Chapter 36: A Careful Plan

Chapter 36: A Careful Plan
Renee’s POV

Andrew’s name glows on my screen as I stand before the mirror, one earring still missing.

I smile before I even answer.

“Hey,” I say softly, tucking the phone between my shoulder and ear as I reach for the jewelry box.

“Hey, beautiful,” he replies, his voice warm, familiar. “Are you getting ready?”

“I am,” I say, fastening the earring. “Can’t be late to my Dinner appointment.”

“With Mrs. Wayne?” he asks, though I already know he knows.

“Yes,” I confirm. “I need to see this gift she has so prepared for me.” I laughed lightly.

There’s a brief pause on the other end.

“You really think she’s bringing Clark with her?” Andrew asks.

I tilt my head, studying my reflection. Calm. Controlled. “I’m almost certain. She’s been too eager lately. Too proud. And she’s made it clear she wants to… fix me into her son’s life.”

Andrew exhales slowly. “Renee.”

“I know,” I say gently. “You’re about to warn me about getting close to Clark and his family again.”

“I just want you to be careful,” he says. “This isn’t as simple as you think it. This is a broken family with sharp edges. Do you want me to send someone with you? A bodyguard, at least?”

I chuckle lightly. “Andrew, it's just dinner. A public restaurant. Nothing dramatic is going to happen.”

“Nothing dramatic ever starts dramatic,” he counters.

I soften my voice. “It’s a carefully planned meeting. I’m not walking into danger…I’m walking into opportunity.”

Another pause. I can almost picture him rubbing his jaw, weighing his concern against his trust in me.

“Just promise me you won’t push too hard tonight,” he says. “Observe. Let them reveal themselves.”

“That was always the plan,” I assure him. “I’m not rushing this.”

“Good,” he says. Then, quieter, “I hate being away when you’re doing things like this.”

I smile again, warmth blooming in my chest. “I’ll be fine. I promise.”

“I love you,” he says.

“I love you too.”

We hang up, and the room feels suddenly quieter but not empty. Never empty.

Now, I take my time getting ready.

Not because I’m nervous but because I deserve to enjoy this.

The dress slides over my body like it was made with me in mind, clinging where it should, skimming where it needs to. I adjust the strap on my shoulder, then lift my eyes to the mirror.

There I am.

Composed. Beautiful. Dangerous.

A wide smile spreads across my face as I study myself, tilting my head slightly, evaluating every detail the way I’ve trained myself to do. My makeup is flawless…soft enough to look effortless, sharp enough to be unforgettable. My hair frames my face just right, not a strand out of place.

I look like a woman who knows exactly where she’s headed.

With a final swipe of gloss, I lean closer to my reflection and murmur, “You’re good to go.”

My phone rings almost immediately, as if on cue.

Mrs. Wayne.

I answer smoothly. “Good evening.”

“Renee, my dear,” she says, her voice bright and excited. “Are you ready? I’m already on my way…with my gift.”

I suppress a smile. Your gift.

“Yes,” I reply lightly. “I’m almost out of the house myself.”

“Oh wonderful. We’ll meet there then.”

“Perfect,” I say. “See you shortly.”

The call ends, and I don’t waste a second. I dial Lydia.

“Keep an eye on the venue,” I tell her. “The moment Mrs. Wayne arrives..with her son…I want to know.”

“Already on standby,” Lydia replies. “I’ll update you immediately.”

“And Lydia,” I add, my tone sharpening just a little, “stay alert. If Sarah followed them, I want to know.”

“Understood.”

I hang up and grab my clutch, my pulse steady, controlled.

Downstairs, the scent of dinner fills the house. Mrs. Morris is already in the kitchen, moving with her usual efficiency, sleeves rolled up, focused on the stove.

“I might be coming home quite late tonight,” I tell her. “Please lock up the entire house once I leave.”

She turns, nodding respectfully. “Of course, ma’am. Should I prepare anything else?”

“No,” I say with a smile. “That will be all.”

She watches me go, and I feel light…untethered…as I step out of the house.

The drive takes nearly an hour, traffic slower than usual, every red light testing my patience. I sit back in the car, replaying the plan in my head, checking each step like a mental checklist.

Halfway to the restaurant, my phone vibrates.

Lydia.

“They’ve arrived,” she says. “Mrs. Wayne is here. And yes…her son, Clark, is with her.”

My lips curve into a satisfied smile.

“Thank you,” I say. “Keep watching. Let me know if anything changes.”

I end the call and glance out the window, my reflection faintly visible in the glass. Calm. Confident. Ready.

Everything is unfolding exactly as it should.

I urge the driver to hurry.

When we finally arrive, I step out of the car and smooth my dress, my heels clicking softly against the pavement as I walk inside. The restaurant is warm and elegant, the low hum of conversation wrapping around me as I scan the room.

And then I see her.

Mrs. Wayne sits near the center, posture proud, face glowing with anticipation. Across from her is a man with his back to me…broad shoulders, familiar build.

I lift my hand slightly and wave.

Mrs. Wayne notices immediately. Her face brightens, and she gestures for me to come over, practically vibrating with excitement.

I approach slowly, deliberately, as if I have no idea who she’s dining with.

“Renee!” she exclaims, rising from her seat.

“Mrs. Wayne,” I say warmly, hugging her. “You look wonderful.”

“So do you, dear,” she replies, holding me back to admire me. “Absolutely radiant.”

We share a brief laugh before she turns slightly toward the man still seated and says, proudly, “Renee, this is my son..Clark.”

I turn.

Time seems to pause.

Clark lifts his head.

Our eyes meet.

For a split second, the world goes quiet. The clinking of glasses, the murmur of voices, the music…all of it fades as recognition crashes between us.

It’s him.

The man from the bar.

The man who stared at me like I was a miracle. The man who poured his failures into shot glasses and looked at me like I was his last hope.

Shock flashes across his face…raw, unguarded.

I mirror it perfectly.

“You?” he breathes.

I inhale sharply, letting my eyes widen, letting surprise ripple through me as if this is the last thing I ever expected.

“Clark?” I say, my voice carefully pitched with disbelief.

Mrs. Wayne looks between us, confused. “Do you two… know each other?”

Neither of us answers.

We just stare at one another, frozen in that charged moment…two people pretending this is coincidence, both knowing it’s anything but.

Inside, I smile.

Because this…this exact second…is where the real game begins.
