Chapter 107 Last Traitor Falls
Chapter 107 Last Traitor Falls
~Sylion's POV~
Veyra came through the doorway fast and low, leading with his elbow... a hybrid's instinct, closing distance before the larger man could use his reach.
I stepped aside instead of back, and his elbow caught air.
Mine caught his shoulder, redirecting his momentum sideways into the corridor wall with a sound that the plaster remembered.
He peeled off it quickly, credit where it was due, and his recovery was excellent. He turned with a short blade already drawn from somewhere at his hip... Hybrid-enhanced.
I had clocked that in the great hall. Which meant his speed had a ceiling I could not match and his pain threshold was significantly higher than a standard wolf's.
So I stopped trying to match him and started waiting instead.
He came in with the blade angled for the ribs, feinting left. I took the feint, let it pull my guard, and the blade caught me across the forearm instead of where it was going.
Fire ran up to the elbow. I noted it and moved on.
"You're not fighting like an Alpha," Veyra said, circling, his breathing still measured. "You're fighting like a man who's trying to survive long enough for someone else to arrive."
"Those aren't mutually exclusive," I countered.
He moved again, faster this time, the hybrid edge showing properly now, a blur at the edge of what my eyes could fully track.
The second blade appeared from his left hand and I caught it on my forearm again, same arm, same general area. Different pain this time, deeper.
I kept my feet, and he read that as an opening.
His chin lifted slightly, the particular shift of a man whose confidence has just grown by a fraction he is not aware of.
His right hand went for the second weapon at his belt, and that was the moment.
I drove forward with everything I had left, shoulder into his sternum, and we hit the opposite wall together with force enough to shake the corridor's hanging light fixture.
Veyra's wrist came up and I took it in both hands, applying the Tharros joint lock... a hold that does not negotiate or warn, simply informs the bones that they have reached their limit.
The snap was clean, making Veyra's blade hit the floor.
He made a sound that was more shock than pain, and then my forearm was across his collarbone. His back was against the wall, and there was nowhere left for the calculation to go.
"The Tharros hold," he said through his teeth, his one functioning hand pinned at his side. "Your bloodline's only original contribution to pack combat."
"It's enough," I said.
He tested the hold once, found it the same as described and stopped testing.
I held him there while my arm bled steadily and the corridor settled into the particular quiet of a fight that had finished.
Somewhere behind the great hall doors, the Relic's recitation had gone silent, which meant it had said everything it came to say.
After a moment, I heard boots on the corridor floor with several sets, unhurried now.
I looked at Veyra, at the face I had read a hundred times across tables and battlefields and had never once correctly identified, and felt nothing dramatic.
Just the flat, clean exhaustion of a job that took longer than it should have.
"Sit down, Sylion," Alaric's voice came from the corridor's end. "I have him now."
I released the hold and stepped back.
Then I sat on the floor with my back against the wall, my bleeding arm resting across my knee, and I waited for the room to stop tilting slightly at the edges...
★★★
~Elowen's POV~
Alaric had Veyra restrained and handed off to two Dravenmere wolves before I reached Sylion, who was sitting against the wall with the specific stillness of someone conserving the last of their available resources.
I crouched in front of him and his eyes came up to mine... calm, a little grey at the sides from blood loss, but present.
"Both forearms?" I asked.
"The left is worse."
I opened the kit I had grabbed from the Pack House medical cabinet on my way through and got to work, my hands moving through the familiar sequence with pressure, assessment, and close bind.
The first cut was deep, and the second had caught the muscle. He watched my face while I worked, and I was aware of it.
"The left one is going to take longer to fully close," I said, not looking up. "You'll need to keep it elevated for the next few hours and I mean actually elevated, not resting it on a table and calling that close enough."
"Understood," he nodded. I moved to the second forearm, tilting it carefully to read the wound's angle.
The corridor was quieter now as the Dravenmere wolves moved Veyra toward containment at the far end, the Pack House resettling itself around the absence of the stasis vapor.
People were talking in low voices elsewhere in the building, the ordinary sounds of the aftermath.
Sylion was still watching my face.
I applied the closure strip to the deepest point of the second cut, pressing with two fingers to hold it, and felt him draw a slow breath.
"You do not have to choose right now," the words came quietly, without weight or demand, placed between us the same way he placed everything with patience.
"I just want you to know that I am not going anywhere."
My hands stopped for one beat. Then kept moving. I smoothed the closure strip, checked the pressure, and reached for the binding wrap without looking up.
My lips had been moving slightly, calculating the healing dose, estimating recovery time, and the internal arithmetic of a healer's focus.
But in the silence that followed, in the particular quality of the way he exhaled, I understood that he had heard everything behind them.
I tied off the binding and finally looked up. He met my eyes and said nothing, which was exactly right.
Then I heard footsteps from the great hall doorway... small, deliberate ones.
Alaric's daughter walked into the corridor with the Relic crystal cradled in both hands, her eyes fully her own again, clear and direct.
She passed Veyra without looking at him.
She passed me and Sylion without stopping, though her eyes touched mine briefly, checking, finding what she needed, before moving on.
She stopped in front of Alaric.
He crouched down to her level immediately, his hands coming up to check her face, her eyes, her hands... and she let him do it.
When he finished, she lifted the crystal between them. "It wants you to finish it, Daddy," she said simply.
Alaric took it from her hands.
The moment it settled in his palms, the colour left his face... not fear, but the look of a man receiving a transmission that is filling every available space inside him at once.
His eyes went distant and focused simultaneously, fixed on the rest of us who could not see...
