Chapter 169 – The Last Secret
Chapter 169 – The Last Secret
The leather folder lay unopened on Damian’s desk long after everyone had left the war room.
Outside, the estate remained awake. Searchlights swept across the grounds. Guards changed shifts in disciplined silence. Somewhere in the distance, Lucian’s laughter drifted through an open window as Malik entertained him with exaggerated stories of adventures from around the world.
For a brief moment, life still existed amid the war.
Inside the study, however, another battle was about to begin.
Elena entered quietly.
She found Damian standing before the fireplace, the flickering flames casting long shadows across the room.
“You’ve been avoiding me.”
she said softly.
Damian didn’t deny it.
“There are things I should have told you a long time ago.”
He picked up a worn leather journal from his desk.
His father’s journal.
The same journal he had discovered weeks earlier.
Only now…
He was finally ready to share everything.
Elena sat opposite him.
She noticed something unusual.
For the first time since she had met Damian…
He looked uncertain.
Not afraid.
Not angry.
Just…
Ashamed.
“I’ve told you pieces of the truth.”
he began.
“But never all of it.”
He opened the journal carefully.
Between its pages rested an old photograph.
It showed two young men standing beside a smiling woman.
One was Damian’s father, Vittorio Rossi.
The second was Matteo Moretti.
The woman between them was Isabella Moretti.
All three were laughing.
Not enemies.
Family.
Elena stared at the picture.
“They were friends.”
Damian nodded.
“More than friends.”
He turned another page.
“Our families were preparing to unite.”
“There was no war.”
“No hatred.”
“No blood feud.”
Elena looked up.
“Then why did everything change?”
Damian drew a slow breath.
“Because someone made sure it would.”
He handed her another document.
It was an old contract bearing both Rossi and Moretti seals.
The title read:
Treaty of Unification.
The agreement would have merged the two families’ legitimate businesses decades earlier, ending generations of rivalry before it ever truly began.
It had never been signed.
“The night before the ceremony…”
Damian continued,
“…someone murdered Vittorio’s younger brother.”
Elena frowned.
“The Rossis blamed the Morettis.”
“Yes.”
Damian answered.
“And the Morettis woke to find forged evidence proving the Rossis had poisoned Isabella’s husband.”
Elena slowly closed her eyes.
“Alessandro.”
Damian nodded.
“The first lie.”
He turned another page.
The journal contained letters written by his father.
One passage had been underlined several times.
‘If anything happens to me, protect Elena Moretti. She will one day become the bridge our families failed to build.’
Elena’s eyes widened.
“My name…”
“He wrote about me?”
Damian smiled sadly.
“Before you were even born.”
Silence settled between them.
Then Damian spoke the words he had hidden for years.
“When my father died…”
“…he gave me one final mission.”
Elena held her breath.
“I wasn’t ordered to kill you.”
He said quietly.
“I was ordered to find you.”
She blinked.
“What?”
“My father believed Alessandro would eventually come looking for Isabella’s bloodline.”
“He believed you would become the key.”
“So he made me promise…”
Damian’s voice faltered.
“…to protect you.”
Elena stared at him in disbelief.
“But when we first met…”
“You terrified me.”
“You threatened me.”
“You kidnapped me.”
Damian lowered his head.
“I failed.”
He admitted.
“I let hatred twist my father’s final wish.”
He stood and walked toward the window.
“For years…”
“I believed the Morettis had destroyed my family.”
“When I discovered you…”
“I convinced myself I could fulfill two purposes at once.”
“Protect you.”
“And punish the family I blamed.”
He closed his eyes.
“I told myself keeping you close was protection.”
“But somewhere along the way…”
“I crossed a line.”
The room was silent except for the crackling fire.
“I hurt you.”
Damian whispered.
“I frightened you.”
“I gave you reasons to run.”
“And when you finally did…”
“I realized I had become the very monster my father warned me never to become.”
Tears filled Elena’s eyes.
She remembered everything.
The fear.
The arguments.
The misunderstandings.
The nights she questioned whether Damian’s kindness was genuine or another form of control.
Now she understood.
He had never known which part of himself to trust.
The son seeking revenge…
Or the son honoring his father’s final wish.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
she asked quietly.
Damian laughed bitterly.
“Because I didn’t deserve forgiveness.”
Before Elena could answer, the study door opened gently.
Salvatore entered carrying another weathered box.
“I believe…”
he said,
“…this belongs here.”
Inside rested a sealed envelope.
Across the front, in faded ink, were the words:
For Damian Rossi and Elena Moretti—Only Together.
Damian exchanged a surprised glance with Elena.
He broke the ancient seal.
Inside was Isabella’s final letter.
“If you are reading this together…”
“Then love has already succeeded where pride failed.”
“You have discovered the truth.”
“Neither family was ever meant to destroy the other.”
“You were always meant to become one.”
Elena’s hands trembled.
Damian continued reading.
“The child born from both bloodlines will inherit more than power.”
“He will inherit the chance to end the war forever.”
“Protect him.”
“Not because he is important…”
“But because men consumed by greed will believe he is.”
Lucian.
Everything suddenly made sense.
Alessandro wasn’t simply hunting a child.
He believed Lucian could lead him to Isabella’s hidden legacy.
The final lines were addressed directly to Damian.
“Do not repeat our mistakes.”
“Choose love before revenge.”
“Even if it costs you everything.”
Damian slowly lowered the letter.
His eyes glistened.
“I spent years chasing revenge…”
he whispered.
“…when my father only wanted peace.”
Elena walked toward him.
She gently placed her hand against his face.
“You weren’t the only one living a lie.”
she said.
“I believed every Rossi wanted my family dead.”
She smiled sadly.
“We were both prisoners.”
For the first time in years…
There were no secrets between them.
No hidden motives.
No unanswered questions.
Only truth.
Painful.
Healing.
Complete.
A soft knock interrupted the moment.
Marco entered.
His expression was serious.
“I hate interrupting…”
he said.
“…but we’ve intercepted another transmission.”
He handed Damian a secure tablet.
The message contained only one sentence.
NOW THAT YOU KNOW THE TRUTH… COME AND SAVE WHAT REMAINS OF IT.
Beneath the message was a live image.
Matteo Moretti.
Bound.
Bruised.
Still alive.
But he wasn’t alone.
Standing beside him…
With a gun pointed at his head…
Was Luca Moretti.
Elena’s breath caught.
“My uncle…”
she whispered.
Luca looked directly into the camera.
His face was filled not with hatred…
But with heartbreaking regret.
“I made the wrong choice.”
he said quietly.
“And now…”
He looked over his shoulder at someone off-screen.
“…we’re all going to pay for it.”
The transmission ended.
Damian looked at Elena.
No words were needed.
The final secret had been revealed.
The past no longer held them captive.
Now…
The future demanded everything they had.
