Chapter 304 Explain It to My Wife
Chapter 304 Explain It to My Wife
The next day.
Nora was woken up by a phone ringing.
She was sleeping on the side near the nightstand. Opening her eyes, she glanced over—it was Steven's phone.
The name "Scarlett" was flashing on the screen.
Nora couldn't be bothered. She pretended not to see it and closed her eyes again.
But it was really annoying. The phone rang over and over again. Scarlett was like a cockroach that wouldn't die.
Nora was fed up. She reached out and pushed Steven's shoulder. "Steven, Scarlett's calling."
Steven opened his eyes groggily. Seeing her clean face against the pillow, he reached out and pulled her into his arms.
Nora's breath caught. She patted the back of his hand. "Scarlett's calling you."
"You answer it for me." His tone was casual.
"Why should I answer it for you? I don't want to." She refused, sitting up. She was wearing a silk nightgown.
"You're my wife. Isn't it normal for you to answer my phone?" Steven answered the call and held it to her ear.
Nora fell silent. Who does this?
"Hello, Steven, my test results came out today. Do you want to come over?" Scarlett's voice sounded pleasant over the phone.
Nora frowned and took the phone, running her hand through her smooth long hair. "It's me."
The smile on Scarlett's face froze instantly. "Why is it you? Where's Steven?"
"He told me to answer the phone."
"Then give him the phone. I need to talk to him."
Nora glanced at Steven. He had his arm around her waist, his handsome face beneath his short hair looking slightly annoyed.
He always hated being disturbed early in the morning.
"Scarlett wants you to take the call." Nora said helplessly. She really didn't want to be their messenger.
"Put it on speaker." Steven instructed her.
"Okay." Nora did as told.
On the other end, Scarlett listened to them talking, her expression darkening.
"Scarlett." Steven's usual calm voice came through the phone. "Do we have any intimate relationship?"
"What?" Scarlett was stunned for a moment, not understanding. "Why are you asking that?"
"My wife is right here. I hope you can explain to her what our relationship is." Steven said with his eyes closed.
Nora frowned and looked at him. His face with its clear features showed no expression, as if he were asking about the weather.
Last night she'd told him not to say anything, but he still had to ask.
Scarlett went silent for a moment, as if she hadn't expected Steven to say this.
Nora didn't know why, but suddenly she felt a bit satisfied.
Like the satisfaction of getting revenge.
"Did Nora misunderstand us?" After a while, Scarlett's voice came through, having already hidden her jealousy.
Steven gave a light "yes" and said, "Explain it to her."
Scarlett really wanted to laugh.
Steven was actually asking her to explain to Nora?
Who did Nora think she was?
Scarlett's hand gripped the blanket slightly as she asked softly, "Nora, are you there?"
Nora didn't want to deal with her. Steven said, "She's in bed with me."
Nora fell silent.
Scarlett's face was already twisted with anger. After a moment, she said gently, "Nora? Are you mad at Steven and me?"
Scarlett sounded very guilty. "I made you two fight, didn't I?"
Nora thought: You know exactly what you're doing.
Steven still had his arm around her. Nora didn't want him holding her and tried to push him away, but no matter what she did, she couldn't succeed. Her waist was locked tightly in his grip.
Nora was really getting frustrated.
"I'm sorry, Nora, it's my fault. Steven only helped me with things because Theo didn't come to the hospital. Steven really likes you. I hope you won't hold it against him. Please talk things out and don't fight anymore..." Scarlett explained gently.
Nora thought: This sounds like playing the innocent victim.
"Did you hear that?" Steven looked at Nora.
Nora pressed her lips together. So Steven really couldn't tell when someone was playing innocent?
"Nora, please forgive Steven. He's really good, really good... It's my fault. I got sick, which made you two fight..." Scarlett apologized, her voice breaking.
With words like these, what man wouldn't feel sorry for her?
Nora finally understood Scarlett's tactics.
Sweet and proper in front of others.
Sneaky and cunning behind their backs.
This was what made Nora most desperate—because Scarlett was too smart. She didn't openly declare she wanted to be with Steven.
As a friend, she openly took up Steven's time, making him take care of her, and he couldn't refuse.
After all, everyone would feel sorry for someone who was dying.
She was very good at using her illness to get what she wanted.
And Nora couldn't even be jealous. She couldn't even call Scarlett a mistress, because Scarlett never showed any intention of being with Steven.
Steven finding doctors for a friend he'd known for over ten years—no matter how you looked at it, it was a positive story.
So Nora became the jealous woman instead.
And she had no choice but to go along with Scarlett's words. Otherwise, Scarlett would pull the move of "feeling so guilty about causing a fight between husband and wife" that it triggered her heart condition.
If that accusation landed, wouldn't Nora become the guilty party?
So Nora still didn't speak, because the more she said, the more mistakes she'd make.
Steven asked her, "Why aren't you saying anything?"
"I don't want to talk to her." Nora told the truth.
Scarlett narrowed her eyes.
She'd actually become this guarded?
The next second, a caregiver's voice came through the phone. "Ms. Lewis, Ms. Lewis... Mr. York, Ms. Lewis's blood oxygen suddenly dropped. She seems to be in a lot of pain."
Nora's eyes went cold.
As expected, here it comes!
Using the heart condition trigger move, just as predicted!
"Did you call the doctor?" Steven took the phone, his voice deep.
The caregiver said, "Yes, but Ms. Lewis seems like she can't breathe. Her face has gone very pale. Mr. York, can you come over?"
Steven fell silent, glancing at Nora.
"If you want to go, then go. You've been friends for over ten years. I won't interfere with this." Nora said as she got out of bed to find clothes.
Steven's expression was somewhat complicated. "Should we go together?"
Nora shook her head. "You go by yourself. I need to make pastries today. I have things to do."
Going to the hospital—who knows what other tricks were waiting there.
Better to stay safe and not go.
Steven stared at her back for a while, then got up and hugged her from behind. "If you're unhappy, tell me."
"I know."
That morning, Nora made pastries at home. After several failed attempts, she finally made chestnut brownies that satisfied her, both in taste and appearance.
Nora packed the finished pastries into boxes, planning to call a delivery person to send them to the Bennett family.
Just then, the doorbell rang.
Nora opened the door.
Outside stood a female assistant in a suit. "Hello, Mrs. Nora York."
Nora remembered her. She was the secretary who worked for Electra, named Lyra Cole.
"Mrs. Electra York sent me." Lyra was carrying many gifts.
Nora frowned. "What did Electra send you here for?"
"After you left the estate that day, Mrs. Elizabeth York got very angry. She scolded everyone, saying Mr. York shouldn't have punished you." Lyra said, handing over the gifts. "Mrs. Nora York, these are from Mrs. Electra York."
She walked in and placed the items in the living room.
Nora watched her quietly, waiting for her to state her purpose.
"Mrs. Nora York, I'm here today to relay Mrs. Electra York's message."
Lyra said politely, "Mrs. Electra York said that when Mr. Steven York broke off his engagement with Ms. Bennett from the Bennett family, it didn't look very good on the surface. She wants you to go to the Bennett family to apologize. I'll show you the way."
Nora didn't say anything.
Seeing her silence, Lyra continued, "After all, the two families had a good relationship originally, but because of the broken engagement, they've been at odds in the stock market. Mrs. Electra York's intention is to hope for reconciliation, so everyone can get along peacefully in the future."
Nora looked up at Lyra. "Electra wants me to go to the Bennett family and apologize to Mrs. Bennett?"
"Yes."
Nora thought for a moment and agreed. "Alright then."
Nora was planning to bring the chestnut brownies over anyway.
She hadn't expected Nora to agree.
Lyra felt relieved. Today, Mrs. Electra York had indeed sent her, but Jada had other ideas. She told her to make sure Nora went to the Bennett family no matter what.
Jada had already notified Vivian, telling her that Nora would be going to the Bennett family today.
The two had bad blood. Jada hoped Vivian would teach Nora a lesson.
On the way, the driver drove.
Lyra handed Nora the gifts for the Bennett family. "Mrs. York, these gifts are all for the Bennett family."
They were all expensive supplements.
It seemed the York family really valued their relationship with the Bennett family.
But there was one box of desserts that Nora found a bit strange.
"This is also a gift for the Bennett family?" Nora turned to ask Lyra.
Lyra said, "This is for Mrs. Bennett. I heard she likes desserts. When you see Mrs. Bennett later, give it to her personally, Mrs. York. She'll definitely be very happy. I heard she has a very good temper."
Nora thought of Aria's face. She did have a good temper.
But the dessert Lyra wanted to give Aria contained peanuts.
Just yesterday, Louis had reminded her that Aria was allergic to peanuts.
The dessert box had a swan printed on it—it was from a very expensive brand.
Nora didn't say anything.
Lyra quietly breathed a sigh of relief. The dessert was secretly added by Jada, for Nora to give to Mrs. Bennett to ruin this apology. Then Mr. Doyle York would get angry again.
When they arrived at the Bennett family home, Nora didn't take that box of desserts. Instead, she got out of the car with her own brownies.
"Mrs. York, you forgot to take the dessert." Lyra followed with the gifts and dessert.
"No need. I prepared my own dessert for Mrs. Bennett." Nora gave Lyra a cool look.
Lyra's heart skipped a beat. She frowned. "How can what Mrs. York prepared work? Such cheap dessert—how could it match Mrs. Bennett's status?"
"Mrs. Bennett isn't that kind of person." Nora replied graciously.
Lyra's expression stiffened, looking a bit unhappy. "Mrs. York, these gifts were carefully prepared by the family. How can you look down on them?"
Nora ignored her and walked straight ahead.
She wasn't planning to keep in touch with the York family anyway. No need to pretend to be friendly.
