Chapter 29: When The Bad Guy Finds Love.
Chapter 29: When The Bad Guy Finds Love.
Jade's POV
The blue-and-red flash bathed the dark road in nervous light.
I froze when the police officer’s flashlight swept through my window.“Can you step out with your license, ma’am?”
I swallowed hard. My hands trembled on the door handle before I pushed it open, forcing out the calmest smile I could find.
“Yes, officer,” I said, my voice calm but my stomach was chaos.
He scanned my face, then tilted the beam toward the car. “Who’s in there?”
“My boyfriend,” I replied smoothly, praying my pulse didn’t betray me. “He’s not feeling well. We just left the hospital.”
The man nodded slowly, eyes still trained on Eros sitting perfectly still in the passenger seat.
His eyes glowed faintly from the dashboard’s reflection.“Can he step out too?” the officer asked.
“Oh, he’s… weak. Night cold. The doctor said rest.” I tried to sound tired but normal, the kind of tired people have after a hospital run.
The officer hummed, nodding. He looked through my license, glanced at the car papers, then offered a small smile. “Alright, ma’am. You can have a safe drive home.”
I exhaled quietly, relief spilling through my chest. “Thank you, officer.”
I turned to leave...
“Hold on,” he said sharply.
The flashlight froze on my shoe.
My world tilted when I followed his beam...blood. A dark stain dried over the white leather of my sneakers.
“Ma’am…” He squatted a little. “That looks like blood.”
“Oh...uh...uhm,” I stammered, “I… must have stepped on something earlier.”
He wasn’t convinced. His light trailed from the ground toward the car trunk.
“Sir...” I started, but Eros’ voice cut through the night.
“I had an accident alongside cold,” he said, his tone robotic but almost human. His hand lifted, wrapped in a torn cloth like a bandage.
The officer blinked, confused. “You… what?”
“Accident. Alongside cold. My companion aided recovery,” Eros continued. His face was blank, voice too calm.
I gulped.
How the hell did he come up with that?
The officer nodded slowly, though suspicion still painted his features.
“Alright,” he said. “But that’s a lot of blood for a small accident.” He moved closer, shining the torch under the car. “Must be a deep cut.”
The beam traveled down to the car’s rear bumper.
Shit. He started walking toward the back.
“Sir, please,” I rushed forward, stepping between him and the car. “You don’t need to....”
“Ma’am, step aside,” he said, his tone suddenly firm.
“It’s just... it opens from the front,” I lied quickly, heart beating too fast. “I’ll get it for you.”
“Alright then. Go open it.”
I turned back toward Eros. My voice dropped to a whisper.“We’re cooked.”
Eros tilted his head slightly. “Is he a threat?”
I stared at him. One cop. Dark road. No cameras.
My heart drummed painfully.“Sometimes,” I breathed out, “you have to be the bad guy.”
His eyes flickered blue. “Affirmative.”
I turned back toward the officer, forcing a small smile.“You really don’t want to open that, officer. I promise.”
He frowned. “Are you telling me how to do my job, ma’am?”
“Not at all,” I said, raising my hands. “I’m just saying...”
Before I could finish, Eros moved.
A blur of metal, muscle, and speed. He grabbed the officer’s arm, twisted it in a blink, and slammed him into the ground.
The man gasped, struggling, flashlight flying out of his hand.
“Eros! Wait...” I said as he looked up at me, eyes pulsing neon-blue. “Do I make him kneel?”
I froze for half a second, adrenaline spilling through my veins. “Do it,” I muttered before I could stop myself. “I want to see an officer kneel.”
Eros’ mouth curved slightly. “Anything for you, Jady sexy.”
He kicked the man behind the knees; the officer collapsed, groaning in pain. Another blow. Then another. The sound of knuckles against flesh echoed through the empty highway.
“Stop! Stop!” I shouted finally, yanking at his arm. “Eros, we have to go before someone else comes!”
He didn’t answer.
Instead, he lifted the man by the neck, his grip tightening, until the officer’s body started twitching.
“Eros!” I screamed. “Let him go!”
He froze, then released him. The man crumpled to the ground, gasping for breath.
Eros looked at me blankly. “He is not dead. I gave his brain a shock. He will not remember.”
I blinked in disbelief. “A shock?”
“For safety reasons,” he said flatly.
I stared at him, then at the unconscious officer. “Damn,” I said, almost laughing. “You’re smart, man, where the hell did you get that bandage story from?”
He turned his head slightly, eyes glowing faintly in the dim dashboard light. “I had to make it convincing,” he said in that flat, robotic tone that somehow still made her heart twitch.
“Convincing?” she repeated. “You even wrapped your hand like you’ve been through a war. How’d you pull that off?”
“I made a laceration,” he said simply.
Jade blinked, her knuckles tightening on the wheel. “You what?”
“I cut my hand with the knife from your dashboard compartment,” he explained like it was no big deal. “It increased the realism of my claim.”
For a second, she stared at him in pure disbelief...then burst into laughter. “Eros, that wasn’t a knife!” she said, shaking her head. “That was my hairpin. You cut yourself with a damn hairpin!”
He blinked, processing. “Sharpness sufficient for deception,” he said proudly.
Jade wiped a tear of laughter from her cheek. “You’re insane,” she whispered.
“I am adaptive,” he corrected softly.
He tilted his head. "Affirmative.”
I shook my head and slid into the driver’s seat. “Get in, before Jackie Chan wakes up.”
He obeyed, climbing into the passenger seat.
The silence broke when I played a song...'After Dark’ by Mr. Kitty.
🎵 I see you, you see me...
How pleasant this feeling ..
The moment you hold me... 🎵
Eros tilted his head to the rhythm, trying to mouth the lyrics.“Hold me,” he said, repeating after the song.
“Yeah,” I laughed breathlessly. “Sing it, champ!”
He sang off-key, broken, but damn if it wasn’t adorable.
By the time we reached home, my stomach hurt from laughing. We threw ourselves onto the couch, both breathless.
“Yo, you actually went full Kung Fu on that man,” I said between giggles.
He smiled faintly. “I protect you.”
“Yeah, yeah,” I said, smirking. “You also almost gave me a heart attack."
He leaned closer. “Heart rate stable now?”
I laughed again, softer this time. The laughter melted into silence.
He reached out, his hand brushing my cheek. Then, slowly, he tugged a strand of hair behind my ear.
My chest tightened. His touch was… warm.
He leaned forward and kissed my forehead gently. When he pulled back, I rested my head against his chest.
And then...
I froze.
I heard it.
A soft thump-thump… thump-thump.
I looked up at him, my voice trembling.“Your chest… your heart is beating fast.”
He looked down at me, his expression unreadable.“I am built for you,” he said.
For a moment, I couldn’t move.
His eyes flickered between blue and gold, and I swore I saw something human slip through.
My breath caught, and before I could think...everything around us went dark..
