Chapter 25: The Edge of Control

Ben woke up before dawn, the morning still dark. His body hurt from exercising the day before. All of his muscles creaked, informing him of how much he had strained, but beneath the fatigue, another feeling churned—power. It ran through his veins, no longer potential, no longer dormant.

He reclined back, taking deep breaths. He was changing. He knew it.

The cabin was quiet, save for the faint sound of the wind stirring the trees outside. He wasn’t surprised when the door creaked open and Lilith stepped in, her sharp silver eyes settling on him immediately.

“You’re up early,” she noted.

Ben swung his legs over the side of the cot, stretching. “Couldn’t sleep.”

She studied him for a moment, then nodded toward the door. “Good. Let’s go.”

The training yards were otherwise early in the morning. The mist had not yet burned off, so the atmosphere was water-rich. The dirt under Ben's bare feet chilled and damped him, earthy. Kieran and Cyrus were already upright, their masks impassive.

Lilith didn't so much as take a breath before she spoke. "Today, we shatter your limits."

Ben had counted on that. What he had not counted on was how exactly she planned on doing it.

Kieran moved forward, relaxing but eyes watchful. "You've sparred with Lilith up until now, but that won't cut it. You'll have to spar with us."

Ben blinked. "Both of you?"

Cyrus cracked his knuckles, smiling. "Think of it as an initiation."

Ben's heart was racing. He'd only just managed to hold Lilith off. Now he was going to fight two veterans?

Lilith would have noticed the doubt in his face because she tilted her head to one side. "You're stronger than you believe. Stop doubting."

Ben inhaled deeply, pushing his doubt behind him. He squared his shoulders. "Fine. Let's do this."

Cyrus grinned even wider. "That's the plan."

And they went on.

Ben barely had a moment to respond. Kieran struck first, his sword glinting as he sliced at Ben's side. Ben wheeled away just in time, but before he could respond, Cyrus was on him—fast, ruthless. He kicked at Ben's legs, and they slid out from under him.

Ben fell to the ground with a crash, the jolt of the fall knocking the air from his lungs.

Cyrus tutted. "Too slow."

Ben clamped his jaws together, rotating back onto his feet. Energy inside him brewed furiously, to be let out. He gasped and focused sharply.

The second strike came earlier. Kieran moved smoothly forward, faking left then turning into the real strike. Ben dodged it by inches, his response that much faster, more reflexive now. He saw Cyrus before he ever sensed him, dodging a strike that would have folded him into his face.

His shape moved of its own accord, driven by something greater than mind. He twisted, releasing his power—

A burst of shockwave came out of his core, stronger than last time. The ground beneath him trembled as the energy hurled Kieran and Cyrus back.

Ben took a deep breath, trembling hands from the energy release. He had felt it this time, contained it stronger than last.

Kieran shook off his jacket. "Not bad."

Cyrus grinned. "I felt that one."

But they weren't done yet.

Kieran struck again, faster. Ben's reflexes screamed in his head, and this time took the blow face-on. They collided, electricity crackling between them. Ben dodged, parried, battled.

For the first time in his life, he wasn't battling in the dark. He was winning.

Cyrus charged, but Ben waited. He turned in the last second, presenting Cyrus with his back before he drove his elbow into Cyrus's ribs. Cyrus doubled over and retreated. Kieran swung at Ben's side, but Ben did not wait—let the power out of him.

A contained blast sent Kieran crashing to the ground.

There was nothing.

Ben stood in the center of the clearing, his chest rising and falling, his hands still humming with raw energy. He had done it. He had won.

Lilith nodded, satisfaction flickering in her gaze. “You’re getting there.”

Ben exhaled, his heart still pounding. He wasn’t just surviving anymore.

He was becoming something else.

Something unstoppable.

Ben lingered in the clearing, last energy fading off him, corporeal reminders of the strength that he had spent. The hush was thick, punctured only by rasp of his breathing. He eyed Kieran and Cyrus, who stood with stunned faces of wonder and respect.

He had won. Not just survived, but truly won. The realization sent a surge of exhilaration through him, a feeling he had never known. He had always been the one reacting, the one being controlled. But now, everything had changed.

Lilith stepped forward, her silver eyes gleaming with satisfaction. “You’ve finally stopped doubting yourself.”

Ben nodded, his gaze scanning the clearing. The fog was lifting, revealing the dripping leaves and pale illumination of morning sun. A new day, a new start.

"What now?" he panted.

Lilith's lips lifted in a small smile. "Now, we hone."

The following days were a blur of intense training. Lilith pushed him harder than he ever had been pushed before, demanding control and precision. She taught him how to contain his power, how to integrate it with his movements, how to use it as an extension of himself. Kieran and Cyrus continued to challenge him, forcing him to think on his feet.

Ben worked to anticipate their assault, anticipating before they could, seeing before they saw. He honed his control over his shockwaves, accurate in application. He worked on speed and agility, fast as a phantom, irrepressible.

He studied his heritage, as well. Lilith taught him about his ancestors, the old wolves who roamed the land eons past, fierce and untamed. She taught him of their connection to the earth, of their ability to summon the elements, of their freedom.

"They were hunted because they could not be dominated," she told him, her voice gentle with pride. "They were a threat to the rule that was."

Ben listened, his feeling of belonging he never knew expanding his chest. He belonged. He was a generation of the wild, the indomitable.

Later in the night, the sun dipping below the horizon and casting long shadows over the training grounds, Lilith summoned him.

"It's time," she said to him, her voice stern.

Ben's heart was pounding. "Time for what?"

"Time to unleash your full potential."

She led him to a secluded part of the forest, a clearing ringed by towering trees. In the center of the clearing was a huge, ancient stone.

"This stone," she explained, "is an amplifier. It's a focus of the energy of individuals who lay their hand on it."

Ben looked at the stone, the surface of which was smooth and cold. "What am I supposed to do?"

"Channel your power. Let it flow through you, into the stone."

Ben hesitated. He had never tried to channel his power in such a concentrated way. What if he lost control?

Lilith placed a hand on his shoulder. “Trust yourself, Ben. You’re ready.”
