Chapter 30 A Deal is a Deal

Chapter 30 A Deal is a Deal
Scarlet's POV

Amaya flushed, a faint red staining her pale cheeks. "He's… intense. He just eats shadows. Literally. Thinks I've got some kind of inner beast that needs to be unleashed. He's all about instinct and chaos and… survival."

I grinned, a genuine, wolfish flash of teeth. "Sounds like my kind of guy. And he's not wrong either. You do have a beast, Amaya. I felt it when you healed me. A raw power. A controlled fury. It's magnificent."

"Magnificent and terrifying," she corrected, her voice tight. "I don't want to be a wolf. I don't want to be anything that tears. I told him that."

"Sometimes tearing is the only way to heal," I said, a knowing look passing between us. "And sometimes, to protect, you have to be the most dangerous thing in the room. He told you that, too, didn't he?" Her silence was her answer. "So, the Archangel wants to mold you into a pure, shining Saint, full of truth and light. And the sexy demon wants to unleash your inner beast, make you a primal force of chaos and instinct." I leaned back, stretching my stiff limbs. "Classic. Sounds like they both want a piece of you, Amaya. More than just an ally, I'd wager."

Amaya's eyes widened, her mouth parting slightly. "What do you mean?"

I laughed, a rich, genuine sound that surprised even myself. "Oh, come on, sister. You're not that naive. You radiate power, beauty, and a vulnerability that draws them in. Malik, the golden boy, sees you as his sacred charge, the one to purify and guide. Ryker, the dark horse, sees a kindred spirit, a wild thing to break free and claim. They're circling you like wolves. One wants to put a halo on you, the other wants to put a leash on you. Metaphorically speaking, of course."

Her cheeks flushed a deeper crimson. "That's… that's not what this is."

"Isn't it?" I countered gently, a mischievous glint in my eyes. "They're both vying for your attention, for your loyalty. And for your… heart, if I'm reading the currents right. An angel and a demon, fighting over a human with power that could unravel the realms. It's almost poetic."

She buried her face in her hands. "I just want to understand what's happening to me. I don't want to be a prize to be won. Besides, I wouldn't know the first thing to do with a human man, let alone a supernatural one."

"Then don't be," I said, pulling her hands away from her face, making her meet my gaze. My amber eyes held a fierce loyalty, a protective fire. "You're not a prize, Amaya. You're a force. And you need to learn to wield it. And if these two pretty boys want to help, let them. Use them. Learn from them. But don't let them define you. Or cage you. You don't need to choose. There is no fated bond that will force you to choose either."

"But I don't know anything about this world," she whispered, her voice tinged with despair. "I don't know who to trust. Who's telling me the truth? Is there even a truth?"

"The truth is rarely simple, and never singular," I stated, drawing on centuries of instinct, on the raw wisdom of the wild. "And trust is earned, not given. Especially when you're caught between an angel and a demon who both have ulterior motives, however noble they might claim them to be."

I looked at her, truly looked at her, this small, broken human with the power to mend broken bones and soothe tormented souls. She was an anchor in this new, chaotic reality. And I, the outcast, the wolfless, had found my new pack. My sister.

"Here's the deal," I said, a sudden resolve hardening my tone. "You saved me. You put me back on my feet. Now, I owe you. And wolves always pay their debts. We're a pack, you and I. A pack of two, for now." I extended my hand, my human palm scarred, but strong. "A friendship pact. What do you say?"

She looked at my outstretched hand, then into my eyes, searching for something. She found it – loyalty, fierce and unwavering. A mirroring of the protective instinct that bloomed within her. A slow, tentative smile spread across her face.

"A friendship pact," she repeated, her voice gaining strength, a spark of the fire Ryker had sensed. She grasped my hand firmly. "I like the sound of that. And you know what? If they're circling me like wolves, maybe I need a wolf on my side."

I giggled. "Exactly," I affirmed, squeezing her hand. "And I'll be a bloody good wolf. I'll watch them both. Every move they make. Every lingering glance. Every honeyed word." My eyes narrowed, a predatory glint in their depths. "I'll sniff out their true intentions towards you. The angel who wants to purify you into a weapon for his dying god. The demon who wants to unleash you for his own chaotic ends. I'll know what they truly want, Amaya. What they really want, beyond all their pretty speeches and veiled threats."

"And then what?" she asked, a genuine curiosity in her eyes now, a flicker of excitement.

"Then," I said, a mischievous grin stretching my lips, "we decide if they're worthy of a place in our pack. Or if we send them packing." My gaze lingered on her face, seeing past the fear, past the confusion, to the fierce, untamed spirit stirring beneath. "You're a storm, Amaya. And I'm ready to watch you rage."

A comfortable silence fell between us, filled with the unspoken understanding of a newly forged bond. The hum of the city, the muted sounds of the motel, faded into the background. Here, in this small, ordinary room, a powerful alliance had been formed. The wolfless and the pharmacist. The outcast and the reluctant saint. Together, we would face the angels and demons. Together, we would unravel the secrets of this new, terrifying world. And together, we would figure out just what the hell an Archangel and a demon really wanted with Amaya Janice. My gut told me it was going to be anything but simple. But then, nothing in her new life would be. And that, I realized, was exactly why I was here. She needed a sister. And I had found one.
