Shadows of the Morning
The Truth He Buried
The sound of breaking glass echoed through the storage room.
Neither Adrian nor Cathy moved.
The shattered frame lay on the floor between them, pieces of glass scattered everywhere.
Cathy stared at Adrian as if she was looking at a complete stranger.
A criminal organization.
Those words continued to ring inside her head.
She wanted to believe she had heard wrong.
She wanted to believe this was all some terrible misunderstanding.
But the look on Adrian's face told her otherwise.
For the first time since she had met him, she saw something she had never seen before.
Regret.
Deep regret.
"Say something," Cathy finally whispered.
Adrian lowered his eyes.
For several moments, silence filled the room.
Then he slowly stepped forward.
"Cathy..."
"No."
She immediately stepped back.
"Don't come closer."
The pain in her voice hit Adrian harder than he expected.
He stopped moving.
His chest felt tight.
"Cathy, please let me explain."
"Explain what?" she asked, her voice shaking. "Explain that you were part of a criminal organization? Explain that dangerous people are looking for you? Explain that you lied to me this entire time?"
Every question felt like a knife.
Adrian could not answer immediately.
Because she was right.
He had lied.
Not because he wanted to hurt her.
But because he wanted to protect her.
The problem was that the truth had finally caught up with him.
"I never wanted you involved in this," Adrian said quietly.
Cathy laughed bitterly.
"Well, I am involved now."
Again, silence filled the room.
Finally, Adrian took a deep breath.
"If you want answers, I'll tell you everything."
Cathy crossed her arms.
"Then start talking."
Adrian looked down at the broken photograph.
The memories came rushing back instantly.
Memories he had spent years trying to forget.
"The Black Raven Group started over ten years ago," he began.
"It wasn't a normal organization. We dealt with illegal business, smuggling, money laundering, and things far worse."
Cathy felt sick.
The Adrian she knew was kind.
Protective.
Gentle.
How could he be connected to something so dark?
"There were four of us," Adrian continued.
"Victor, myself, and two others."
"The group became powerful very quickly."
His eyes darkened.
"But power changes people."
"What happened?" Cathy asked.
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"Greed happened."
The room became silent again.
"One of our partners betrayed us."
"Who?"
Adrian shook his head.
"I don't know."
Cathy frowned.
"What do you mean you don't know?"
"Because nobody ever found out."
He sighed heavily.
"The betrayal led to violence."
His voice became lower.
"Dangerous people got involved."
"What kind of dangerous people?"
Adrian looked directly at her.
"The kind of people who kill first and ask questions later."
A chill ran down Cathy's spine.
Suddenly, everything Victor had said made sense.
The target.
The danger.
The fear she had seen in Adrian's eyes.
It was all real.
"You left?" Cathy asked.
Adrian nodded.
"Yes."
"Why?"
A sad smile appeared on his face.
"Because I finally realized what I had become."
He walked toward the window.
The sunlight illuminated half of his face.
"I had money."
"I had power."
"But I couldn't sleep at night."
His voice sounded distant.
"I hated the man I was becoming."
For the first time, Cathy saw genuine pain in his eyes.
Not fear.
Not guilt.
Pain.
"So I left."
"And they just allowed you to leave?" Cathy asked.
Adrian laughed humorlessly.
"No."
His answer immediately caught her attention.
"What happened?"
"They tried to stop me."
The room became quiet.
"But I escaped."
Cathy swallowed hard.
"You've been hiding ever since?"
Adrian nodded.
"Yes."
"Then why are they looking for you now?"
That was the question Adrian had been asking himself since Victor arrived.
Before he could answer, a loud knock suddenly echoed through the mansion.
Both of them froze.
Another knock followed.
Then another.
The sound was urgent.
Adrian immediately became alert.
Something was wrong.
Very wrong.
A few seconds later, the storage room door burst open.
One of the bodyguards rushed inside.
His breathing was uneven.
His face looked pale.
"Sir!"
Adrian instantly stepped forward.
"What happened?"
The bodyguard swallowed hard.
"There is a problem."
"What problem?"
The guard hesitated.
Then he finally spoke.
"The front security gate has been breached."
Adrian's expression hardened immediately.
"What?"
The guard nodded.
"Our cameras went offline five minutes ago."
Fear crept into the room.
Adrian's heart began pounding.
Victor's warning flashed inside his mind.
They are coming.
No.
It couldn't be.
Not this fast.
"How many?" Adrian asked.
"We don't know."
The bodyguard's answer made everything worse.
At that moment, another guard's voice suddenly crackled through the communication device attached to the man's ear.
The guard listened.
His eyes widened.
Then he looked at Adrian.
The color had completely drained from his face.
"Sir..."
"What?"
The guard swallowed.
"They found Victor."
Adrian felt his stomach drop.
"Where?"
The guard's voice trembled.
"In the east garden."
"What happened to him?"
The room became silent.
The bodyguard looked terrified.
Finally, he answered.
"He's dead."
The words hit the room like thunder.
Cathy's eyes widened.
Adrian stood frozen.
Victor was dead.
And if Victor was dead, it meant only one thing.
The people from Adrian's past had finally arrived.
And now they were inside the mansion.
