Chapter 85 Like a meal
~ Anyssa's Pov ~
“Yes, I did,” he said, sounding distant. There was just something off, especially seeing him with Ruby.
I don't trust her. I don't think I trust her.
After all, she hasn't been my favorite person. She's always hated me, that I can always remember.
“Why do you sound like you're mourning someone?” I said.
“What?”
“When you were talking about Ruby's late husband, you sounded like you were mourning him.”
He kept silent for a while until he shot me a quick glare.
“He was too young to die that way.”
It felt like I was actually there. I had this guilt in my chest…aching.
I was a hundred percent sure that I didn't know him, but maybe in my past life I did?We finally got home, and Ronan picked up some pillows and went to the guest bedroom. There was no need to ask him questions; I knew it was because of our discussion.
I took a quick shower and headed to bed.
\~~~~~
I woke up, sweat drenching my nightie. The air conditioning was on, but my breaths were quick. Those same dreams. They'd been flashes in my head for a while.
I got out of bed, walked into the bathroom, and washed my face. I stared into the mirror, taking deep breaths.
I don't feel like I'm living. I feel like I've been surviving. You know that feeling where you sense there's more to life than this? A feeling where you know so many secrets are hidden?
So many things to unravel. So much pent-up guilt in your chest?
I closed my eyes, inhaled and exhaled for a few seconds. Staring at my reflection felt more like staring into blank space. What even am I?
I've been trying to paint, using that as a coping mechanism, but unfortunately, it isn't working much. Ronan thinks I'm unaware of the fact that he's been buying my paintings, and those clients aren't actually fake.
Come on, I'm not stupid.
I strolled out of the room and walked down the corridor.
Memories are so essential. Losing three years of them feels like I'm nothing other than a fleeting emptiness moving without any direction.
I paused when I saw a figure standing in the hallway, close to the window.
“Ronan?”
He turned the minute he heard my voice. From where I stood, I could easily see his features with the help of the night light.
“What are you doing here? Why are you still up?” I got closer to where he stood.
“I couldn't sleep,” I lied.
He sighed. “Me either.”
“Ronan.”
“Yes, baby?”
“Was I ever a bad wife to you? Did we hate each other?”
“No, you were amazing. So amazing that it felt like a fairytale.”
“What changed?”
“Everything,” he whispered.
We stood there, hands holding each other's, but we said nothing. We just looked up, enjoying the night sky and the stars.
“He was my son. Ruby's late husband.”
My heart broke instantly. No wonder he didn't want to talk about it. No wonder the topic felt too fragile when it came to him.
“I'm sorry, I didn't—”
“It's fine. It's not your fault.”
“What was he like?”
“Mavis?”
Mavis…sounds familiar.
“Mavis was free-spirited. Although we didn't spend a lot of time together, I knew he loved me. He always did things to get my approval. I think he was so obsessed with getting my approval that he hurt himself in the long run.”
“I'm sorry,” I said, looking up at him. I brought his hands to my lips and pecked them.
“You deserve the world. I'm sure Mavis would agree if he was here.”
He smiled, one that didn't reach his eyes. His hands tucked a strand of my hair behind my ears.
“Losing someone you love is terrible. I can understand. When my mom died, it felt like the world was against me. I had no one. But this is different because you have me, Ronan. I am your wife, and I will always be here for you, no matter what.”
His eyes were teary, but he said no words. I held him close, kissed the top of his head and his cheeks.
My heart thrummed loud in my chest as he drew nearer, his face close to mine. I closed my eyes, my hands touching his tight jaw and beautiful face.
The moment I felt his lips on mine, I could breathe properly. I pulled closer, and so did he. No more walls, no more lies between us.
He nibbled on my lower lip, and I moaned, pushing my fingers through his hair. He picked me up, hands going around my hips and waist as he pushed me into the wall. My legs wrapped around his waist as my fingers lazily slid over his taut chest.
He felt so strong…so hot.
The kiss deepened, and it became hotter. We could barely catch our breaths with every kiss. Every touch felt so amazing. His hands roamed my hips, ass, and stomach.
Moans slipped through my lips, uncontrolled.
Soon enough, we pushed through the closest room, the door coming ajar as he kicked it. I wrapped my arms around his neck as I rubbed my breasts over his chest.
“Fuck,” he cursed as he dropped me on the bed.
He stripped in front of me, shirt off, pants off, and I couldn't help my watering mouth when I stared at his hard cock.
“Wow,” I said, and he smiled.
“You're… you're… will you fit?”
“Yes, I will, babe.”
“Stroke it,” I said. It felt uncontrolled. My insides churned beautifully, my thighs dripping with need.
He did just as I said, a satisfaction spreading through my chest as I watched him. The more he stroked, the harder he grew, the more he groaned with need and just the sound of that made me wetter.
Without saying a word, I pulled off my nightshirt, then my pants. I lay on the bed, naked and ready with want.
“What are you waiting for? Eat me out like I'm a meal, Mr. King.”
