Chapter 26 The Confrontation
Chapter 26 The Confrontation
Marisol’s POV
The isolation wing of the Valerius Tower didn’t smell like the cathedral ruins. It didn’t smell like the damp earth of the tunnels or the salt of the sea. It smelled of expensive filters and static electricity. It was a sterile, white-on-white nightmare designed to make a person lose their sense of time, space, and sanity.
I woke up bolted to a bed that felt like a slab of ice.
My magic was a dull ache, suppressed by the silver-mesh dampeners built into the very walls of the room. But my blood—my blood was singing. Dante’s Alpha essence was still roaring through my veins, a hot, golden tide that felt like a permanent mark on my soul. He had purged the Vein’s poison, but he had replaced it with himself.
The door hissed open.
Dante didn’t walk in; he invaded. He was dressed in a black tactical uniform, his eyes a dark, turbulent gold that looked like a storm at sea. He looked exhausted, lethal, and utterly betrayed.
"How long?" he asked. No greeting. No 'how are you feeling.' Just a voice that sounded like grinding stones.
I sat up, the silk sheets sliding down my bruised skin. I didn't reach for the robe at the foot of the bed. If he wanted to look at the woman he’d saved—and the spy he’d caught—he could see every damn inch of me.
"From the night in the shipping container," I said, my voice raspy. "The moment you marked me, the link was open. I just... left a door ajar."
Dante let out a sharp, jagged laugh. He stepped closer, the air pressure in the room spiking with his rage. "A door ajar? You planted a leech in my subconscious, Marisol. Every time I touched you, every time I shared my bed with you, you were digging through my secrets like a common thief."
"I am a revolutionary, Dante! What the fuck did you expect?" I snapped, swinging my legs over the side of the bed. The dampeners made me dizzy, but I stood up anyway, facing him. "You’re the King of the Syndicate. You were planning to bulldoze my life. I used the only weapon I had—the Bond you forced on me."
"I didn't force the Bond!" he roared, slamming his hand against the wall beside my head. The reinforced glass shivered. "I fought it! I tried to reject you to save us both from this exact fucking moment! But you... you used the intimacy. You used the way I looked at you when I thought no one was watching."
He leaned in, his face inches from mine. I could smell the bourbon on his breath and the raw, animal heat of his wolf.
"Did you enjoy it, Mari? Watching me struggle? Watching me choose you over my own council while you were taking notes for your little rebellion?"
"It wasn't like that," I whispered, though the lie felt thin. "At first, yes. It was a mission. But then... the things I saw... the way you cared for Enzo, the way you hated the corruption you were born into... I saw the man behind the crown, Dante. And I fell for him."
"Don't you dare use that word," he hissed, his hand gripping my jaw, forcing me to look at him. "You don't get to talk about love while you’re holding a knife to my heart. You’ve been spying on my soul, and you expect me to believe you have one?"
"I did what I had to do for my people! Just like you murdered Miller to save yours!" I shoved his chest, my heart hammering against my ribs. "We’re the same, Dante. Two monsters pretending we’re not, just to get through the night."
"We are nothing alike," he growled.
He lunged for me, but it wasn't a strike. He grabbed me by the waist and hauled me against him, his mouth crashing onto mine with a violence that made my teeth ache.
This wasn't a kiss. It was an interrogation. It was an assault of tongues and teeth, a desperate attempt to drown out the words with the only language we had left: the Bond.
I fought him at first, my fists pounding against his shoulders, but the Alpha blood in my system reacted to his touch like a match to gasoline. I let out a low, frustrated moan, my fingers tangling in his dark hair as I pulled him closer.
The argument didn't end; it just shifted into the physical.
He stripped his tactical vest with a frantic, shaking hand, tossing it onto the floor. I ripped at the buttons of his shirt, needing the friction of his skin against mine to stop the shivering. He threw me back onto the bed, pinning my wrists above my head with one hand.
"You want to know my secrets, Mari?" he rasped, his eyes glowing a predatory gold as he looked down at me. "You want to see what’s inside? Here. Look at this."
He entered me with a brutal, single-minded thrust that made my back arch and a sharp, unfiltered scream escape my throat. It was aggressive, primal, and stripped of any tenderness. He wasn't being a lover; he was being a conqueror. He was trying to reclaim the space I’d stolen from his mind.
"Is this... in your files... too?" he breathed, his pace turning frantic, his hips slamming against mine with a rhythmic, punishing force.
I wrapped my legs around his waist, my nails digging into the muscles of his back, drawing blood. "Fuck you, Dante," I moaned, my head thrashing against the pillow. "I... I hate you."
"Good," he growled, his mouth finding the mark on my neck and biting down until I saw stars. "Hate me. It’s the only honest thing you’ve ever given me."
The smut was raw and unfiltered, a collision of two people who had run out of lies. Every thrust was a question, every gasp an answer. We used our bodies to communicate the things our pride wouldn't allow—the fear, the obsession, the terrifying reality that even with the betrayal, we were the only two people in the world who truly understood each other.
The silver dampeners in the walls hummed, trying to suppress the magic, but the energy we were generating was too much. The air in the room grew heavy, saturated with the scent of sex and power. Dante’s wolf was fully forward now, his movements animalistic, driven by a need to mark me so deeply that I’d never be able to look at another man—or another secret—again.
I met him move for move, my hips rising to meet his, my magic flickering in the violet veins of my arms. I wasn't submissive. I was a storm, and he was the only thing solid enough to ground me.
"Look at me," he commanded, his voice a guttural vibration.
I opened my eyes, my vision blurred by sweat and tears. He was staring at me with a raw, agonizing hunger that made my chest ache. He wasn't looking at a spy. He was looking at his mate.
We hit the climax together, a shattering explosion of gold and violet that felt like the tower itself was shaking. I clung to him, my body trembling with the aftershocks, my heart drumming a frantic rhythm against his.
For a few minutes, there was only the sound of our labored breathing. Dante stayed buried inside me, his head resting in the crook of my neck, his weight a comforting, crushing reality.
Then, he pulled back.
The coldness returned to his eyes instantly, a shutter falling over the man I’d just seen. He stood up and began to dress, his movements efficient and distant.
"You stay here," he said, not looking at me. "The isolation wing is shielded against the Vein and your little 'Trojan Horse' tricks. You aren't leaving until I’ve scrubbed every trace of your magic from my systems."
"Dante—"
"I saved your life, Mari," he said, pausing at the door. He turned, and the look on his face was one of absolute, chilling finality. "But don't mistake mercy for forgiveness. You’re a prisoner of the Syndicate now. And as of an hour ago, the execution order for the Southern Covens has been signed."
My blood went cold. "You... you signed it?"
"I had to prove my loyalty to the Council after you ruined the wedding," he said, his voice flat. "I saved you, so I had to give them someone else. Your friends are being rounded up as we speak."
He stepped out, and the door hissed shut with a heavy, metallic click.
I sat up, the sheets cold against my skin. I looked at the white walls, the silver mesh, and the empty space where he’d just been. I had his blood in my veins, his mark on my neck, and his secrets in my head.
But as the first screams of the purge echoed through the city outside, I realized I had something else.
I reached out with my mind, searching for the "Trojan Horse" I’d planted. It was suppressed, but it wasn't gone. Through the tiny, flickering link, I felt a new sensation. Not from Dante.
From the Tower itself.
The building wasn't just steel and glass. It was built on the Vein. And the Vein was screaming.
