Chapter 397
Chapter 397
KAI'S POV
Once the ceremony activities finally quieted down for the afternoon, I found Theo waiting near my room, the sealed package still hidden beneath his jacket exactly where we had kept it since retrieving it from the storage building.
"Everyone thinks we are resting before the evening events," he said quietly, slipping inside once I confirmed the hallway was empty. "We have maybe an hour before someone notices we are missing."
I locked my bedroom door and pulled the heavy curtains shut, blocking any possible view from outside windows before we settled onto the floor together, the mysterious package resting between us like something that might explode if handled carelessly.
"Ready?" Theo asked.
"No. But let us do it anyway."
I carefully unwrapped the protective cloth surrounding the documents, my hands trembling slightly as decades old paper finally became visible beneath the fabric. Instead of the financial records or official reports I had half expected, we found something entirely different.
Handwritten journals, their pages yellowed with age. Several coded letters, symbols and numbers replacing normal words throughout entire paragraphs. Old photographs, some faded almost beyond recognition, showing groups of formally dressed people gathered at events that looked like territorial meetings from decades earlier.
"Someone deliberately hid these instead of destroying them," Theo murmured, carefully lifting one of the photographs to examine it closer. "If they wanted this evidence completely erased, burning everything would have been simpler."
"Maybe they needed it for something. Insurance, perhaps. Or leverage against someone else."
We spent the next hour carefully examining everything, separating documents into categories based on what little we could understand. Most of the coded letters remained completely indecipherable without proper knowledge of whatever cipher system had been used to write them. I photographed each page carefully anyway, hoping someone with more experience in decryption might eventually help us translate their contents.
One particular notebook caught my attention more than anything else, its leather cover worn smooth from years of handling, pages filled with careful, deliberate handwriting that seemed to document specific meetings and conversations between territorial leaders.
"Listen to this," I said, reading a passage aloud to Theo. "The council meeting concluded with unanimous agreement to proceed with the investigation. However, I have grave concerns about certain members whose continued involvement seems designed more to obstruct progress than genuinely pursue justice."
"Obstruct progress how?"
I continued reading, flipping carefully through several more pages. "Whoever wrote this was documenting something suspicious happening within official investigations, going back years. Look at this entry. Once again, crucial evidence has mysteriously disappeared before reaching proper review. This cannot be coincidence anymore."
Theo leaned closer, studying the handwriting carefully. "This person was investigating corruption within the alliance itself. Documenting it secretly, probably terrified of what would happen if the wrong people discovered what they knew."
"That matches everything the anonymous informant told me. Someone inside the alliance has been protecting these criminals for years, manipulating investigations to keep everything hidden."
I continued reading through the notebook, finding repeated references to specific dates, meetings between influential leaders, careful documentation of decisions that seemed designed to redirect blame or bury uncomfortable truths. But frustratingly, several crucial pages had clearly been torn out at some point, leaving obvious gaps in whatever story this hidden journal had originally documented.
"They removed exactly the pages that probably named names," Theo said, frustration evident in his voice. "Whoever wrote this either destroyed the most incriminating evidence themselves, or someone else found it and removed those specific pages later."
"Either way, we still have enough to confirm this conspiracy is real. It has existed for years, long before anything happened to Lina or our family specifically."
The weight of that realization settled heavily between us. This was not simply about Lina's kidnapping, or Kai's investigation, or even Cole's parents' deaths years ago. This was something far larger, something that had been quietly operating within the alliance structure itself for decades, protected and hidden by people powerful enough to manipulate official investigations whenever necessary.
"Whoever is behind this has been waiting," I said quietly, the implications settling uncomfortably in my chest. "Waiting for the right opportunity, the right circumstances to finally use everything they have built for their own benefit."
"And Lina became that opportunity somehow."
We continued sorting through the remaining documents carefully, cataloging everything as thoroughly as possible before we would need to hide the package again and return to the ceremony before anyone noticed our extended absence.
As I was carefully rewrapping the notebook, something small and folded slipped loose from between two pages, fluttering down onto the floor between us. I picked it up curiously, unfolding the small paper to reveal handwriting completely different from everything else we had examined.
Unlike the detailed journal entries or complex coded letters, this contained only a single sentence, along with a strange symbol I did not immediately recognize, something resembling interlocking circles that meant nothing to me at first glance.
I read the sentence aloud, my voice growing quieter with each word.
"Do not trust the first person who offers you the complete truth."
Theo went completely still beside me. "What does that mean?"
I stared at the paper, my mind racing through every interaction I had experienced throughout this entire investigation. The anonymous informant who met me at the bridge, offering fragments of information about corruption within the alliance. Had that entire meeting been genuine, or was it somehow connected to whoever originally hid these documents, another layer of manipulation designed to lead me somewhere specific?
"The informant," I whispered, ice settling through my veins. "What if he was not actually helping us? What if that entire meeting was designed to point us toward something, or away from something else entirely?"
"You think he lied to you?"
"I do not know anymore." I stared at the strange symbol accompanying the warning, trying desperately to place where I might have seen it before. "But this warning suggests someone anticipated exactly this situation. Someone knew these documents would eventually be found, and they wanted whoever discovered them to remain suspicious of everyone claiming to offer answers."
Theo's expression grew increasingly troubled. "That means we cannot trust anyone completely. Not the informant. Not even people helping us investigate."
"Not even Cole," I said quietly, the implication settling uncomfortably between us.
"Kai, we do not actually know that Cole is involved in whatever this conspiracy is."
"I know. But this warning does not specify who to distrust specifically. It just says not to trust the first person offering complete truth. And Cole has been offering plenty of information throughout this entire investigation."
Theo remained silent for a long moment, clearly processing the unsettling implications of what we had just discovered. Finally he spoke, his voice careful and measured.
"We continue investigating everyone carefully then. Including Cole, including the anonymous informant, including anyone else who offers us information moving forward. We verify everything independently before accepting anything as complete truth."
I nodded slowly, carefully folding the small paper and tucking it safely inside my jacket pocket alongside my phone. We began repackaging the remaining documents, preparing to hide everything securely before returning to the ceremony's ongoing festivities.
As we finished wrapping the protective cloth back around the journals and photographs, I could not shake the uneasy feeling settling deep in my chest. This warning changed everything about how carefully we would need to proceed moving forward, questioning every piece of information, every alliance we had formed during this exhausting investigation.
We slipped out of my room separately, careful to avoid drawing attention as we rejoined the ceremony's evening preparations. But as we walked through the crowded courtyard, my mind kept circling back to that strange symbol, that unsettling warning hidden between pages meant to remain secret for decades.
Someone had anticipated exactly this moment, had prepared this warning specifically for whoever eventually discovered these hidden documents.
Which meant whoever originally hid this evidence knew something about how this entire conspiracy would eventually unfold, knew that someone from our family would eventually find these documents and need protection from believing false narratives designed to mislead us.
The question now was who exactly that warning was protecting us against, and as I glanced across the crowded courtyard toward where Cole stood beside Lina near the refreshment tables, an uncomfortable seed of doubt began taking root that I was not entirely certain I wanted to examine too closely.
