Chapter 21 The Empty Mind
Chapter 21 The Empty Mind
Maya's POV
Dante was gone.
Not physically gone—his body was right there, sitting on Elena's couch in the museum. But when I looked into his eyes, nobody looked back.
"What did you do to him?" I screamed at Elena.
She stood by the window, watching golden projections fill the streets. "I took what was mine. Every memory he had of being a Cupid. Three thousand years of divine knowledge, now stored safely where it belongs."
"You stole his memories?" My voice cracked. "You're supposed to be on our side!"
"I'm on my own side. I always have been." Elena turned to face me, her eyes glowing pure gold. "Did you really think I'd give up centuries of accumulated power just to help some mortal woman and her lovesick ex-Cupid? Please. I've been planning this since the moment Dante told me he was falling for you."
Through the wish-bond, I felt... nothing. The connection was still there, but Dante's side was empty. Like trying to call someone whose phone was disconnected.
"Dante?" I touched his face. His eyes were open but blank. "Can you hear me?"
No response. He breathed, blinked, existed—but nobody was home.
Lily clutched my leg, crying. "Where did Mr. Dante go?"
"His consciousness is still in there," Elena said calmly. "Buried deep. But without his memories, he doesn't know who he is. Doesn't know who you are. Doesn't even know his own name. He's a blank slate."
"Bring him back!" I lunged at her, but golden chains erupted from the floor, wrapping around my wrists. The same chains that had held Dante on the bridge.
Elena waved her hand, and I froze in place. Unable to move. Unable to do anything but watch.
"Here's what's going to happen," Elena said. "In two days, on Valentine's Day, the wish magic peaks. Vanessa will use Lily's power to summon an army of demons. I'll use Dante's stolen memories to challenge the High Council and take control of all Cupids. And you? You'll watch helplessly while everyone you love suffers."
"Why?" Tears streamed down my face. "Why are you doing this?"
"Because I'm tired of serving humanity. Tired of watching humans waste the love we create for them. Your marriage to Marcus? I arranged that binding knowing he was a demon. I wanted to study how long a human could endure systematic abuse before breaking. You were an experiment, Maya. Nothing more."
The words hit like physical blows. "You... you sold me to him on purpose?"
"Of course. And it worked beautifully. Fifteen years of data on demonic feeding patterns, human psychological deterioration, and the limits of binding magic. Very valuable research." Elena smiled. "Vanessa playing your best friend was my idea too. Having a demon close to you, feeding on your pain while pretending to support you? Exquisite."
I wanted to scream. Wanted to rage. But the chains held me silent and still.
"The best part?" Elena continued. "Dante falling for you wasn't an accident. I guided him here. Made sure he moved in next door. Encouraged every interaction. All so I could harvest his power when he became mortal. He thought he was choosing love. Really, he was choosing to become my battery."
She walked to Dante and patted his empty face. "Three thousand years of Cupid knowledge. Imagine what I can do with that."
"You won't get away with this," I managed to choke out.
"I already have. The Council won't arrive until after Valentine's Day. By then, it'll be too late. The demons will control Rosewood Falls, I'll control the Cupids, and you'll be bound to Vanessa as her personal feeding source. Just like you were with Marcus, except forever this time."
"Mommy?" Lily's small voice cut through everything. "I can fix Mr. Dante."
Elena laughed. "You're six years old. You can't—"
Lily placed both hands on Dante's chest. Her eyes started glowing—not red like demons, not gold like Cupids, but pure white like the Council leaders.
"I wished for Mommy to find someone who loves us," Lily said, her voice echoing strangely. "That wish is still active. Still powerful. And wishes have to come true."
White light exploded from her hands.
Elena shrieked, thrown backward by the force. The golden chains around me shattered. Dante gasped, his eyes suddenly focusing.
"Maya?" His voice was hoarse, confused. "What happened? Where are we?"
"You remember me?" I grabbed his face, searching his eyes. "You remember?"
"I remember... everything. Being a Cupid. Falling for you. Elena taking my memories." He looked at Lily in shock. "How did you do that?"
"Wish magic," Lily said simply. Then she collapsed.
I caught her before she hit the floor. She was breathing but unconscious, her small body burning with fever.
"She used too much power," Elena said, picking herself up. Her perfect composure was cracked now, fear showing through. "Mortal children aren't meant to channel that much magic. It's killing her."
"No!" I held Lily close, feeling her heartbeat flutter weakly. "Help her! Please!"
"I can't. Only the Council can heal magic burnout like this." Elena's expression was conflicted now—something almost like regret. "Maya, I... I didn't mean for the child to get hurt."
"You meant for all of it!" Dante was on his feet now, fury blazing in his eyes. "You sold Maya to a demon. You stole my memories. You're helping Vanessa destroy this town. Don't pretend you suddenly care about a six-year-old!"
"I care about—" Elena stopped, shook her head. "It doesn't matter. The damage is done. Lily will die unless the Council heals her. But they won't come until after Valentine's Day."
"Then we make them come now," I said fiercely. "We call them. Demand they help."
"They don't answer demands from mortals."
"They'll answer mine." Dante pulled out the napkin Elena had given him days ago—the one with the revealing spell written on it. "This symbol is a direct line to the Council. You gave it to me yourself."
Elena's face went white. "Don't—"
Dante burned the paper.
Golden light shot skyward like a flare, punching through the museum ceiling, through the sky itself. A beacon visible for miles.
"You idiot!" Elena screamed. "You just told the Council everything! They'll come immediately, see what I've done, punish me—"
"Good," Dante said coldly.
The air split open. Three Council members stepped through—the same ones from before. Their white eyes blazed with anger.
"Elena," the female leader said. "You dare betray your sacred duty?"
"I can explain—"
"Silence." The Council leader looked at Lily, dying in my arms. "The child used wish magic beyond her capacity. This is your fault, Elena. Your manipulation, your schemes, your greed. You will answer for it."
"Please," I begged. "Punish her later. Save my daughter first."
The Council leader touched Lily's forehead. White light flowed into her, and color returned to her face. Her breathing steadied. Her eyes fluttered open.
"Mommy?"
"I'm here, baby. I'm right here." I sobbed with relief, holding her tight.
The Council turned to Elena. "Your crimes are extensive. Selling humans to demons. Stealing a Cupid's memories. Conspiring to overthrow divine order. The sentence is—"
"Wait," a new voice said.
Vanessa walked through the museum door, the demon projection massive and solid behind her. But she wasn't alone.
Behind her stood eleven more demons—the ones we thought we'd destroyed. They were regenerated, stronger, ready.
"The sentence can wait," Vanessa said, smiling. "Because in exactly forty-eight hours, none of your rules will matter anymore. Valentine's Day is coming. The wish magic is peaking. And ready or not, this town becomes ours."
She snapped her fingers.
Every golden projection in Rosewood Falls suddenly turned red.
All those people's wishes—for love, for happiness, for romance—corrupted in an instant. Twisted into darkness.
Through the museum windows, I watched as projections transformed. The kind matches became controlling. The loving partners became possessive. The dream relationships became nightmares.
And every single person in town was about to have their corrupted wish come true.
"Forty-eight hours," Vanessa repeated. "Better make them count."
She vanished with her demon army, leaving us staring at a town full of dark wishes about to become reality.
The Council leader looked at us grimly. "This is worse than we thought. The corruption is complete. If we don't stop it by Valentine's Day midnight, Rosewood Falls will be the first of many towns to fall. Demons will spread across the country, using twisted love to enslave humanity."
"How do we stop it?" Dante asked.
The Council leader's expression was terrible. "There's only one way. Someone has to absorb all the corrupted wish magic before midnight on Valentine's Day. Take it into themselves and contain it."
"What happens to that person?" I asked, though I already knew.
"They die," the Council leader said simply. "The amount of dark magic would destroy any mortal instantly. Even a Cupid would barely survive an hour."
She looked at Dante meaningfully.
And I realized with horror what she was suggesting.
Dante had to choose: let the town fall to demons, or sacrifice himself to save it.
