Chapter 48 PREDATORY STEP

Chapter 48 PREDATORY STEP
CHAPTER 48. PREDATORY STEP

IRIS'S POV

I would have assumed that I was going to die. I mean, what normal human jumps off a vertical drop of several hundred feet and lives to tell the tale?

But as the air screams around us, I am held securely in Ciara’s arms. The tight, unyielding way she cradles my weight against her chest re-shows exactly how much ancient, terrifying power she wields. There is not a single ounce of panic in her violet eyes. However, the exact same cannot be said for me. I am clutching her shoulders with a frantic, white-knuckled grip, burying my face deep into the fabric of her dark cloak. I scream out my lungs into the darkness, the sheer, violent rush of the wind brushing all around my skin like shards of ice. My long, crimson hair flares out into the shadows like a streak of fire, wild and untamed, until a sudden, massive thud echoes through the air.

A superb, muffled blast of kinetic energy ripples outward, followed by the heavy cracking of stone beneath our feet. The violent descent halts instantly.

I blink rapidly, my eyes snapping open in pure shock as Ciara safely drops my feet to the solid ground. I stumble for a brief moment, my knees buckled and trembling, before I manage to regain my balance on the stone pavement of the campus grounds. I slowly look behind me, my gaze traveling up the towering dormitory building we had just plummeted from.

Oh my God. Kaelen’s private quarters weren't just on a high floor. His lodge was situated at the very apex of the structure—a sprawling, fortress-like penthouse. We had just jumped that entire distance, a lethal drop neutralized by a cushion of raw magic.

I don't look at Ciara, but I can feel her satisfaction. She is smiling down at me, her chest heaving slightly as she adjusts her cloak. "See?" she says, her voice smooth and conversational. "I told you there is absolutely nothing we cannot accomplish when we pool our elements. If you had attempted a plunge like that alone, your fragile system would have barely survived the impact."

I am still gazing up at the stone tower in a total daze. What the fuck is going on with my life? The realization leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. She isn't even giving me a real chance to make a conscious choice for myself. She is systematically making every single choice for me, dragging me into her rebellion.

Before I can form a protest, the sharp, rhythmic crunching of footsteps begins to echo across the stone pavement nearby. A cluster of multiple figures is rapidly heading toward our exact location.

Ciara acts on pure instinct. Her fingers wrap tightly around my wrist, and with a swift, spinning motion that feels like the vortex of a localized tornado, she drags my resisting weight behind her. She pulls me into a narrow, shadow-drenched corner situated between two rows of heavy brick buildings. She presses her palm against my shoulder, holding me down against the stone wall.

"Let's wait right here," she whispers into my ear, her violet eyes flashing with a warning light. "Keep perfectly still."

Before I can breathe, a procession of dark silhouettes emerges from the heavy shadows of the night. My breath catches in my throat as I recognize the leading figure. That’s Elder Cyphros, his posture stiff and radiating a suffocating authority. Walking closely beside him is Kaelen. They are engaged in a tense, hushed, but deeply volatile discussion. Trailing a few paces behind them is a squad of broad-shouldered werewolf bodyguards and a blur of other robed Elders, their eyes tracking the dark path. The entire group is marching toward the perimeter gates, heading straight toward the sacred grounds where the diagnostic ritual is scheduled to take place.

"Look, Elder, I highly think you should reconsider the timing of this," Kaelen is saying, his rich baritone voice laced with an urgent, protective frustration that cuts through the quiet night. "I understand exactly how you feel about our hierarchy, what the rogue covens represent, and whatever deep-seated belief the Council chooses to maintain. But we just have to rethink this immediate trial. We need to analyze the anomaly first."

The words force the entire procession to a sudden, grinding halt. Elder Cyphros spins around, his heavy boots snapping against the pavement as he faces the young Alpha. Even in the dim light of the lanterns, the blatant displeasure burning in his eyes is terrifying.

"I don't really understand where this sudden hesitation is originating from, Kaelen," Elder Cyphros says, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that vibrates against the brickwork of our hiding spot. "This is a law that has stood absolute for a very, very long time. We didn't make this choice for the witches. They made the choice themselves the exact moment they declared themselves enemies against our treaty. Do you honestly expect me to stand by and witness another potential traitor walking freely within our academy walls?"

I clench my fists tightly against my thighs, my heart thumping a frantic rhythm as I listen from the darkness.

"Why do you care so much about this human stray?" Cyphros demands, taking a dominant step forward. "We haven't even executed the diagnostic ritual yet. The mere fact that you keep pushing for a delay means you possess a very deep, internal understanding that she will definitely turn out to be a witch."

Kaelen exhales a long, ragged breath, his tensed shoulders dropping just a fraction as he takes a cautious step back to manage the Elder's aura. "I just... I just hope you can calm down the council's aggression for a moment, sir. I feel, down to my blood, that there is far more to her lineage than a simple spy network. We shouldn't jump to catastrophic conclusions before the blood is tested."

Elder Cyphros squeezes his eyes into dangerous, calculating slits, his gaze boring into the future leader. He steps even closer, his imposing frame blotting out the light. "So, let’s play out your scenario, boy. What if she turns out to be a witch at the end of the day? What exactly are you suggesting we do with her?" he asks, his tone a lethal trap.

I can see the crimson tint behind the Elder's pupils beginning to glow, mapping out his dark veins as he catalogs Kaelen’s micro-expressions, waiting for a reply that will give him a reason to strike for insubordination.

Kaelen hesitates. His jaw locks, his lips parting slightly as if he wants to scream a defense, but absolutely nothing comes out. The silence hangs heavy and suffocating over the pavement.

Elder Cyphros lets out a harsh, mocking scoff, turning away with a wave of his hand. "I thought as much," he sneers, his boots resuming their steady march. "Come on. We must head to the sacred grounds immediately. And Kaelen? Do me a very big favor by bringing the girl down from your private quarters now. We do not have another second of the Council's time to waste."

Within moments, the Elders and their guards disappear into the darkness of the path, their footsteps fading into the distance. Kaelen is left entirely alone in the center of the campus grounds. He looks completely occupied, weighed down by the impossible choices of his position. He closes his eyes tight and takes a deep, ragged breath, his large fists clenching so hard I can hear the knuckles pop from our hiding place.

I slowly turn my head to look at Ciara. The witch shifts her gaze to meet mine, her sharp chin lifting as she shrugs her shoulders beneath her cloak.

"I told you," she whispers, her voice dripping with a quiet, tragic triumph. "Let's just go, Iris. There is absolutely nothing you can do to change his mind. He cannot fight the Council for you. He won't risk his throne."

I don't know what to think; I just feel profoundly, violently conflicted. I stand rooted to the stone, my entire body shaking with an erratic adrenaline. I can see that Kaelen genuinely, truly wants to help me find a loophole, but the hard reality that he couldn't stand up to Elder Cyphros’s absolute authority right now surely speaks a lot. His loyalty is chained to his pack.

But beneath the fear of betrayal, a cold confusion grips my brain. What if, after all this entire trouble and accusation, I end up proving them all wrong? What if the diagnostic ritual reveals that I am not a witch? What if the energy boiling my veins belongs to the vampires? Or the werewolves? Or some weird, forgotten fantasy creature that the supernatural world has never witnessed before? This is a realm of monsters and magic; there are a million impossible possibilities, and anything could happen when the blood hits the altar.

I shake my head violently, the thoughts pulling my sanity apart. I don't even know which choice is the right one to make.

"Make the right choice, Iris," Ciara coaxes, her cold fingers tightening around my wrist. "We need to run."

I clench my fists until my nails dig into my palms. I look back across the dark pavement toward Kaelen. He is still standing in the exact same spot, a solitary silhouette lost in the labyrinth of his own thoughts. I really, desperately want to understand this thing vibrating between our souls. I want to break away from the witch, run over to him, and scream a hundred questions into his face. I need to understand what the hell is going on with my biology, why I have been dreaming about his golden eyes for months, and why I feel this insatiable, terrifying craving for his presence—a hunger that has dominated my subconscious for almost a year, even though I never knew his name until today.

As I watch his distant form, the internal conflict reaches a breaking point.

Without warning, a warm, violent sensation begins to pull deep and low in my belly. It isn't a tingle—it’s a physical, agonizing tug, as if an invisible, molten cord has snapped into existence between the two of us across the distance, binding our essences together. The connection hits my system with the force of an electric shock.

I gasp out loud, my hand flying to my chest as a sudden, unbearable pain rips through my lungs. My tensed muscles fail entirely, and I find myself stumbling out of the corner, my knees crashing hard against the stone pavement.

Ciara looks down at my collapsed form, her features warping into a mask of pure panic. "Iris? Are you okay?" she whispers frantically, her voice shaking as she reaches down to pull me back into the shadows.

But it’s entirely too late.

The physical displacement of my magic leaves a localized wave of heat blasting through the empty space, altering the atmosphere of the clearing.

"Who's there?"

Kaelen’s voice cuts through the darkness like thunder.

We both snap our heads up, our breaths hitching in unison. Across the pavement, the Alpha has spun around, his head tilting as his hyper-acute senses lock directly onto our coordinates. Through the veil of the shadows, I watch as the gold behind his pupils suddenly ignites, burning with a fierce, terrifying intensity that looks almost like the midday sun. His jaw sets, his massive shoulders squaring as he takes a heavy, predatory step closer toward the darkness where we are hiding.
