Chapter 185 – The Mastermind Falls

Chapter 185 – The Mastermind Falls

The first light of dawn had barely reached the mountains when the alarm sounded.

Damian was standing beneath the olive tree with Elena when Marco came running across the courtyard.

“We found him.”

Damian turned.

“Who?”

Marco stopped in front of him, breathing heavily.

“Alessandro.”

The name changed everything.

Elena straightened.

“Alive?”

Marco nodded.

“One of the search teams found a hidden passage beneath the western ruins. It leads to an old railway tunnel.”

Damian’s expression hardened.

“Where does it lead?”

Marco looked at him.

“An abandoned station twelve kilometers from here.”

Damian didn’t hesitate.

“Take me there.”

Elena stepped forward.

“I’m coming.”

Damian looked at her.

For a moment, he almost objected.

Then he remembered the promise he had made.

No more standing in front of her.

No more deciding what she could handle.

He simply nodded.

“Together.”

The journey through the mountains was silent.

The final battle had exhausted everyone.

The road was littered with abandoned vehicles and debris from the previous night’s assault.

By the time they reached the old railway station, the sun had risen completely.

The station had been abandoned for decades.

Broken windows.

Rusting tracks.

Overgrown platforms.

It looked empty.

But Damian knew better.

Alessandro had survived too much to make his final mistake in the open.

Marco’s team surrounded the station.

Nikolai checked the northern entrance.

“Nothing.”

“Eastern side clear.”

“Southern tunnel secure.”

Damian looked at Elena.

“Stay close.”

She gave him a look.

“I’m not going anywhere.”

He smiled faintly.

“I know.”

They entered.

The station smelled of dust and old metal.

Their footsteps echoed through the empty halls.

Then they found the hidden door.

Behind it was a staircase descending underground.

Damian reached for the handle.

A voice came through the darkness.

“You finally came.”

Alessandro.

Damian opened the door.

The underground chamber was enormous.

Old railway equipment lined the walls.

A small table stood in the center.

On it were photographs.

Documents.

Newspapers.

Evidence of decades of manipulation.

And behind the table stood Alessandro.

He looked different.

His expensive coat was gone.

His face was bruised.

Blood stained one side of his shirt.

But his eyes remained cold.

“You destroyed everything,” Alessandro said.

Damian stepped forward.

“No.”

He looked around.

“You destroyed everything.”

Alessandro smiled.

“You still don’t understand.”

“I understand enough.”

Damian pointed toward the photographs.

“You manipulated my father.”

“You manipulated Matteo.”

“You turned Rossi against Moretti.”

“You destroyed families.”

“You used children and innocent people as pieces in a war you designed.”

Alessandro’s expression remained calm.

“I gave everyone what they wanted.”

“Power.”

“Revenge.”

“Control.”

He looked toward Elena.

“And love.”

Elena stepped beside Damian.

“You never understood love.”

Alessandro laughed.

“Love made you weak.”

“No.”

Elena answered.

“Love gave us something worth protecting.”

Alessandro’s expression darkened.

“You think you’ve won because you rescued your son?”

Damian stared at him.

“No.”

“I’ve won because my family is still standing.”

Alessandro shook his head.

“You’re exactly like your father.”

Damian froze.

“What did you say?”

“Your father believed he could end the war.”

“He was wrong.”

Alessandro reached into his coat and removed an old photograph.

Vittorio Rossi stood beside Alessandro.

Damian stared at it.

“Why were you with him?”

Alessandro smiled.

“Because once upon a time, your father and I were friends.”

Silence.

Elena looked at Damian.

He barely seemed to breathe.

“You knew him.”

“I knew him better than anyone.”

“What happened?”

Alessandro’s expression became bitter.

“He discovered what I was doing.”

“And he tried to stop you.”

“Yes.”

“That’s why you killed him.”

Alessandro shook his head.

“I didn’t kill Vittorio.”

Damian’s eyes narrowed.

“Then who did?”

Alessandro pointed toward the documents.

“Read them.”

Damian approached the table.

He picked up the first file.

It contained financial transfers.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

The documents revealed a secret organization operating behind the Rossi-Moretti conflict.

Alessandro had been part of it.

But he hadn’t created it.

Another name appeared repeatedly.

Luciano Vieri.

Alessandro’s father.

Damian looked up.

“You inherited this.”

“Yes.”

“You didn’t start the war.”

“No.”

Alessandro’s voice softened.

“I perfected it.”

Elena looked at the documents.

“Then why keep it going?”

Alessandro’s expression changed.

“Because when I finally understood the truth, everyone I loved was already dead.”

He looked toward Damian.

“I could have walked away.”

“But I chose revenge.”

Damian nodded slowly.

“And that choice destroyed you.”

Alessandro’s face hardened.

“You don’t know anything about me.”

“I know enough.”

Damian stepped closer.

“You had a choice.”

“So did I.”

“And I chose differently.”

For the first time, Alessandro looked uncertain.

He reached inside his coat.

Damian immediately moved.

Elena stepped beside him.

“Don’t.”

Alessandro stopped.

His hand slowly emerged.

No weapon.

A small photograph.

It showed Damian’s mother.

Young.

Smiling.

Standing beside Vittorio.

And Alessandro.

Damian stared at it.

“She knew.”

Alessandro nodded.

“She knew what my family had become.”

“And she tried to expose us.”

“What happened?”

“She disappeared.”

Damian’s face went pale.

“You’re saying she wasn’t killed?”

Alessandro looked directly at him.

“I never said she was.”

Before Damian could ask another question, a distant sound echoed through the tunnel.

Vehicles.

Alessandro smiled.

“You’re not the only one who came looking for me.”

Damian turned toward Marco.

“Who?”

Marco’s voice came through the radio.

“We have unknown vehicles approaching.”

Alessandro laughed.

“The organization is coming to erase the evidence.”

Elena looked at Damian.

“Then we need to get those files out.”

Damian nodded.

He turned toward Alessandro.

“You’re coming with us.”

Alessandro smiled.

“You think I’ll surrender?”

“No.”

Damian stepped forward.

“You’re going to face everyone you’ve hurt.”

Alessandro suddenly attacked.

Damian blocked him.

The two men crashed into the table.

Documents scattered across the floor.

Elena immediately began gathering the files.

Alessandro fought with desperation.

Not strength.

Desperation.

He knew his empire was gone.

His secrets were exposed.

His allies were abandoning him.

This was no longer a battle for power.

It was a battle over whether he would accept defeat.

Damian finally forced him backward.

Alessandro stumbled.

Damian stood over him.

“It’s over.”

Alessandro looked up.

“Kill me.”

Damian froze.

“That’s what you want?”

“You’re a Rossi.”

“You were raised for revenge.”

Damian shook his head.

“No.”

He stepped back.

“I’m not giving you that.”

Alessandro stared at him.

“You think mercy makes you better?”

“No.”

Damian answered.

“Choice does.”

Police sirens echoed from above.

The evidence had already been transmitted to authorities and neutral families.

Alessandro’s network was finished.

There was nowhere left to run.

He looked toward Elena.

“You changed him.”

She shook her head.

“He changed himself.”

Damian nodded.

“She’s right.”

Alessandro slowly lowered himself onto the floor.

For the first time, the mastermind behind decades of suffering looked old.

Not powerful.

Not frightening.

Just tired.

His empire had disappeared.

His allies had abandoned him.

His secrets had been exposed.

And the people he had spent years trying to destroy were standing together.

Marco entered the chamber with several armed officers.

“It’s finished.”

Damian nodded.

“Take him.”

Alessandro stood.

Before leaving, he looked at Damian.

“You’ll discover something eventually.”

Damian said nothing.

“You can’t escape the ashes.”

Damian looked at Elena.

Then thought of Lucian.

“No.”

He replied.

“But you can choose what you build from them.”

Alessandro was taken away.

The door closed behind him.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Elena approached Damian.

“It’s really over.”

He looked at the empty doorway.

“Yes.”

She slipped her hand into his.

Damian squeezed it.

Outside, the sun had climbed above the mountains.

The war was finished.

The mastermind had fallen.

But Damian knew the next battle would be harder.

They had to rebuild everything that had been destroyed.

Trust.

Families.

Territories.

Their lives.

And perhaps most importantly…

Themselves.

Elena rested her head against his shoulder.

“What happens now?”

Damian looked toward the rising sun.

“Now?”

He smiled.

“We go home.”

And for the first time in years…

Home no longer meant an empire.

It meant Elena.

It meant Lucian.

It meant the family they had fought so hard to reclaim.
