Chapter 19: Juliet’s Balcony
Chapter 19: Juliet’s Balcony
Renee’s POV
“Shall we, my lady?” Andy’s voice cut softly into my thoughts, and I turned to find him bowing playfully, his arm extended for me to loop mine through.
I laughed and slipped my hand into the crook of his arm. “Lead the way, my lord.”
Together, we stepped into the grand stone building… a place that carried centuries of whispers, love, and tragedy in its walls. The entrance was alive with the hum of fellow tourists, their voices bouncing off the marble arches as they moved in and out, snapping pictures, buying keepsakes and listening to their tour guides telling tales of Romeo and Juliet.
Andy didn’t seem to notice the crowd. He walked confidently through the sea of people, guiding me toward a staircase roped off with a sign that read “Reserved.” My brows rose as he smiled knowingly and led me right past it.
We climbed slowly, our footsteps echoing against the aged steps until we reached a balcony overlooking a courtyard below…
Romeo’s Courtyard.
The very place Romeo had first laid eyes on Juliet. I could picture the scene but this time with myself as Juliet and Romeo as Andy.
And there, under the gentle kiss of the Italian afternoon light, was a table for two.
The setting was magical… an ivory lace tablecloth rippling in the soft breeze, petals of red and white roses scattered like confetti across its surface. A crystal vase held a single white lily, and the scent of freshly baked bread and fine wine lingered in the air. Two champagne flutes shimmered beside silver plates, and in the distance, I could hear faint Italian music floating up from the streets below.
“Andy…” I breathed, my voice soft and stunned.
He simply smiled, pulling out a chair for me like the gentleman he was. “After you.”
I sat, still staring around me in disbelief. The world seemed to quiet down… it seemed to be just us, the wind, and the echo of love stories that had been told here for centuries. Andy took his seat across from me, eyes full of warmth.
“You didn’t have to do all this,” I said, shaking my head. “Really, Andy. This is too much.”
He leaned forward slightly, that soft smile deepening. “Nothing is too much for the woman I’ve loved my entire life. You deserve every bit of this and more. I wanted you to feel how special you are to me… how special our love is.”
My throat tightened at his words. “I don’t even know what to say”
“Say nothing and enjoy this beautiful view,” he said, voice low and proud. “Just for three hours. Just us.”
Butterflies exploded in my stomach. My heart felt too big for my chest as I looked around at the empty balcony… ours alone. I couldn’t speak for a moment. No man had ever done something this thoughtful for me. No one had ever gone this far to make me feel like I mattered.
I blinked hard to hold back the tears threatening to spill. “Andy… this is beyond beautiful.”
He reached across the table, brushing his thumb across my hand. “Not as beautiful as you but I agree because beautiful people deserve beautiful things.”
We laughed softly, breaking the emotional silence, and soon our food arrived… delicate plates of ravioli filled with creamy ricotta, slices of crusty Italian bread, roasted vegetables drizzled with olive oil, and glasses of chilled white wine. The flavors melted on my tongue as the city sounds drifted faintly from below.
I pointed toward the courtyard, where people gathered, taking photos near a marble statue of Juliet. “You know, that’s Romeo’s courtyard,” I said. “The book says this is where they met for the first time. Can you imagine? We’re seated in the exact spot where a love story was born… could this be a sign!?.”
Andy followed my gaze, smiling. “Yes, it's a sign that we should not hesitate and finalize our union.”
We shared a look… quiet, intimate and for a moment, it felt like time had stopped.
I want to marry Andrew but how can I let him be with a broken woman for life?
He broke the silence by motioning to a small archway below. “After lunch nice got something else I want to show you after lunch,” he said. “I heard this place had a Love Garden. Couples leave their confessions there… their promises and letters, everything they want to come true.”
I grinned. “You want us to write one?”
“Exactly.”
As if on cue, a waiter appeared with a polite smile, holding a silver tray. On it were two small pieces of parchment paper and a pen. He handed them to Andy, who passed one across the table to me.
I held the pen, staring at the paper for a while before the words began to pour out of me…raw, honest, and real:
I never imagined a day I’d love someone more than I’d ever loved Clark. Andy has been there in the shadows, fighting for me, making sure I was okay while bearing the pain of seeing me love another man. When he finally had the chance, he rescued me and gave me a second chance at life. Some may think I love him out of debt, but to me, he’s the only man I see myself growing old with. He’s my savior, my crown, and my pride. I’ll love and honor you for the rest of my life.
When I finished, my hands trembled. I folded the paper carefully, placing it on the table before handing the pen to Andy.
He smiled, eyes twinkling as he took it and began to write his. I didn’t peek. I wanted it to be a surprise… a little secret between him and his heart.
Minutes later, we left the balcony and made our way down to the courtyard, where countless notes fluttered from walls and trees … confessions of love written by strangers from every corner of the world. Andy slid our letters into an empty space between two tiles, pressing them gently in place.
“There,” he murmured. “Now it’s forever.”
The rest of the day unfolded in a dream. We visited Juliet’s statue, traced the worn edges of Romeo’s tomb, and walked through every historic corner of the Montague estate hand in hand. Each step felt like we were walking through a story… not Shakespeare’s this time, but ours.
By the time we left, the sun had begun its descent. Shadows stretched long across the cobblestone paths as we climbed back into the little beetle car and began the drive back to Venice.
It was almost 6 p.m. when we finally arrived. I barely had the strength to kick off my shoes before collapsing onto the soft couch in the villa’s living room. Andy dropped beside me, chuckling as he ran a hand through his hair.
“Thank you,” I whispered, resting my head on his shoulder.
He turned to look at me. “Don’t thank me yet,” he said with that familiar grin. “We still have a week, remember? I’ve got plenty more surprises up my sleeve.”
I smiled tiredly, staring at the ceiling, my body heavy with fatigue but my heart impossibly light.
“How did I ever get this lucky?” I murmured under my breath, half to myself. “A broken girl like me… with a man like you.”
He looked down, but before he could answer, my eyes were already fluttering closed.
“I love you, Andy,” I mumbled softly, barely awake.
And before he could whisper it back, I was already fast asleep…dreaming of love letters, red roses, and a balcony that once belonged to Juliet.
