Chapter 47 - The person in the doorway
~Author’s POV~

“Wha–” she started, but was cut off by the hand that came to cover her mouth in the next second. With one hard jab of her elbow, she struck the person, hearing a groan erupt from his lips, but still, he didn't let her go.

It wasn't until that familiar Sandalwood smell hit her nostrils that she mellowed.

Rael put the woman down, watching as she turned to finally face him. There was a hint of surprise in her eyes once she realized who it was.

Harriet, who had not expected the man to be here, felt her heart stop. He'd seen her sliding off a two-story building in the middle of the night. She expected him to ask, but he calmly stared at her in the night, his eyes clear.

“Let's go,” came his voice, and she nodded, following the man out of the woods. It turned out that the warehouse was located in an uncommon neighborhood in the city. She couldn't help but shiver. She couldn't tell if they wanted her dead or something else.

After getting to the main road, Rael pulled open the door for her to get in just as Kai rushed towards them.

“Sir, their leader got away, and his subordinates…” he trailed, his eyes darting to Harriet who was about to enter the car.

Sensing Kai's hesitation, Harriet got into the car.

“Report everything to me later,” Rael said, hopping into the car beside Harriet.

“Drive,” he said to the chauffeur who nodded before starting the car and driving off. And just like that, the car whisked away to the hospital. It didn't take long for them to arrive, and just as Harriet stepped out, she was swept off her feet.

“Ah! What are you doing?”

“Taking you to the hospital,” Rael replied curtly, making her bite her lip.

“But my legs work perfectly,” she muttered, not expecting him to glare at her sharply. She wanted to say that she only had a swelling face and nothing serious, yet when she glanced at the man's death stare, she chose to shut up.

The nurses cast them glances as they walked along the hallway, making Harriet's face flush in embarrassment, making her look like a tomato.

“He's so handsome! And he even treats his girlfriend well!”

“She can't be his girlfriend, to me, she looks like a college student,” a few nurses muttered across themselves, but Harriet had caught them clearly. She raised her head to stare at the man's features while her arms remained wrapped around his neck. Looking at him up close, she sided with the nurses. He was indeed handsome.

And just like last time they were at the hospital, Rael kicked a door open, revealing Elvis, who was attending to a patient. When the latter saw this, he quickly finished what he was doing and discharged the patient before finally turning to them.

“You two are here again?” He asked, frustration evident in his voice, yet when Rael glared at him, he quickly swallowed his remaining words.

“Check her,” Rael's voice came, making Elvis smile.

“Yes, yes. But first put her down, she isn't running away after all,” He pointed out, making Harriet blush even more. Why did every one of Rael's friends feel weirder than the last?

After Rael put her down, she quickly escaped to get her wounds checked.

“We might need to do an X-ray to check for broken bones. You don't mind, do you?” Elvis asked, turning to Rael who just gave a look that said “do what you have to do or you're dead,”

A nervous chuckle escaped his lips as he shivered, immediately pulling Harriet to take an X-ray. Why did Rael have to be so scary?

When the results came out, Elvis revealed that Harriet's shoulder was a bit dislocated from the fall, making her helpless. He cleaned and tended to the wounds on her wrists after. In the end, Rael had asked for a hospital room for her.

“I don't want to stay at the hospital. It's so boring,” she whined, but the man had not even paid attention to her, only making arrangements. In the end, she found herself in a hospital bed.

“You won't be going to school tomorrow,” Rael calmly stated, getting off his phone as he walked over to her bed.

“Tsk! You're so overbearing!” She half-yelled, not knowing whether to cry or laugh, but still, it still warmed her heart a bit. Never had her own father ever cared if she got hurt.

Just as she was about to say something more, the door opened with a click, and Kai walked in. His eyes looked grave, and his aura dark. Harriet shivered. Her suspicions couldn't be wrong with this man, he was an assassin.

“Sir, Miss Delphine has also been admitted to the hospital and asked if you could visit her,” Kai announced, making Harriet stiffen. Delphine? Wasn't it the woman who she had met at the boutique once? Rael's childhood friend?

She suddenly felt something tug at her heart, yet she quickly pushed it aside.

“I'll be back. Be good," came Rael's voice, but she knew it was probably a warning. She shivered as he patted her head before watching him leave.

Once the door closed, she sighed, slumping onto the bed.

“Ah!” She cried out, her dislocated shoulder more painful than it had been. Why did it hurt only when Elvis pointed it out? She could only groan in frustration, before picking up her phone to play.

Seconds passed, and then minutes, but Rael had still not returned. Harriet had gotten bored of playing, her eyes glued directly to the door. Was he not going to return tonight?

She heaved a deep, rejected sigh before picking herself from the bed and heading to the bathroom. She had just finished peeing and wanted to pull her panties up when the door burst open.

“Ah! Don't you know how to knock?” She yelled, her remaining words getting stuck in her throat once she saw the person in the doorway.
