Covenant Spies
Covenant Spies
Darius's POV
The arrow whizzed past my ear and buried itself in the tree behind me.
"Everyone down!" I shouted, throwing myself to the ground as more arrows flew through the air. The hunting party I was leading scattered for cover, but I could already smell something wrong about our invaders.
They didn't smell like normal dogs.
"Stay hidden," I ordered the others, then shifted into my wolf form. My silver hair helped me blend with the shadows as I crept toward where the arrows had come from.
What I found made my blood run cold.
Three wolves stood in a clearing, but they weren't really wolves anymore. Their eyes glowed red instead of regular colors, and their scent was all wrong - like death mixed with magic. When they moved, they were too fast, too quiet.
Covenant spies. Morgana had found us.
I'd seen dogs like this before, back when I still lived at the Celestial Court. Morgana's followers who'd let her put dark magic into their bodies. They were stronger and faster than normal wolves, but they weren't really living anymore either.
One of them turned its head toward my hidden spot, and I saw its face. Half of it was rotted away, showing bone underneath.
"The Phantom Alpha is here," it said in a voice like grinding stones. "I can smell his fear."
"I'm not afraid of walking corpses," I growled, stepping out of the shadows.
All three of them laughed, a sound that made my skin crawl.
"You should be," the boss said. "We bring a message from our boss. She has something that belongs to you."
Before I could ask what they meant, one of them pulled out a small mirror that glowed with silver light. Images appeared in it, and I felt my heart stop.
It was Lyra. She was kneeling in what looked like a graveyard, with Morgana standing over her. The StarCrown was on Morgana's head, burning with stolen power.
"Your little princess tried to be a hero," the spy added. "She thought she could face our boss alone. How foolish."
In the mirror, I watched Lyra fall as chains made of dark magic wrapped around her. She was screaming my name.
"Let her go," I snarled, my wolf form getting larger as rage filled me.
"Oh, we will," the spy said mockingly. "Our mistress is very giving. She'll trade the girl's life for yours."
"What?"
"Come to the old cemetery outside Millfield. Come alone, and submit yourself to High Priestess Morgana. Do this, and the StarBlood child will be allowed to live."
I felt sick. This was exactly what I'd been afraid of. Lyra was brave and strong, but she was also kind. Too kind for her own good. Of course she'd try to face Morgana alone to protect everyone else.
"You have one hour," the spy added. "If you don't come, your dear Lyra dies. And then we'll come for your little refuge anyway."
The mirror went dark, and the three spies melted back into the darkness like they'd never been there at all.
I shifted back to human form, my hands shaking with rage. How had this happened? How had Morgana found Lyra so quickly?
"Alpha?" One of my pack members, a young wolf named Jake, crept out from behind a tree. "What did they want?"
"Get back to Haven's Rest," I ordered. "Now. Tell everyone to prepare for attack."
We ran through the trees faster than we'd ever run before. My mind was racing as fast as my feet. This had to be a trick. Morgana wouldn't just let Lyra go, even if I submitted myself. She wanted both of us dead.
But what choice did I have? I couldn't let Lyra die because of me.
When we reached Haven's Rest, chaos was already breaking out. Seraphina met us at the gates, her face white with fear.
"Darius, thank the spirits you're back," she gasped. "Something's wrong. The protective barriers around our area are flickering. And there are strange wolves watching us from the forest."
"How many?" I asked sadly.
"At least twenty that we've spotted. But they're not charging, just... watching. Like they're waiting for something."
I looked around at the wolves gathered in our courtyard. These weren't fighters. They were refugees, outsiders, wolves who'd come here seeking safety. Most of them had never been in a real fight.
"Listen to me," I called out, my Alpha voice carrying to every part of Haven's Rest. "We're under danger. Morgana's bond has found us."
Worried comments spread through the crowd.
"But we're not helpless," I continued. "This place has protected us before, and it will protect us again. Everyone needs to follow the safety plans we practiced."
Old Martha, one of the first wolves I'd saved, stepped forward. "What about Lyra? Where is she?"
My throat felt tight. "She's... she's in trouble. I'm going to get her back."
"It's a trap," Seraphina said quietly, moving to stand beside me. "You know it's a trap."
"Of course it's a trap," I answered. "But I can't leave her there."
"Then we go together," said a voice from the crowd. It was Thomas, a former slave who'd arrived just a few weeks ago. "All of us."
"No," I said strongly. "This is my job. I brought her here, and I should have protected her better."
"She's not just your responsibility," Martha said, her old eyes fierce. "She's family. We all are. That's what you taught us when you saved us."
More voices joined in, agreeing. These wolves were ready to fight for each other, ready to die for each other. It made me proud and scared at the same time.
"The barriers are failing faster," Seraphina reported, checking a magical device on her wrist. "Whatever those spies are doing, it's working."
I made a choice. "Split into three groups. The best fighters come with me to the cemetery. The second group stays here to protect Haven's Rest. The third group takes the children and old to the backup shelter in the caves."
"Darius," Seraphina said quickly, "look."
She pointed to the sky, where dark clouds were gathering even though it had been clear moments before. Lightning flashed, but it was the wrong color - blood red instead of white.
"She's starting the ritual," I realized with fear. "Morgana's using Lyra's power right now."
The temperature dropped so fast I could see my breath. Ice began forming on the ground, and the trees around us started going black and dying.
"How long do we have?" Jake asked, his voice shaking.
Before I could answer, a scream echoed across the forest. It was Lyra's voice, full of pain and terror.
"Not long enough," I whispered.
That's when I saw them. Red eyes, dozens of them, moving through the woods toward us. The covenant's army was here.
"Everyone ready?" I called out.
"Ready!" came the answer from fifty brave voices.
I shifted into my wolf form and howled - not a howl of fear, but of anger. Whatever happened next, we would face it together.
But as the first shadow creatures broke through our failing barriers, I couldn't shake the thought that we were already too late.
In the distance, Lyra screamed again, and this time, the sound cut off suddenly.
The quiet that followed was worse than any scream.
