Family Sins

Family Sins
Aria's POV

The slap across my face came without warning.
"You foolish girl!" Elena Romano's voice was sharp with anger. "Do you have any idea what you've done?"
I touched my burning cheek, shocked. Marco's mother had seemed so nice when I first met her. Now she looked like a different person entirely.
"Mom, stop," Marco said, stepping between us. "She doesn't know-"
"Exactly! She doesn't know anything!" Elena's dark eyes blazed. "And because of her stupidity, Hiroshi Nakamura is dead. A man I respected for thirty years."
The words hit me like a physical blow. Kai's grandpa was really gone.
"It's not her fault," Kai said quietly from the corner of the safe house living room. "I chose to bring her to the compound."
"You all chose!" Elena snapped. "You chose to fall in love with a girl whose very existence threatens everything our families built."
"Enough," came a new voice from the doorway.
My father walked in, still wearing his CIA badge, followed by three armed agents. But instead of threatening us, he ignored them with a wave.
"Leave us," he told the agents. "This is family business now."
"Dad," I whispered, still trying to understand that he was alive. "I don't understand any of this."
"I know, baby girl. And I'm sorry for that." He looked older than I remembered, worn down by lies. "Elena, tell her. She has a right to know."
Elena's anger seemed to deflate. She sank into a chair, suddenly looking every one of her fifty-five years.
"Your mother and I were best friends," she said softly. "From childhood until the day she died."
"You knew my mother?"
"Maria Torrino was like a sister to me. We grew up together, played together, shared every secret." Elena's voice grew soft with memory. "Until the alliance was formed."
Luca leaned forward in his chair. "What alliance?"
"The original one. Twenty-five years ago, before any of you were born." Elena looked at each of the four guys. "Five families were supposed to unite - Romano, Petrov, Nakamura, Torrino, and Cross."
My head spun. "Cross? My family was part of this?"
"Your grandfather, Antonio Cross, was one of the most powerful crime bosses on the East Coast," my father said. "The alliance was his idea."
"But you're a professor. You work for the CIA."
Dad's smile was sad. "I've been underground for twenty-three years, sweetheart. Since right after your mother died."
Elena continued the story. "The union was meant to bring peace. Each family would run different territories and businesses. No more wars, no more innocent blood."
"What went wrong?" Marco asked.
"Vincent Torrino," Elena said, her voice going cold. "He was meant to marry my sister Isabella to seal the Romano-Torrino bond. But Isabella fell in love with someone else."
"Who?" I asked, though I was starting to guess.
"Your father," Elena said simply. "James Cross. They met at a peace conference and fell in love instantly." The room went quiet. I stared at my father, seeing him with new eyes.
"You were part of the mafia too?"
"I was supposed to inherit my father's territory," Dad confirmed. "But I fell in love with a woman from a rival family. It complicated everything."
"Vincent went crazy with jealousy," Elena continued. "He'd been in love with Maria since they were children. When she picked James instead of his arranged marriage to Isabella, he snapped."
"So he killed her?" Dmitri asked.
"Worse. He destroyed the entire group." Elena's hands curled into fists. "He killed Antonio Cross at the wedding ceremony, making it look like the Romanos did it. Then he killed Isabella and blamed the Cross family."
I felt sick. "My grandfather was murdered at my parents' wedding?"
"The bloodiest day in mafia history," Elena said sadly. "Twenty-seven people died, including the bride's sister and the groom's father. The partnership shattered. Everyone chose sides."
"And my mother?" "Ran. James took her into hiding, gave up his inheritance, and vanished. Vincent spent years hunting them." Elena looked at my father. "Tell her the rest."
Dad ran his hands through his hair. "The CIA approached me after your grandfather's death. They offered security for your mother in exchange for information on the families. I became their inside man."
"You were a spy this whole time?"
"I was a father trying to keep his family safe," he said strongly. "Everything I did was to protect you and your mother."
"But she died anyway," I whispered.
"Vincent found us when you were five," Dad continued. "He killed Maria and made it look like a car accident. I had to fake my own death to keep you safe."
Tears ran down my face. My entire life had been built on lies and blood.
"This is why Vincent wants me," I realized. "It's not just about power. It's about payback."
"He sees you as Maria's legacy," Elena revealed. "In his twisted mind, possessing you completes his victory over your father."
Marco pulled me against his chest, and I clung to his strength. "What about my mother arriving at Dmitri's warehouse? How is she alive?"
Elena and my father traded a look.
"That wasn't your mother," Dad said slowly.
"What do you mean?"
" Maria had a twin sister. Sophia. She was meant to be the one who married Vincent originally, but she disappeared right before the wedding."
The room spun around me. "A twin?"
"Identical. Even I couldn't tell them apart sometimes." Dad's voice was heavy with old pain. "Sophia was always the darker twin. More like Vincent. More willing to do whatever it took to get power."
"She's been working with Vincent this whole time," Elena added. "Pretending to be dead while helping him hunt you."
I felt like my world was falling again. Everything I thought I knew about my family was wrong.
"There's more," my father said quietly.
"More?" I couldn't handle much more. " The union that brought Marco, Luca, Dmitri, and Kai together to find you? It wasn't random. Elena and I planned it."
I looked at him, then at Elena. "You what?"
"We've been watching all of you for years," Elena said. "Waiting for the right time to reform the alliance. Your father and I knew that eventually, Vincent would make his move for you."
"So you used me as bait?"
"We gave you the strongest protectors we could find," Dad said. "Four men who would die before letting Vincent hurt you."
"And we hoped," Elena added softly, "that you might fall in love with them. All of them. Because that's the only way the partnership can be permanent."
The deception cut deeper than any knife. "You manipulated my feelings?"
"We gave you choices," Elena said. "Real ones. The love you feel is yours."
Before I could reply, all the lights went out.
In the darkness, Vincent's voice echoed through secret speakers.
"Family reunion time is over," he stated. "Sophia and I are coming for our granddaughter. And this time, we're bringing the entire Commission with us."
