Chapter 137 Lost them, like literally

Chapter 137 Lost them, like literally
Nico's POV

Marcus didn’t even blink.

He just turned to me slightly and gave me that crooked half-smile, the one that always showed up right before he did something stupid.

“Solution? Hell no. Nico, I was born for this shit!” He screamed and before I could tell him he was crazy, he slammed the gas harder.

The sedan lurched forward like it was about to take off as the tires screamed against the road till I feared it would pop.

We shot straight at the last standing van, Dante’s van while what looked like reinforcements closed in.

I turned and stared at them again, counting out about 6 different cars and all headed our way.

Three of them peeled off wide to our left while the three on the right, swarmed around us and closed in tightly.

I twisted in the seat, watching them draw closer. “Marcus, they’re gaining! Six of them!”

But he didn’t as much as turn to me or slow down.

“Then stop talking and start shooting, pretty boy!” He yelled as he kept his eyes on the road.

My face burned at the strange nickname, but I didn’t have time to snap back before the first three cars on our left opened fire.

Bullets rained off the trunk, shattering the rear window as glass sprayed across the back seat.

Marcus lowered his head and the car swerved left and right wildly.

I ducked low, then popped up back with my pistol out through the passenger window.

Marcus yanked the wheel suddenly to the right and I nearly tipped off through the window as the sedan shifted sideways for a second.

But he straightened before that could happen and even pulled me back with a strong hand.

“Hold on!” He yelled after nearly killing me.

I rolled my eyes but focused back on the attackers. I took a deep breath and aimed at the driver, firing three quick shots at the closest car to our left.

The driver’s head snapped back and I nearly clapped in excitement.

The car swerved wildly as the driver had been effectively taken out and before they could get it under control, it swerved left suddenly and slammed into the one beside it.

Both vehicles spun off the road in a tangle followed by flames.

“Two down!” I yelled.

Marcus laughed that wild laugh again. “That’s my guy!” He screamed as he kept driving.

I looked ahead and noticed how the van was easily speeding off as we lacked any form of balance.

I reached into my pocket, picked out my handy tool and aimed for the van quickly.

I took a shot and it hit the back of the van without as much as an effect.

“You do know it's bullet proof, right?” Marcus asked from beside me and I only offered a smile.

I stuck it back into my pocket and returned my focus to our impending attackers.

The three cars on the right opened fire next, striking the hood of our car mercilessly.

One bullet tore through the dashboard by my side, inches away from my knee.

I felt the heat on my leg and Marcus cursed, flipping the wheel left and taking us off the main road completely.

We bounced onto the messy part of the road with rocks and dust flying everywhere.

The sedan shook like it was coming apart as branches whipped the windows.

Marcus kept the gas pinned down while weaving between trees like he’d done this a hundred times.

“Give me cover!” He shouted and I leaned half of my body out the window to do just that.

The three remaining cars followed us off the road with their headlights giving them away.

I aimed at the lead one and emptied as many bullets as I could into it.

The front tire blew off and the car flipped once and slammed into a large tree.

But the other two kept coming.

Marcus glanced sideways at me and I caught his eyes. “You still with me?” He asked.

“Pretty much,” I muttered, tossing that gun back and picking up another.

One of the last cars pulled alongside us to our right and the passenger glass came down before a rifle pointed out.

Before he could fire, Marcus slammed our side into him and the car spun sideways, hitting a root, and rolling over.

It exploded behind us as we sped off.

Marcus whooped. “Four down!”

And two to go, this couldn't be that hard.

But the last two cars were smarter, they split into two with one trying to cut us off from the front, and the other staying tight on our back.

They kept the bullets coming as one punched through the back seat and stopped in the headrest right behind me.

I felt the impact vibrate through my spine.

Marcus yanked the wheel again, sending us sliding between two thick trees.

The sedan scraped bark on both sides before sparks popped out everywhere.

The car behind us wasn’t as lucky, it tried to follow but smashed straight into one of the trunks and caught flames immediately.

“One left,” Marcus said with an edged voice now.

The final car was the toughest. It stayed glued to our rear and kept firing through the broken window.

Marcus pushed the sedan harder with dirt flying behind, but the guy wouldn’t shake loose.

I twisted all the way around in the seat. “I got him!” I called out as I saw an opening.

I fired three shots with the first two hitting the windshield and the third catching the driver in the shoulder.

The car swerved and clipped a rock, before flipping over.

It landed hard on its roof and slid to a stop in a cloud of smoke and dust.

That was it, silence finally followed.

Marcus finally eased off the gas just a bit as the sedan bounced back onto a narrow dirt track, still shaking.

We were both breathing hard and my hands wouldn’t stop trembling on the gun.

Marcus looked over at me with that same crooked grin back on his face. “See? No plan needed,” he teased with a shrug.

I wanted to argue. I wanted to tell him he was reckless and stupid and that I hated how much I loved watching him drive like a madman.

But all I could say was, “we’re clear now.”

He nodded once, then floored it again and his voice dropped low. “Now we catch the real one.”

I gripped the dashboard tight as the sedan roared forward, chasing the only obstacle left on the road.

We were coming for Dante. And nothing was going to stop us this time

Or so we thought, till he navigated the car back onto the road and stopped suddenly.
