One Hundred and Twenty Nine

One Hundred and Twenty Nine
Amara drew in a shaky breath, her chest rising and falling rapidly. She stood, her hands still trembling, but her eyes were fierce, burning with anger and defiance.
“I'm leaving,” she said, voice steadying despite the tears. “I’m not staying here. Not under your roof, not under your control, and definitely not under your lies.”
Don Matteo’s eyes narrowed, a dangerous glint flashing in them. “Youve been out of the house for a few months now make you feel like you've grown some wing huh. How dare you talk to me with that tone you trash?”
“I’m not afraid of you,” Amara said, stepping closer. “Oh I am so thankful, that you're not my father. All my life … you tried to make me feel worthless. I’m done being afraid. I’m done. You don't scare me. And I'm going to make you pay for what you did to mom.”
Valen rose from his chair, standing protectively beside her. “She’s right,” he said, his voice shaking with rage. “I won’t let you hurt her. I won’t let you get away with what you’ve done.”
Don Matteo’s face twisted with fury. “Valen, son you want to side with this.. Thing. I'm still your father you of all people don't get to treat me this way.”
Darius stepped forward, his presence solid, unyielding. He placed a protective arm around Amara, his dark eyes locked on Matteo. “She’s not a trash,” he said, voice low and dangerous. “Don't you dare call her that. And if you try to touch her, you’ll regret it.”
Amara felt a strange mix of fear and relief as she leaned slightly into Darius. His hand was warm, steadying her trembling body. For the first time in years, she felt like she wasn’t alone against the storm that was her father.
Don Matteo’s fists clenched at his sides, his face pale with rage. “You… you think you can just take her away from me?”
“I don’t think,” Darius growled. “I will. She's never coming back to this never again.
Valen placed a hand on Amara’s shoulder, squeezing gently. “I'm so proud of you for standing up. I won't let him hurt you.”
Amara’s eyes softened as she looked at her brother and Darius. She felt the weight of years of fear and manipulation begin to lift, replaced with a new strength. “I’m done with him,” she whispered, more to herself than anyone else.
Don Matteo’s face darkened, lips curling with hatred. But even his fury couldn’t break the unspoken bond between Amara, Darius, and Valen. They were united now, a wall he could no longer penetrate.
Amara drew a shaky breath, letting the tears fall freely, but this time they were different… tears of release, of courage, of finally reclaiming herself.
Darius’s arm tightened around her shoulders, his chest rising and falling steadily beside her. “Let’s go,” he murmured softly. “We’re leaving never coming back..”
Amara gripped Darius’s hand tightly as they walked out of the mansion. Every step felt like shedding a weight she hadn’t realized she’d carried for years. The salty air from the sea outside wrapped around them, cool and freeing, a sharp contrast to the suffocating tension they’d left behind.
Valen stayed a few steps behind, his eyes still flashing with anger, but there was a sense of relief in his stance. “Stay safe,” he muttered to Amara. “Call me if anything happens..”
“Thank you.,” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion.
Darius led the way to the sleek black car waiting outside. He opened the door for her, and she slid in, finally letting herself exhale. The leather seats smelled faintly of his cologne, and that alone brought a strange comfort.
As the car pulled away from the mansion, the looming walls of her father’s house shrank behind them. Amara stared out the window, watching the landscape blur past…the trees, the roads, the endless stretch of coastline. Every mile felt like freedom.
Beside her, Darius’s hand found hers again, thumb brushing over the back of her hand. “It’s over,” he said softly. “At least for now.”
Amara leaned her head against the window, letting the wind lift strands of her hair. “I can’t believe it,” she murmured. “All these years… and I didn’t even remember some of it. I didn’t know… how much he wanted me gone.”
Darius tightened his grip on her hand, his gaze fixed on the road ahead. “It’s not your fault,” he said firmly. “None of this is your fault. You survived, Amara. That’s what matters.”
Tears pricked at her eyes, but this time they weren’t just sorrow…they were release. The fear that had nested in her chest for years finally loosened its grip, even if just a little.
When the car finally turned onto the long driveway leading to the beachside mansion, Amara’s breath caught. The white walls gleamed in the morning sun, the sound of waves crashing against the shore faint but steady. It felt like a sanctuary. Safe. Their own.
Darius opened the door for her again, and she stepped out, letting the sand sink between her toes. The breeze whipped her hair, carrying with it the faint scent of salt and freedom.
“Finally we are back,” Darius said, voice low, almost a whisper. “Try and get some rest.”
Amara let herself lean into him, her body weight supported by his steady frame. “I’m scared it’s not really over,” she admitted softly.
“It will be soon.” he said simply, pulling her closer. “For now just rest.@
She closed her eyes for a moment, letting the warmth of his chest, the steady rhythm of his heartbeat, ground her. For the first time in years, she felt the tiniest spark of peace.
The mansion’s doors opened, welcoming them in, but Amara didn’t rush. She stood a moment longer on the sand, letting the sea breeze wash over her. She had survived her father’s cruelty, and now she was stepping into her own life, on her own terms… with Darius by her side.
Inside, the house was quiet, sun spilling through the wide windows and reflecting off the polished floors. Darius guided her to the main lounge, where a soft couch waited. He let her sit while he moved around, checking the locks and windows, making sure their sanctuary was just that…untouchable.
Amara watched him, admiration and relief swirling together. He always looked out for her, protected her, but this time it was different. This time, it was freedom…freedom from fear, from lies, from the shadow of her father.
When he finally returned, he knelt in front of her, taking her hands into his. “I just checked in on the guards.” he said, eyes holding hers. “To make sure the security is tight.”
She let out a shaky breath, a tear sliding down her cheek, but it was mingled with a sense of hope. “Thank you,” she whispered. “For everything.”
Darius tilted his head, brushing a gentle kiss across her forehead. “Always,” he said.
