Chapter 48 Held

Chapter 48 Held

The house is quieter than usual.

Not empty.

Just… held.

No one spreads out the way they normally do. Doors stay open. Lights stay on a little longer. Movement stays within range.

I notice it without thinking.

The way Josh checks the back door twice before stepping away.

The way Mike pauses at the window longer than he needs to.

The way Drew keeps passing through the same rooms, not lingering, just… circling.

Jake fills the space where he can, but even that stays softer tonight.

Patrick doesn’t say anything.

He doesn’t need to.

I stay downstairs.

Not because I have to.

Because I don’t want to be anywhere else.

The TV is on, something low and forgettable, more background than anything. Jake is stretched across one end of the couch, half paying attention. Mike leans against the arm, scrolling through his phone without really looking at it.

Josh stands near the hallway, arms crossed, his attention moving between all of us without settling.

Drew sits beside me.

Close.

Not touching.

Patrick is across from us, one arm resting against his knee, watching in that quiet way that never misses anything.

No one mentions tomorrow.

No one brings it into the room.

It stays just outside of it.

Jake mutters something at the TV, and Mike responds without looking up. Josh huffs under his breath. It almost feels normal.

Almost.

My fingers rest against the cushion beside me. Still. Unoccupied.

I’m aware of it.

The space.

The distance.

I don’t overthink it.

I shift slightly, closing it.

My hand brushes Drew’s.

Light.

Intentional.

He stills for half a second before his fingers turn, fitting against mine without hesitation. Not tight. Not loose.

Just there.

I don’t look at him.

I don’t need to.

The contact settles something in my chest, quiet and steady.

Across from us, Patrick’s gaze flicks down once, then back up. He doesn’t say anything.

Josh notices.

Of course he does.

His posture shifts slightly before he pushes off the wall and crosses the room, slow enough that it doesn’t pull attention, but deliberate enough that it lands anyway.

He sits on my other side.

Close.

Not touching at first.

A second passes.

Then his hand settles against my thigh, warm and steady, like it’s always been there.

No one comments.

Mike glances over once, then looks away again, something easing slightly in his shoulders.

Jake watches for a second longer, quieter than usual, before turning back to the TV.

The room adjusts around it.

Not reacting.

Accepting.

Drew’s thumb brushes once over my knuckles.

Josh’s fingers press slightly against my leg.

Grounding.

Both of them.

I breathe in slowly.

Let it out the same way.

The tension from earlier doesn’t disappear.

It shifts.

Spreads out instead of sitting sharply in one place.

Mike finally pushes off the couch and moves closer, dropping onto the other side of Josh. His arm stretches along the back, not quite behind me, but close enough that I feel the presence of it.

Jake follows a minute later, abandoning his spot to sprawl across the floor instead, back against the couch, shoulder brushing Mike’s leg.

“Terrible movie,” he mutters.

“You’re still watching it,” Mike replies.

“I’m committed now.”

Josh huffs quietly.

Drew shifts closer.

Not enough to crowd.

Just enough that his shoulder presses lightly into mine.

Patrick is the last to move.

He takes his time, like he’s measuring something before deciding it’s already been decided.

Then he stands and crosses the room, stopping just in front of us before sitting on the other side of Drew.

Close enough that the space is gone.

Not tight.

Just… full.

My gaze lifts to him for a second.

He holds it.

No words.

Just understanding.

Then his hand settles against my knee, light, steady, deliberate.

The contact pulls everything together.

Not overwhelming.

Not chaotic.

Structured.

Chosen.

The TV noise fades into the background. Conversations blur in and out, Jake complaining, Mike answering, Josh adding something low, Drew quiet beside me.

Patrick doesn’t speak.

He doesn’t need to.

My body registers it slowly.

The warmth.

The weight of them around me.

The absence of space.

Not trapping.

Not closing in.

Holding.

I let myself lean back.

Into it.

Into them.

No one reacts to the shift.

They just adjust.

Josh’s hand steadies.

Drew’s fingers tighten slightly.

Patrick’s thumb moves once against my knee.

Small.

Intentional.

My eyes close for a second.

Not long.

Just enough.

The tension settles deeper this time, not sharp, not pressing. Just there. Manageable.

Tomorrow sits at the edge of it.

Unspoken.

Waiting.

I don’t reach for it.

Not yet.

I stay here instead.

In this.

In the quiet.

In the way no one pulls away.

In the way no one lets me carry it alone.

My fingers tighten slightly in Drew’s hand.

Josh’s grip answers.

Patrick’s thumb stills, then presses once.

Jake shifts against the couch.

Mike exhales slowly.

Everything holds.

Steady.

For now, That’s enough.
