Chapter 183 – The Queen Rises
Chapter 183 – The Queen Rises
The doors slammed shut behind them.
For a moment, the world outside disappeared.
There was only the enormous central hall of Alessandro’s fortress, Damian and Elena standing at the bottom of the staircase, and Alessandro waiting above them.
He looked almost untouched by the chaos surrounding his empire.
His black coat was immaculate.
His expression was calm.
His eyes, however, were fixed on Elena.
“You should have stayed outside,” he said.
Elena’s expression hardened.
“You’ve spent too long deciding where I belong.”
She stepped forward.
“That ends tonight.”
Damian glanced at her.
There was no fear in her eyes.
Only determination.
He didn’t tell her to stay behind.
Didn’t tell her to let him handle it.
He simply nodded.
“Together.”
“Together.”
The first attack came from the balconies.
Several armed guards emerged from hidden entrances.
Damian immediately reached for Elena.
Instinctively, he moved to place himself between her and danger.
Elena caught his wrist.
“Don’t.”
He looked at her.
“I can handle myself.”
A faint smile touched Damian’s face.
“I know.”
He released her.
That small gesture meant more to Elena than any declaration.
For the first time, Damian wasn’t trying to stand in front of her.
He was standing beside her.
The hall erupted into movement.
Damian advanced toward the eastern corridor while Elena moved toward the opposite side.
They covered each other’s positions without needing to speak.
Elena had learned Damian’s instincts.
Damian had learned hers.
When he moved left, she anticipated the opening.
When she advanced, he watched the space behind her.
They weren’t protecting one another from the battle.
They were fighting through it together.
Marco’s voice came through their communications.
“Second floor secured.”
Nikolai followed.
“North corridor clear.”
Then Malik:
“Civilians are being evacuated.”
Damian looked toward Elena.
“We’re getting closer.”
She nodded.
“Then let’s finish this.”
They reached the main chamber.
The walls were covered with portraits.
Generations of Vieri ancestors stared down at them.
At the center stood an enormous table displaying maps of Italy.
Damian recognized several territories.
Some belonged to the Rossi family.
Others belonged to the Morettis.
Some belonged to families who had supposedly remained neutral.
Elena stared at the map.
“He planned all of this.”
“For years.”
Damian walked closer.
“He wanted every family dependent on him.”
Elena studied the documents.
“Not just dependent.”
She pointed toward a series of financial records.
“Controlled.”
A door opened behind them.
Alessandro entered.
“You finally understand.”
He walked toward the table.
“Your families fought over territory.”
“I controlled the people who controlled the territory.”
Damian’s expression hardened.
“You created the war.”
“No.”
Alessandro smiled.
“I gave people reasons to believe they needed one.”
Elena stepped forward.
“And you expected us to continue it.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Alessandro looked at her.
“Because people are easier to control when they’re afraid.”
Elena shook her head.
“Then you’ve misunderstood the one thing you couldn’t control.”
“What?”
She looked at Damian.
“Love.”
Alessandro’s smile vanished.
He raised his hand.
The chamber doors opened.
A group of armed guards rushed inside.
Damian immediately prepared to move.
Elena stepped beside him.
“Left.”
Damian nodded.
They moved together.
The battle was fast and chaotic.
But this time Elena didn’t wait for Damian to save her.
She anticipated attacks.
She used the environment.
She directed allies through the communications system.
“Marco, eastern corridor!”
“On it.”
“Nikolai, secure the stairwell!”
“Done.”
“Malik, get the injured out!”
“Moving.”
Damian heard her commands.
He smiled.
She wasn’t simply fighting anymore.
She was leading.
One of Alessandro’s senior commanders confronted her.
“You’re Moretti.”
Elena looked at him.
“Yes.”
“You should be fighting against the Rossis.”
She shook her head.
“I’m fighting for my family.”
The commander hesitated.
“And Damian is your family?”
Elena looked toward Damian.
“He is my equal.”
She turned back.
“And I am his.”
The commander lowered his weapon.
Several guards followed.
Alessandro watched from the upper balcony.
His expression became increasingly furious.
“You’re ruining everything.”
Elena looked up at him.
“No.”
She replied.
“I’m rebuilding it.”
Alessandro disappeared through a hidden door.
Damian immediately followed.
“Elena!”
She ran after him.
They entered a narrow passage.
At the end stood a massive steel door.
Damian examined it.
“Locked.”
Elena looked around.
Then noticed a control panel.
“Move.”
She studied the symbols.
Three family crests.
Rossi.
Moretti.
Vieri.
“This requires all three.”
Damian frowned.
“We don’t have a Vieri.”
A voice answered from behind them.
“You do.”
They turned.
The man standing there was Alessandro’s former adviser.
He held a small metal insignia bearing the Vieri crest.
“I’ve waited twenty years to see this family fall.”
He placed the insignia into the panel.
The door opened.
Beyond it was a vast underground command room.
Screens covered the walls.
Maps displayed every remaining battlefield.
Alessandro stood in the center.
He slowly turned.
“You.”
His adviser lowered his head.
“You should have known your empire would eventually betray you.”
Alessandro’s expression darkened.
“You’re a coward.”
“No.”
The man replied.
“I’m tired.”
Alessandro reached for a control panel.
The screens changed.
A countdown appeared.
05:00
Elena’s eyes widened.
“What is that?”
Damian looked at the system.
“Emergency destruction protocol.”
Alessandro smiled.
“If I cannot keep the empire…”
He pressed the button.
“…I’ll make sure nobody inherits it.”
The countdown began.
04:59
04:58
Damian looked at Elena.
“We need to stop it.”
She nodded.
They moved toward the control system.
Alessandro stepped between them.
“This is where you lose.”
Damian raised his fists.
“No.”
Elena stepped beside him.
“This is where you lose.”
Alessandro attacked.
Damian met him.
The two men collided in the center of the command room.
Years of hatred finally became physical.
But Elena didn’t stand aside.
She moved toward the control panel while Damian kept Alessandro occupied.
Alessandro noticed.
“You think you can outsmart me?”
Elena continued working.
“I already have.”
She disconnected one cable.
The countdown slowed.
03:41
Damian blocked Alessandro’s attack.
“Keep going!”
Elena pulled another connection.
The timer froze.
03:12
Silence.
She looked at Damian.
“It stopped.”
Damian smiled.
“Then let’s finish this.”
Alessandro looked around.
His empire was collapsing.
His allies had abandoned him.
His weapons were useless.
His final contingency had failed.
And the two people he had underestimated were standing together.
Not master and protected woman.
Not king and queen beneath him.
Equals.
Alessandro slowly backed toward the window.
“You think you’ve won.”
Damian stepped forward.
“We have.”
Elena corrected him.
“We will.”
Suddenly, the command room shook.
The fortress began to collapse.
The destruction protocol had not completely stopped.
It had only been delayed.
Alarms screamed.
The ceiling cracked.
Damian grabbed Elena’s hand.
“Move!”
They ran.
Behind them, Alessandro disappeared into the smoke.
Whether he had escaped…
Or been buried…
They didn’t know.
They emerged onto the fortress balcony.
Below them, their combined armies were evacuating the mountain.
Marco looked up.
“Damian!”
Damian raised his hand.
“We’re alive.”
Then he looked at Elena.
She was covered in dust.
Her hair was disheveled.
Her clothes were torn.
But she stood tall.
Damian smiled.
“You were incredible.”
Elena shook her head.
“We were.”
He nodded.
“Yes.”
The sun began rising beyond the mountains.
The first light touched the battlefield.
For the first time, Elena didn’t feel like Matteo’s daughter.
She didn’t feel like Damian’s wife.
She didn’t feel like a pawn caught between two empires.
She felt like herself.
A woman who had survived.
A mother.
A leader.
A queen.
Not because someone had placed a crown upon her head.
But because she had earned the right to stand beside the man who wore one.
Damian reached for her hand.
She took it.
Together, they watched the fortress disappear beneath the smoke.
The old empire was falling.
And something new was rising from its ashes.
