Chapter 21 The Choice
Chapter 21 The Choice
Enzo’s POV
The "Black Box" wasn't just a cell; it was a physical manifestation of the Syndicate’s cruelty. The walls were lined with silver-treated lead, dampening my wolf’s senses until I felt like I was blind, deaf, and drowning in slow motion.
The shackles around my wrists were worse. Silver-infused iron. Every time I breathed, the metal bit into my skin, sending a searing, acidic heat through my veins. It didn't just hurt; it was a constant, agonizing reminder that my own blood—my own family—had put me here.
"Dante, you better be planning a fucking massacre," I wheezed, my forehead resting against the cold, sweating stone of the wall.
I’d spent my life as the Alpha’s shadow. I was the one who cleaned the blood from the marble, the one who took the bullets Dante didn't see coming. But Silas and the Council didn't care about loyalty. To them, I was just a pawn—a piece of meat to be dangled in front of a hungry King.
The heavy iron door at the end of the corridor groaned.
I tensed, my muscles screaming in protest. I expected the heavy thud of Silas’s boots or the rhythmic click of Sloane’s heels. I expected more questions about the "truce" at the docks, or perhaps the cold edge of an executioner’s blade.
What I got was the scent of damp earth and crushed wildflowers.
"Sofia?" I whispered, my voice sounding like it had been dragged over broken glass.
A small, hooded figure darted into the sliver of light outside my bars. She moved with a frantic, desperate grace. She pulled back her hood, revealing the wild dark curls and the fierce, amber eyes of Marisol’s younger sister.
"Enzo," she breathed, her hands clutching the bars. Her face was pale, smudged with soot from the riots outside. "Oh gods, look at you."
"Sofia, get the fuck out of here," I growled, trying to pull back into the shadows so she wouldn't see the state of my wrists. "If the Sentinels catch a Vega in the sub-levels, they won't even wait for a trial. They’ll gut you and hang you from the tower."
"Then they’ll have to catch me first," she snapped, her voice trembling but defiant.
She reached into the satchel at her side and pulled out a small glass jar filled with a glowing, honey-colored salve. "Mari told me about the silver-shackles. She said the only thing that stops the burn is ironwort and crushed moon-pearl. Hold still."
"Sofia, no—"
"I said hold still, you stubborn wolf!"
She reached through the bars, her small, warm fingers grabbing my bruised, burning hand. The contact was like an electric shock. In this dead, silver-dampened hell, her touch was the only thing that felt alive.
She began to spread the salve over the raw, weeping wounds on my wrists. The relief was instantaneous. The cool, magical paste neutralized the silver's sting, allowing my wolf to let out a long, ragged breath of relief.
"Why are you here?" I asked, my voice dropping to a low, dangerous register. "You should be at the botanica. You should be hiding."
"Mari is busy starting a revolution," Sofia whispered, her eyes locked on mine. She didn't let go of my hand. Her thumb traced the edge of the shackle, a gesture so tender it made my heart ache more than the silver ever could. "And Mateo... Mateo is scaring me, Enzo. He’s not himself. I didn't have anywhere else to go."
She looked up at me, and I saw the raw, unfiltered terror she was hiding. She was just a girl, caught in the crossfire of two monsters.
"You came to the lion’s den because you were scared?" I asked, a dark, jagged laugh escaping my chest.
"I came because I couldn't let you die alone in the dark," she said.
She stepped closer, her body pressing against the iron bars. The heat coming off her was intoxicating. I was starving—not just for food, but for the touch of someone who didn't want a piece of my soul.
I reached through the bars, my hands cupping her face. I knew it was a mistake. I knew this was the "Forbidden Choice"—the thing that would destroy whatever was left of my life. But as the sirens wailed in the High District above us, I didn't care about the Syndicate.
"You're going to get us both killed," I whispered, my thumb brushing her lower lip.
"Then let's make it worth it," she replied.
I pulled her toward the bars, my mouth crashing onto hers.
It was a desperate, filthy kiss. It tasted of salt, iron, and the sweet, herbal tang of her magic. I groaned into her mouth, my tongue searching for hers with a hunger that was purely animal. She whimpered, her hands tangling in my hair, pulling me closer until the cold iron of the bars was a painful barrier between our chests.
I wanted her. I wanted to rip these bars out of the stone and bury myself in her until the world stopped burning. My hands slid down her back, pulling her hips flush against the cage. Even through the silver-dampened haze, the friction of her body against mine sent a surge of heat to my groin that made me growl.
"Sofia," I rasped against her lips, my teeth grazing her jaw. "If I get out of here... I'm never letting you go back to that slum. I'm taking you so far away from this war—"
"You're not going anywhere, Enzo."
The voice was like a bucket of ice water.
I shoved Sofia back, my heart stopping.
Silas stood at the end of the corridor. He wasn't alone. Six Silver Sentinels stood behind him, their spears leveled at the bars. The Elder looked at us with a disgusted, cold amusement, his fingers stroking the silver handle of his cane.
"A Vega in the dungeons," Silas mused, his voice echoing in the dead air. "And here I thought the 'Purification' would have to wait until the morning."
"Run, Sofia!" I roared, throwing myself against the bars, the silver shackles screaming as I strained against them. "Run!"
But the Sentinels were already moving. Two of them grabbed Sofia by the arms, dragging her away from the cell. She struggled, her heels kicking at the stone, her amber eyes wide with a terror that tore my soul in half.
"Enzo!" she screamed.
"Let her go, Silas!" I snarled, my wolf’s gold finally breaking through the silver-dampened dark. "She’s a child! She has nothing to do with this!"
"She is a Vega," Silas said, stepping up to my cell. He looked at me through the bars, his eyes as dead as a shark’s. "And she is the perfect wedding present for our Alpha."
He looked back at the guards. "Take her to the Cathedral. If the 'Underground Queen' tries to crash the ceremony, we’ll see how well she fights while her sister’s throat is under a blade."
"You piece of shit!" I lunged for him, my hands catching the bars, the silver burning my palms until the smell of scorched flesh filled the air.
Silas didn't even flinch. He leaned in, his face inches from mine.
"You made your choice, Enzo. You chose a witch over your blood. Now, you get to watch the bloodline be wiped clean."
He turned to the guards holding a sobbing Sofia. "And as for the Lieutenant... bring the 'Culling' kit. If he likes the girl so much, he can watch the wedding from a front-row seat. In pieces."
The heavy iron door slammed shut, plunging the corridor back into darkness.
I fell to my knees, the silver salve Sofia had applied now feeling like mockery against the renewed agony of the shackles. I could still taste her on my lips. I could still feel the phantom heat of her body.
"Sofia," I whispered into the dirt.
But the only answer was the distant, tolling bell of the Cathedral, announcing the dawn of the wedding day.
The choice had been made. And as I heard the heavy, rhythmic thud of the executioner’s boots approaching my cell, I realized that I wasn't the only one who was going to bleed before the sun set.
Dante was marrying a ghost. And I was about to become one.
