Chapter 53 Chapter 53 — It Didn’t End in There

The room empties in pieces, not all at once, not with any urgency, just people standing, gathering their things, voices rising slightly as the structure dissolves into something more ordinary.
It doesn’t feel ordinary, not after that. I stay seated for a second longer than I need to, letting the movement happen around me instead of stepping into it immediately, the bench still solid beneath me, grounding in a way the rest of the room isn’t.
Josh stands first. Mike follows. Jake shifts behind me. Drew’s hand brushes mine once before he straightens.
Patrick rises last.
“Let’s go,” he says, low and even.
No one argues. We move together, controlled and deliberate, the space parting without resistance as we step back into the hallway. The air feels looser out here. But not better.
Mike slows just enough to fall in beside Josh, his voice quiet. “He didn’t push.”
Josh’s jaw tightens slightly. “He didn’t need to.”
Jake exhales under his breath. “That wasn’t nothing.”
“No,” Patrick says. “It wasn’t.”
We keep moving.
No one looks back.
The doors open before we reach them, and the outside air hits sharper this time, cooler against my skin as we step out.
For a second, it’s just that.
Light.
Air.
Space.
Then it settles.
Mike stops.
Not fully.
Just enough.
His gaze shifts across the street.
“That’s it.”
No one asks.
We all know.
Josh’s voice stays even. “Same vehicle?”
“Yeah.”
A pause.
Then, quieter.
“And they didn’t leave.”
That lands differently.
Earlier, it came and went.
Now it’s still.
Waiting.
Jake shifts slightly closer behind me. “That’s not subtle.”
“It’s not supposed to be,” Patrick says.
That shifts everything.
Because this isn’t observation.
It’s a message.
Drew steps closer, his shoulder brushing mine, grounding without pulling.
Mike’s focus sharpens. “We don’t walk into that blind.”
“We’re not,” Patrick replies.
His voice doesn’t rise.
But it settles over everything anyway.
Control.
Josh glances toward the street, then back. “We move now.”
“Wait.”
Patrick’s voice cuts through it.
Quiet.
Final.
He steps forward just slightly, his gaze flicking once across the vehicle before returning.
“They want us to see them.”
Mike’s jaw flexes. “Yeah.”
“They’re not here to act,” Patrick continues. “They’re here to confirm.”
Jake’s voice drops. “Confirm what?”
Patrick’s gaze shifts to me.
“That she came.”
The space tightens.
I feel it has settled.
He said my name in there for a reason.
Not to get a reaction.
To make sure I was here.
Drew’s hand finds mine, this time staying, his grip light but steady.
Mike exhales slowly. “So now what?”
Patrick doesn’t answer right away.
He studies the car again, like he’s measuring something that isn’t obvious.
“He’s not doing this alone,” he says finally.
That lands.
Clean.
“He never did.”
Josh’s attention sharpens. “You think he still has people.”
“I know he does.”
A beat.
Then—
“We assume everything we do from here is seen.”
Silence.
Not empty.
Settling.
Jake’s voice comes quieter. “Including leaving.”
“Especially leaving.”
Patrick steps back into place. “Now we go.”
Josh nods once.
No hesitation.
We move toward the car, Mike falling in beside him, Jake staying just behind me.
Drew doesn’t let go of my hand until the last second.
I let it be.
Patrick stays beside me.
“Stay with me,” he says quietly.
“I am.”
We reach the car.
The doors open.
For a second, I glance across the street.
The SUV sits exactly where Mike said it would.
Dark.
Still.
Watching.
No attempt to hide.
No attempt to move.
Just presence.
A statement.
I look away first.
I don’t need to see more.
I already know what this is.
He used to watch me like that.
Like I was something that belonged to him, and distance didn’t matter. It never did.
I get in.
The door closes.
The outside cuts off.
Inside, the quiet settles again, tighter now, sharper, like something has shifted and won’t shift back.
Josh starts the engine.
No one speaks.
The car pulls out smoothly.
When we pass the street, no one turns to look.
Not even me.
We don’t need to.
We already know.
It didn’t end in there.
The drive back feels quieter than this morning's.
Not calmer.
Just heavier.
The city moves around us in steady lines, traffic building and breaking at lights, people crossing sidewalks without paying attention to the black SUV that had been sitting across from the courthouse, as it belonged there.
Like it had every right to watch us leave.
Josh keeps both hands steady on the wheel, his attention fixed ahead, while Mike checks the mirrors often enough that I stop counting after the fifth time.
Jake leans back beside me, outwardly relaxed, but his knee bounces once before he stills it again.
Drew stays close enough that our shoulders brush whenever the car turns.
Patrick remains silent.
That silence settles differently now.
Not distant.
Focused.
Like he’s already ten steps ahead of the rest of us, rearranging pieces no one else can fully see yet.
“We should switch routes,” Mike says eventually, his eyes still on the mirror.
“We already did,” Patrick replies.
Mike glances back slightly at that. “And?”
“They followed for three lights.”
The car goes quieter.
Jake straightens first. “You’re sure?”
“Yes.”
Josh’s grip tightens almost invisibly against the wheel before settling again. “Why stop?”
“Because this wasn’t about getting close,” Patrick says evenly. “It was about being seen.”
That lands harder than it should.
Not because it’s surprising.
Because it means Patrick’s right.
This was deliberate from the start.
A message.
Drew’s hand slides briefly against mine before settling palm-up beside me on the seat, giving me the choice instead of taking it.
I lace my fingers through his.
Just for a second.
Grounding.
Mike exhales slowly through his nose. “He’s pushing.”
“No,” Patrick says. “He’s escalating.”
The distinction settles heavily inside the car.
Jake looks toward the window again, his expression tighter now. “That means you think he’s getting out?”
Patrick’s gaze shifts toward me briefly before returning forward.
“It means he thinks he’s close enough to stop hiding.”
No one speaks after that.
Outside, the city continues to move as if nothing has changed.
Inside the car, everything has.
