Chapter 172 : Kill Himself 1
Chapter 172 : Kill Himself 1
Rayline.
My head was pounding, and everything hurt so much. It was still pitch black, like it was early morning. The only thing I could see was the moonlight coming through the crack in the balcony door. My body feels chilled, and with great effort, I turn onto my side, but my heart sinks when I find that Cole is no longer there.
Nausea started to wash over me, the whole thing seemed to be spinning around, and I could barely move. My lungs felt more and more tight. I shifted my gaze over to the nightstand and frowned when I spotted a note with my name on it.
Somehow, I found enough energy to sit up and lean against the bed frame to grab it. The paper looked crumpled and folded at the edges. I slowly unfold it to see that Cole's handwriting is messy and full of scribbles.
I started reading from the top, carefully skimming over what he might want to leave me.
"Dear Rayline,
I'm sorry. I won't be able to keep some of our promises. I promised I would never leave you no matter what, but I guess there was no other way to protect you."
The handwriting became smudged and scribbled as it went on to say, "I don't know what else to do. I wish there was another way."
I frowned as I continued reading the writing.
"If you die because of me, I don't think I will be able to live with myself. You have never shown me anything but love and acceptance since the first day we met. You never judged me for what I was, and I will never be able to show you how much happiness you have given me.
This is my fault. I should have been here to protect you, and you suffered for it. If you had not killed me, you would have died. So if I am out of the picture, you will be able to live."
As my eyes scrolled down, my heart seemed to stop beating.
"I don't want to leave you. I never will. I'm going to fix this. Please, whatever happens after this, don't ever think that you have to die for me, and don't ever blame yourself. Please live... for both of us."
My jaw dropped open as my chest grew heaved, and by the end, I could barely read the words as the tears that began to flow blinded my vision.
"When that day comes where we can meet again, I hope you will come and find me... and forgive me.
I love you.
Yours forever, C.S."
"No," I whispered softly as my eyes darted around. I crumpled the paper into a ball and dropped it on the floor as I tried to move. But the rune marks were still on me, so I turned to my cell phone and clicked Cole's number. The phone rang a few times, but then it went to voicemail. "No." I tried again, and the same thing happened, my hands shaking.
In frustration, I threw my phone on the pillow, and I looked down at my jacket at the end of the bed. My body ached as I grabbed it and put it on my shoulders, making me cry out in despair, but I forced myself to endure the pain.
Tears streamed down the side of my face as I shoved aside the blanket and got to my feet, but as soon as my feet touched the floor, they suddenly felt as limp as jelly. My body collapsed with a screech, making a thud echo throughout the house, but I still tried to move. I crawled to the front when I saw my open bag, then forced my body to reach out for it, even though my body was telling me to stop.
Rummaging through all my things, I got rid of all the small items before turning the bag upside down and throwing everything on the floor. In a state of panic, I checked all the items, and my stomach felt a twinge when I saw an empty hilt, which meant my fears were right.
"Oh no." I bring my hand to my mouth while shaking my head, and turn toward the door as I try to get to my feet. "Cole."
Out of the blue, the door opened, and my mom looked down as I sobbed through the pain.
"Rayline!" She instantly knelt by my side. "What are you doing? Why are you awake?" I only shook my head frantically as I kept crying, and tried to push her away. "Rayline, what's wrong with you?" She then put her hand on my forehead and gasped. "You are catching a fever. You need to get into bed."
"No." I shook my head again, as the tears flowed freely. "No, I can't. I have to find Cole."
"Cole?" She frowned, utterly bewildered. "Honey, what are you talking about?"
"Mom, I have to find him. I have to stop him!" I sobbed as I tried to get past her, but she held back, making me squirm angrily. "No, I have to find him, please, Mom!"
"You are sick, Rayline. You must be having nightmares."
"No! He's out there! I have to stop him!" I insisted, pushing her away again.
She quickly jumped to her feet and rushed down the hallway. I heard screaming, while trying to get my body to cooperate. Within seconds, my mom returned, followed by my dad.
"She was hysterical. I don't know what to do," my mom said, gesturing to me. My dad knelt down to put his arm around me, and I pushed him away again.
"No, I have to find Cole."
"Sweetie, he is not here," my dad cooed.
"I know!" I screamed. "I have to find him," I cried even louder. "Please, I have to find him." I looked up at my parents as tears blinded my vision.
"Come on, Rayline." My dad tried to grab me again, and I struggled.
"NO!" I yelled. "I have to stop him. Dad, please, help me find him!" I punched and pushed him until he finally let go, and I caught myself with both hands.
"Ray, you can call him, he's fine." My mom tried to touch my arm.
"No," I said, shaking my head. "He won't answer, I have to stop him."
She knelt down and ran her hand down my back. "Okay," she nodded and glanced at my dad. "Is there anyone else to contact?"
Taking a deep breath, my mind raced as I battled the searing pain in my chest, but I nodded as I choked back tears. My mom went to the bed to get my cell phone, and halfway through, my dad frowned, but my mom just shook her head. She opened the phone and was back by my side in an instant.
"Who do you want to call, sweetie?" she asked softly.
Trying to calm myself down, I sucked in a deep breath. "J-Jesse." I looked up at her with wet eyes. "Call Jesse."
"Okay," she nodded and searched for the name, before pressing it.
Then she handed me the phone, and I snatched it quickly and placed it to my ear. While trying to stay upright, I leaned my body against the bed, while the phone buzzed, my heart praying.
"Hey Ray, I was just about to call you, we found—"
"Jesse," I whined, and he stopped, instantly hearing the panic in my tone, and both of my parents watched skeptically. "It's Jesse," I said through tears. "Cole, he-he is..."
"Ray." My mom tugged on my shoulder, but I brushed her off.
"What? Ray, what's wrong?" Jesse's voice instantly became worried.
"I don't know where he is. He left and he..." I shot a quick glance at my parents, but I had no time to try to lie. "Jesse, he is going to kill himself."
"What?" His voice went numb. "Ray—"
"He said he would do it to save me," I sobbed. "He would kill himself so the runes would not kill me." I could barely speak. "Jesse, he is going to die."
There was a pause on the other end before I heard Jesse shouting out for Taylor.
"Don't worry, Ray, we will look for him, okay?" He assured me, and I just nodded through tears, but I could not hold back the tears. "We will find him, don't worry."
"Please, Jesse... I—" I turned around and saw my parents looking at me with concern. "I can't lose him."
"We will find him."
"...Okay," I said with a choked sob. After that, I pulled back my phone and ended the call, and my hands fell into my lap as I squeezed my eyes shut.
"Ray?" I felt a touch on my arm and saw my mom looking at me.
"Mom," I hugged her tightly and cried.
Her hands rubbed my back gently, but as her head turned toward my father, I heard her whisper, "Call an ambulance."
Suddenly, I felt a pulse shoot through my body, and I could not move. I stopped crying, I stopped struggling to move. I could not feel anything. My body went numb. My vision became blurry, and all sounds began to be muffled, and began to fade away.
"Come to me," the whisper sounded fuzzy in my ears.
