieutenants. His shoulders throbbed with a dull, persistent ache. Every muscle in his neck was pulled tight from an eight-hour run across the eastern docks.

The city was shifting beneath Ombra’s weight. The streets were volatile and dark. Every decision required absolute, cold precision.

He let out a long, heavy breath that fogged the glass before unbuckling his belt.

Taking his leather vest from the passenger seat, he draped it over his shoulder and stepped out into the cool rain.

The elevator ride to his top-floor apartment was quiet, save for the rhythmic hum of the cables.

He pulled his keys from his pocket, unlocked the front door, and pushed it open, expecting the quiet, sterile silence he had grown accustomed to over the years.

Instead, the apartment was completely pitch-black.

No overhead lights illuminated the kitchen island. The glowing diagnostic monitors Maria usually had running on the dining table were shut down. Their dark screens reflected nothing.

The only light in the wide living room was the faint, silvery glow of the rain washing down the floor-to-ceiling balcony windows.

Giovanni dropped his keys onto the small entry console with a soft metal click.

He kicked off his heavy boots, stepping onto the dark hardwood floor in his socks.

"Maria?" he called out, his deep voice carrying softly through the open layout.

There was no verbal response.

As his eyes adjusted to the shadows, his sharp gaze caught a small, pale shape huddled in the center of the living room rug, right beside the sofa.

Maria was sitting with her knees drawn tightly against her chest. Her arms were wrapped around her shins. Her face was buried deep into the fleece of her oversized grey sweatshirt.

She looked tiny in the wide, shadowed room.

She was entirely motionless, but the silence was broken by the quiet, ragged hitch of her breath.

Giovanni’s heart gave a sudden, hard twist against his ribs.

All the cold, tactical detachment he carried on the streets dissolved instantly.

He tossed his vest onto the back of an armchair and walked across the hardwood, his footsteps silent as he approached her.

He dropped to his knees on the rug right beside her, the cool air from the balcony window brushing against his neck.

"Maria?" Giovanni asked softly, his tone dropping into a low, rich register that held none of his usual dry sarcasm.

Maria didn't lift her head.

At the sound of her name, her shoulders shook with a sharp, involuntary tremor. A stifled sob escaped her throat.

"Hey," Giovanni murmured, leaning closer.

He reached out with a broad, calloused hand, gently resting his palm against her shoulder. "What happened? Did something happen at the penthouse?"

The simple, steady warmth of his hand against her skin broke whatever fragile dam she had been holding together all evening.

Maria lifted her face from her knees, her cheeks flushed pink, her dark eyes red-rimmed and overflowing with hot, bitter tears.

A small, strangled cry tore from her chest, and before she could stop herself, she reached for him.

She threw her arms around his neck, burying her wet face directly into the warm crook where his shoulder met his throat.

Giovanni went rigid for a single heartbeat, caught off guard by the sheer, desperate force of her grip.

Instinct took over before his mind could rationalize the moment.

He slid his muscular arms around her waist, pulling her small, trembling body flush against his chest as he shifted his weight back onto the rug.

He held her tightly, anchoring her as her whole body shook with gasping, broken sobs.

"She hates me, Giovanni," Maria wept into his collarbone, her fingers digging desperately into the fabric of his dark shirt.

"She screamed at me... she threw the tray... she shattered everything... She told me I was useless and that I should just go back to London..."

Giovanni closed his eyes, a heavy, understanding sigh slipping past his lips.

He pressed his face into her dark, damp curls, inhaling the faint, sweet scent of rain and vanilla that always clung to her.

He rubbed his large hand in slow, steady circles across her back, feeling the frantic, nervous rise and fall of her ribs.

"She doesn't hate you, shorty," Giovanni whispered into her hair, his deep voice vibrating straight into her chest.

"Bella is drowning right now. When people feel like they're drowning, they lash out at the only people safe enough to catch them. She's terrified."

"I just wanted to bring her something from home," Maria choked out, her voice cracking as she pulled back slightly to look at him.

"I just wanted to make her feel like herself again. But she looked at me like... like I was pitying her. I've never seen her look so broken, Giovanni."

Tears spilled over her lashes, glinting in the dark, silvery light from the window.

"She was the one who kept me alive when we had nothing. If she's ruined, I don't know what to do."

Her lips were parted, her chest heaving as she searched his face for an answer, for reassurance, for anything solid in a world that felt like it was tearing itself apart.

Giovanni stared down at her. His hand slid from her back to gently frame the side of her soft, flushed face.

His thumb reached out, brushing away a wet tear from her cheekbone, lingering along the delicate curve of her jawline.

Looking at her like this, completely stripped of her sharp sass and defensive sarcasm, something raw flared in Giovanni’s chest.

The unaddressed electricity that had been humming beneath every shared glance, every late-night argument, and every accidental touch over the last several days suddenly exploded into a thick, suffocating heat that filled the quiet room.

The rain hammered relentlessly against the glass panes, sealing them inside their own isolated world.

"You're not useless, Maria," Giovanni said, his voice dropping an octave, turning dark, thick, and rough with an intensity that made her breath catch in her throat.

"You are the smartest, fiercest girl I have ever met. Don't you ever let anyone make you feel small. Not even her."

Maria’s breath hitched.

Her dark eyes darted from his dark, searching gaze down to his mouth, then back up again.

Her pulse spiked violently, a heavy heat blooming low in her stomach, pushing away the cold grief, the helplessness, and the lingering sting of Bella's words.

"Giovanni..." she whispered, her hands shifting from his shirt to rest flat against his muscular chest, feeling the heavy, rapid thud of his heart beneath her palms.

Giovanni didn't answer with words.

He leaned down, tilting her chin up, and captured her lips with his in a sudden, deep, overwhelming kiss.

A soft, sharp gasp escaped Maria’s throat into his mouth.

Her fingers instantly flexed into his shirt before entangling themselves into the short, thick hair at the nape of his neck.

The kiss wasn't slow, and it wasn't delicate. It was born of shared exhaustion, bruised knuckles, silent tears, and a fierce, reckless hunger to feel alive amidst the chaos around them.

Giovanni let out a low growl deep in his chest, shifting his weight until he was hovering over her on the plush rug.

His large, warm hands slid beneath the hem of her oversized sweatshirt, his calloused palms pressing against the smooth, delicate skin of her waist.

Maria shivered at the intense contrast of his rough hands against her bare skin.

She arched her back into his touch, her lips parting as he broke the kiss to trail a hot, demanding line of open-mouthed kisses along her jaw, down her neck, and over the sensitive dip of her collarbone.

"Giovanni..." she gasped out, her head falling back against the rug, her chest heaving as his hands pulled her body higher against his.

Giovanni paused, his chest rising and falling in heavy, ragged breaths.

He braced his weight on one forearm, his dark eyes burning down into hers with a raw, possessive heat that made her entire body tremble.

His thumb traced her lower lip, pressing lightly against her mouth.

"Tell me to stop," Giovanni rasped out, his voice thick and rough against her skin, his heart hammering like a war drum against his ribs.

"Tell me to stop right now, Maria, or I won't be able to."

Maria looked up into his dark, fierce eyes. Her hands slid up to cup his jaw, her fingers tracing the rough stubble along his face.

She pulled him back down toward her, her dark eyes flashing with a quiet, unwavering heat.

"Don't stop," Maria whispered softly, her voice breathless but resolute. "Please... don't stop."
