Chapter 90 Fading Echoes
Chapter 90 Fading Echoes
~Elowen's POV~
Morning light crept into the safe chamber, pale and unforgiving, highlighting every crack in the ancient stone walls.
The boy lay on the cot, skin ashen and clammy, his body flickering between ages as the fade pulled relentlessly at his hybrid soul.
One moment he looked ten, small and fragile; the next his limbs lengthened slightly, shoulders broadening before shrinking back in painful spasms.
I held his hand tightly, feeling his life thread thinning like a fraying rope about to snap.
Alaric arrived moments later, a fresh cut on his palm still bleeding freely, blood ready as an offering.
He knelt on the other side of the cot without a word, his broad frame casting a protective shadow over the boy.
"Use it," he said, voice low and resolute. "Whatever it takes, my blood is his if it saves him."
I guided his hand over the boy's chest, letting the warm drops fall onto the flickering skin.
The dual echo in my son's veins drank the blood greedily, Alaric's strong wolf line surging through the connection like a grounding anchor.
Then color slowly returned to the boy's face.
His breathing deepened, the erratic flickering between ages slowing until it stabilized once more.
"Thank you," I whispered, meeting Alaric's eyes across the cot. "For coming so quickly because he needs your blood. I know it wasn't easy after everything."
He stayed close, his free hand resting lightly on the boy's shoulder.
"No need to thank me... I've made mistakes that cost us years, Elowen. I believed lies when I should have trusted you with my whole heart. I let fear and pride win when I should have stood beside you. I'm sorry, truly sorry for the pain I caused."
The words cracked the vulnerability deep inside me that I had kept sealed for so long.
I leaned forward, old feelings and fresh fear tangling together, and he suddenly pressed his lips to mine.
It was soft, tentative, a mistake wrapped in lingering affection and the terror of losing our son.
For a heartbeat, the past felt close enough to touch again.
Without thinking, I returned the kiss gently, and his hand rose to cup my cheek with surprising tenderness.
Instantly, a sound at the corner made us pull apart sharply and I pushed him away.
Sylion stood there in the doorway, face tight with raw pain, his fists clenched at his sides. He had seen everything.
"Sylion—" I started, guilt flooding my voice.
"Don't!" He shook his head once, sharp and final. "I'm done waiting for choices that never come despite I've given everything."
Before I could reply, he turned and stormed out, boots echoing heavily down the corridor.
I knew exactly where he was headed... straight into Valerian's rift, alone and driven by hurt.
I touched my lips, regret already settling heavy in my chest like lead.
The boy stirred beside me, eyes opening clearer though still shadowed with exhaustion.
"He's going to get hurt, I felt it through the link. He's angry… and scared for us."
I squeezed his hand, forcing strength into my voice, "Don't worry, we'll bring him back... Rest now, we'll need you strong soon."

~Sylion's POV~
That afternoon, as I stepped through the unstable rift edge alone, the air immediately shifted into something alien and oppressive.
The Second World fringes felt wrong... air too thin, making every breath a struggle, and ground shifting like it breathed beneath my boots.
Dim violet light pulsed from distant arches that seemed to watch me with malevolent intelligence.
I moved fast, knife ready in one hand, claws extended on the other.
Cages lined the first chamber, holding minor captives... shifters and low-level wolves taken in recent raids, their eyes hollow with despair.
I sliced the locks open one by one with swift, precise strikes, freeing them.
"Go," I told them urgently, voice low but commanding. "Head back through the tear I left open. Don't stop for anything, run and don't look back."
A young woman with matted hair grabbed my arm as she passed, tears streaking her face.
"Thank you, but there are beasts ahead. Guardians with huge things like relic eyes... They'll tear you apart."
I nodded grimly, wiping blood from my blade. "I know, because I've faced worse. Get to safety and tell Elowen I tried."
She nodded and they left.
Deeper in, the ground trembled violently. Three guardian beasts erupted from the shadows.
They were massive, scaled things with relic eyes glowing blood-red, and jaws dripping venom. They charged with earth-shaking roars.
I shifted mid-leap, meeting the first with claws and teeth in a savage collision.
We rolled across the stone floor, tearing at each other in a blur of fur and scale. Pain flared white-hot as its fangs sank deep into my shoulder.
I twisted free with a roar, slashing its throat open in one brutal motion. Black blood sprayed across the walls.
The second caught me from the side without warning, slamming me into a jagged wall. Bones cracked audibly in my ribs and blood filled my mouth with a metallic tang.
I drove my knife into its eye, twisting viciously until it shrieked and collapsed.
The third beast raked claws down my back, deep and vicious, tearing through muscle and leaving burning poison in the wounds.
I dropped to one knee, vision blurring as fire spread through my veins.
Valerian then stepped out from the darkness, calm and unhurried, as if he had been watching the entire fight for entertainment.
He looked down at me, head tilted with mild curiosity.
"Impressive solo run, Sylion. Most don't make it this far without breaking." He gestured at my bleeding wounds with casual indifference.
"I can offer mercy and healing, even in a place here among the strong. Just yield Elowen by telling me where she hides the boy and step aside. No one else needs to die today."
"Never!" I spat blood at his feet, chest heaving. "She's not yours to trade or bargain over, neither is the boy. You'll have to kill me first to get to them."
Valerian sighed, almost disappointed. "Pity, such a wasted loyalty."
Out of the blue, he nodded toward the side. A teenage girl stood there, eyes vacant and enthralled by dark threads of compulsion, her small frame rigid like a puppet.
She moved forward mechanically, a poisoned relic dagger clutched in her trembling hand.
"End this," Valerian ordered softly, voice almost gentle.
The girl raised the blade with unnatural steadiness. I tried to lift my arm to stop her, but strength failed me completely.
The dagger plunged into my side, poison spreading like liquid fire through my bloodstream and pain exploded outward.
Darkness edged my vision as I collapsed fully to the stone floor, the last thing I heard being Valerian's quiet laugh echoing through the chamber.
"The rift had claimed its price..."
