At his door I knock before stepping back. I pull at the hem of my t-shirt and part of me thinks I should've looked nicer. Oh well. I'm most comfortable in a t-shirt and jeans anyway. Anthony's face greets me once the door opens. "Hey, Lace. Come in." Inside I can smell food. Anthony shuts the door behind me and I hear laughter coming from the kitchen. I move through the living room, which is just a black couch, a TV stand, and a TV on top. I follow Anthony into the dining area where Olivia is sitting at a small table. She has a grilled cheese in front of her while Dylan is sitting next to her, dressed down in gray sweats and a black t-shirt. "My Lacey is here," Anthony calls out. Olivia's curly brown hair bounces as she runs from the table and into my legs. "My Lacey!" she exclaims. She'd given me the nickname the last time I visited and Anthony always had her call me that. I lean down and pick her up, even though she's probably way too old for it. I hug her tightly. "How's my Olive?" She starts speaking really quickly, and she rubs her hands together as she says it, but I think she's said that she's eating a grilled cheese. "Dylan made it for me," she says, smiling. I glance at Dylan, who's standing up from his spot. "He did?" "I make the best grilled cheese," he says, giving me an arrogant smirk. "Clearly," I tease. I place Olivia back down. "I brought you a birthday present." I hand her the box, and her arms wrap around it tightly. "Open it, bug," Anthony encourages her as she sets the box on the ground. I help her open the cardboard box and together we pull out the instruments. She gasps when she sees it all and she hugs me. Anthony kneels next to her. "Say thank you, bug." She thanks me and starts banging on the xylophone immediately. Anthony gives me a deadpan look. "You must really hate me." The loud noise of the xylophone fills the apartment and even Dylan cringes from the sounds. "Okay, go eat before your dad gets mad," I tell Olivia. She runs back to her spot and starts biting into the grilled cheese like a mad person, all while laughing. I turn to Anthony for answers and he only sighs. "She had pancakes for breakfast and Dylan let her have candy a while ago." "In my defense, she asked nicely for the candy," Dylan says quickly. It's cute to see Dylan's soft side with Olivia. Hell, even Anthony's soft side came out once she was born. She became Anthony's entire world. We sit with Olivia as she finishes her grilled cheese. Once she's finished, she runs to her room and starts to sing. "I'm getting ready to put her into pre-school," Anthony says, rubbing his temples. "I just don't know how she'll do." "I'm sure she'll be fine. She seems like a real social butterfly," I tell him. She'll probably make friends right away. "That's what my mom says. I don't know," he says. Dylan looks at me and smirks. "I think we should be worried about how you'll do, not her." Anthony probably isn't ready for her to grow up so fast. She's already four years old and I can't believe it. It seems like time goes by faster when someone has a kid around. Watching them grow is actually insane. Anthony shoves Dylan's shoulder. "Shut it. We'll talk when you have a kid." My phone starts to vibrate in my pocket. Ben's name flashes on the screen and I hesitate. If I blow him off, I might feel guilty about it later. But I also don't want to be on the phone the whole time I'm here. Maybe I can make it a quick call. "Let me answer this real quick," I tell Anthony and Dylan. I quickly stand up and head into the living room where I can talk. "Hello?" I answer. "Hey, how's the trip?" Ben asks. He's so casual about it, but sincere. I don't know if I should be worried, or happy. "It's great. I'm just visiting with some friends before I hit the road." "Oh, cool. I won't keep you long then. I was just wondering if you wanted to grab dinner later." What I like the most about Ben is he isn't bullshitting me, and it's clear now. Instead of texting me about it, or being vague, he decided to call me. "That sounds great. Where do you want to meet?" "Actually I was thinking I could pick you up from your place," he says. "Like a date?" I blurt out. I hope he doesn't take it the wrong way. "It doesn't have to be a date. We can just meet up somewhere if you're more comfortable with that," he says it quickly and I feel bad for making him second guess it. I gotta be honest. "No, no, you can pick me up. We just haven't been on a real date yet." "It's a date then," his tone changes, sounding more confident. "How's six o'clock for you?" "Six is perfect. I'll see you then," I say. We hang up and a smile slips onto my face. Ben and I are going on a real date instead of hooking up. This seems like a breakthrough until I turn around and see Dylan and Anthony at the table, quietly talking. My attention lingers on Dylan. There's a sudden sense of guilt and I shouldn't feel this way. I shouldn't feel guilty for wanting to see someone else, but the feeling remains.
