Chapter Sixty-Six--Can I Finally Have Peace?
“Eat it,” I needled.
Kalvyn crossed his arms and groaned. “Don’t want to.”
“Don’t be such a baby.”
“Am not.” He pouted. His hard cock tented the white sheets on our bed. Go figure. The male gets shot for me, and still needs some nooky only two days after. “Come here.”
“Alive or not, you’re wounded, buddy boy. You need to eat. No sex.”
“What? Where in the Alpha rules does it say that?”
“The ones I wrote, as Alpha, just this morning.”
“And I’m not wounded anymore, well, much. It’s a little sore. Big deal. I’ve suffered worse.” He grinned, all sexy like. “A cracked rib, and some bruises.” He shoved the sheets down his body, well past his straining erection. “See, no bullet holes.”
“Then why do you wince every time you move?”
“Well, that’s easy. Cracked rib, which I believe I’ve already admitted to, beautiful. Now be a good nurse, and give me my medicine. I promise, I will be good boy for the rest of the hour.” He snagged my hair and pulled me in for a drugging kiss that made me forget myself.
“You’re incorrigible.”
“That I am. But you love it. In fact, have it no other way.”
The door burst open, and I covered Kalvyn’s lap. Carmen dragged a limping Quinn behind her.
My happiness dimmed. Kalvyn, who had suffered worse, had healed twice as fast. Kalvyn, a Royal was extended privileges, I wished to God the whole clan experienced.
They stumbled to the bed, and collapsed.
Syber and Lola stayed at the door, smiling far too much for my liking. I didn’t ask. Didn’t want to know. Yet.
“Hello Alphas,” Quinn murmured, the sparkle in his voice temporarily on vacation as his throat wound healed over. “We have come baring gifts of our presence.”
“Lucky us,” Kalvyn said dryly. He set the food on the bedside table, and pulled me into his lap. He’s gotten out of eating, again. Damn it.
“Ahh, don’t sound so put out,” Carmen purred. “Like you don’t get enough alone time as it is.”
“But she doesn’t let me do anything fun when I’m out of commission. As if I’m the child,” he grumbled. “I haven’t been a child in two hundred years.”
“Oh yeah,” Syber said. “Must be such a hardship to being taken care of by a little spitfire. Who by the way, amuses the hell out of all of us, as she bosses you around like an Omega. I haven’t had this much amusement in years.”
Kalvyn nipped my ear. “See what you did.”
I smiled against his chest. “Poor baby. Suck it up.”
“Oh, I’ll suck it up, all right…”
“Kalvyn,” I warned. “Want to get shot again?”
“Hell no. Once was enough, thanks.”
“Then behave.”
My cat stirred in my mind.
It amuses me too, how you order him around.
It would.
Sadness pierced my heart, as it often did. Between my cat and Kalvyn, they didn’t touch on the event, as they called it. My cat muddled my thoughts after I changed the first time. Even though I had done it, the event was detached from me. A nightmare from someone else’s dream.
No one talked about it.
No one acted as if anything was amiss. Not even Lola.
All of my family was dead, but I hadn’t shed a tear.
You have a family, Katrina. One who will come to mean more than you could possibly know.
Kalvyn touched my back, as if he sensed the less than perfect clan meeting was anything but. I cuddled closer to him. He rubbed his chin on the top of my head, holding me tighter.
I smiled through my sadness. This was home. This was my life. One I was still adjusting to and would one day master.
THE END—Or Is It?
