THE SACRIFICE
THE SACRIFICE
~James's POV
\---
Day 3.
I haven't slept well since Anna left. The mansion echoes with her absence, her coffee mug still on the counter, her book open on the couch, her perfume lingering in the hallway like a ghost.
Marcus, my private investigator, sits across from me in the study at eight AM. Evidence spreads across the dining table like a map of Elena's deception.
"Elena Santos has been seeing someone," he says, sliding photographs forward. "Dr. Joel Mendez. Fertility specialist. They've been together for eight months."
I stare at the images. Elena entering Mendez's brownstone at midnight. Their dinner at a restaurant in Brooklyn where she thought no one would recognize her. His hand on her lower back, possessive and familiar. The kiss in his car, deep and intimate.
"The pregnancy?" I ask, though I already know.
"His. Not yours." Marcus pulls out medical records, timeline analysis. "Your encounter with Elena was six months ago. She's twelve weeks pregnant now. The math doesn't work. She conceived with Mendez three months after you slept with her."
Relief should flood through me. Proof that the baby isn't mine. Proof Elena is lying about everything.
Instead, all I feel is cold calculation of what this evidence costs.
"There's more." Marcus shows me printed emails. "Communication between Elena and her father, Sebastian Santos. The merger is contingent on marriage into the Reynolds family. She needs your name for legitimacy, access to old money circles."
"And Harrison?"
"He's been coordinating with them for months. Dozens of calls between Harrison and Elena. They've been planning this."
Marcus leans forward. "James, you have everything you need to expose her. Use it."
I look at the evidence. Truth that should matter but won't save what matters most.
"If I expose Elena publicly, she retaliates by exposing Anna."
"If you don't, you lose everything."
"Not everything." I close the folder. "Thank you, Marcus. Send me the files encrypted. Then stop the investigation."
"James—"
"It's done."
After he leaves, I sit alone with proof I can't use.
My phone rings at 3 PM. Harrison.
I let it go to voicemail.
It rings again immediately. Then a text: My office. 4 PM. We need to discuss tomorrow's board meeting. Don't make me send security to escort you.
I stare at the thinly veiled threat. Harrison doesn't make empty threats.
At 3:55, I walk into Reynolds Tech for what might be the last time as CEO.

Harrison's Office - 4 PM
His assistant waves me through without a word. The door is already open, Harrison waiting behind his desk like a king granting audience.
"James. Thank you for coming on such short notice." False courtesy that barely masks the threat.
I close the door behind me but don't sit. "What's this about?"
"Tomorrow's board meeting." He doesn't look up from his laptop. "And the vote that will determine your future at this company."
"The Santos merger vote—"
"Your future as CEO." He finally meets my eyes. "The board has concerns, James. About your judgment. About how your personal life is affecting company reputation and shareholder value."
"My relationship with Elena is none of—"
"Not Elena." His smile is cold and sharp. "Anna."
The room goes still.
"Anna has nothing to do with company business."
"Doesn't she?" He turns his laptop toward me.
A drafted press release fills the screen:
"CONCERNS RAISED ABOUT REYNOLDS CEO'S RELATIONSHIP WITH DEPENDENT WARD"
I stare at the headline. Each word carefully crafted to destroy without technically defaming.
"What is this?"
"Your future. If tomorrow's board meeting doesn't go the way it should." Harrison leans back in his leather chair, fingers steepled. "We won't accuse you of anything illegal, of course. Just raise questions. When did the relationship begin? Was Anna truly free to consent given the power dynamic? Why did you remove her name from property deeds while maintaining financial control over her life?"
"This is character assassination."
"This is protecting shareholder value." He closes the laptop with a decisive click. "I have six votes, James. Six board members ready to invoke the morality clause in your contract. Either you announce your engagement to Elena tomorrow and make this all disappear, or we vote to remove you as CEO and release this statement anyway."
"You're blackmailing me."
"I'm offering you a choice." He stands, walks to his floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city. "Marry Elena. Secure the Santos merger. Remain CEO. Let Anna Chen live her life without the world wondering if her stepfather groomed her."
My hands clench into fists. "She's twenty-three years old. An adult. Our relationship—"
"Doesn't matter." Harrison turns back. "What matters is appearance. And it appears very bad, James. You know it does."
He returns to his desk and pulls out a folder. Surveillance photos spill across the mahogany surface.
The birthday kiss in my car. The shopping trip, Anna laughing as she holds up a tie. The Henderson gala, her fingers adjusting my jacket. Tracy's party, my hand on her back as I guided her out.
Each innocent moment, frozen and weaponized.
"These go public tomorrow if you don't cooperate," Harrison says. "Along with witness statements about you showing up at that party to 'claim' her. Credit card records showing expensive gifts—jewelry, clothes, that star necklace she never takes off. The theater production contract that looks suspiciously like you're financially controlling her career."
Each piece of evidence lands like a blow. Not because they're damning—they're not—but because of how they'll be twisted.
"By tomorrow afternoon, Anna won't be able to leave her apartment without paparazzi asking if you groomed her. Every theater director will wonder if she got roles through your influence or actual talent. Every relationship she tries to have will be shadowed by questions about trauma bonding and daddy issues."
He's painting a vivid, devastating picture. And it's all true.
"You're destroying an innocent woman to get what you want."
"No, James." Harrison's voice is quiet. Final. "You are. By refusing to do what's necessary to protect her. By putting your pride ahead of her future."
He slides a single sheet across the desk. Tomorrow's board meeting agenda. Item three: CEO Fitness Review.
"Nine AM, James. The board votes. Accept the Santos terms—all of them, including the marriage clause—or watch everything burn. Your company. Your reputation." He pauses. "And Anna's entire life."
"What if I have proof Elena is lying about the pregnancy?"
Harrison's smile sharpens. "Even if you prove the baby isn't yours, you'll start a public war with Elena. And wars have collateral damage. Anna gets caught in the crossfire either way. You expose Elena's lies, Elena exposes yours."
Mutually assured destruction.
He's thought of everything.
"Tomorrow. Nine AM," Harrison repeats. "Choose wisely."

Parking Garage
I'm halfway to my car when Elena emerges from behind a concrete pillar. Radiant in designer maternity wear, one hand resting on her barely visible bump like she's auditioning for a magazine cover.
"Harrison says you're being stubborn."
"I'm being honest. That child isn't mine."
She laughs, the sound echoing off concrete walls. "You think truth matters? I'm pregnant. You slept with me six months ago. The timeline is plausible. That's all the public needs."
"I have proof you're lying. Photos of you with Mendez."
"My fertility doctor?" Her smile is razor-sharp. "How sinister. You forget, James, I've been preparing this story for months. Every piece of evidence you have, I have a perfectly reasonable counter-narrative."
She steps closer, heels clicking. "But here's what you don't have—protection for Anna. Tomorrow when the board votes, we'll also discuss whether her theater contract represents inappropriate financial entanglement. Whether she should be investigated for accepting gifts that might technically belong to company assets."
My blood runs cold. "You wouldn't."
"I absolutely would. Unless you stop fighting and accept reality." She touches her stomach, the gesture practiced and false. "Marry me. Give this child a name. Save your position. Protect Anna from scandal. Everyone wins."
"Everyone but Anna and me."
"Anna gets to keep her reputation and her theater career intact. You get to remain CEO of the company you built." Elena heads toward her Tesla. "What would Anna want, James? You fighting a war that destroys her? Or you protecting her even if it costs your relationship?"
Her car glides away silently, leaving me alone under harsh fluorescent lights.
