Chapter 199 The Deep South Refugees
Chapter 199 The Deep South Refugees
IVY’S POV
The seven wolves looked like they'd been running for weeks. They were thin, and exhausted. Eyes darting to every shadow like they expected attack. We met them in a secure conference room, me, Damon, Marcus, and Elena. Went in a small group to avoid overwhelming them.
Their leader was a woman in her forties. Silver-grey hair, scarred face.
"My name is Vera Blackwood," she said. "And I have no relation to the Alpha Gerard in your council. We’re from different bloodlines entirely."
"You requested asylum," I said. "And you mentioned knowing my mother. Emma Reed."
Vera's expression softened. "I knew her. We were friends before the Purge. Both of us were investigating something. She died before we could expose it."
"Investigating what?"
"A network. A conspiracy that predates even the Alpha King's reign. Emma called it 'the Old Guard.'"
Elena leaned forward sharply. "I never heard Emma mention anything like that."
"Because she kept it secret. Even from family. She was afraid if the wrong people knew she was investigating, they'd kill her."
Vera's voice went bitter.
"Turns out she was right."
My stomach twisted. "What kind of conspiracy?"
"The kind that's been controlling pack politics for generations. Manipulating bloodlines. Eliminating threats. The Alpha King was just their latest tool."
She pulled out a worn folder, some old documents inside.
"Emma gave me copies of everything she'd found. Made me promise that if anything happened to her, I'd continue the investigation. Find proof and expose them."
"And?" Damon asked.
"I've spent fifteen years gathering evidence while staying hidden. The Old Guard has been rebuilding since the Alpha King fell. Getting stronger. And now they're making their move."
She spread documents across the table. Names. Dates. Financial transactions. Bloodline charts.
"They're based in the Deep South territories. Have been for centuries. And they're planning something big. Something that will destabilize everything you've built."
I studied the documents. Some names I recognized, old Council families, traditional Alphas, and wolves with connections to the original Purge.
Others were unknown.
"Why come to us now?" Marcus asked. "Why not expose this years ago?"
"Because I didn't have enough proof. Just fragments and suspicions. But three months ago, I infiltrated one of their meetings."
Vera's hands shook slightly.
"They're planning to eliminate the Phantom bloodline. All of it. Not through another Purge, they learned that creates martyrs. They’re planning to use genetic manipulation. They want to introduce a virus that targets Phantom DNA specifically."
The room went silent.
"A virus," Elena repeated. "That kills Phantoms."
"It kills slowly, over months. Makes it look like natural illness. And it’s undetectable until it's too late."
Vera looked at me directly.
"Your children are the primary targets. And any Phantom child. They want to eliminate the next generation before they can grow strong enough to resist."
“No,” my wolf snarled. “No one touches our children.”
"How far along is this plan?" Damon asked, his voice deadly calm.
"I don't know. That's why we ran. Once they realized I'd infiltrated their meeting, we had to leave immediately. But based on what I heard, they're in the testing phase. Refining the virus. Making sure it's undetectable."
She paused.
"They could deploy it within months. Maybe weeks."
I felt rage and fear warring inside me. We'd fought so hard. Survived so much. And now someone wanted to poison our children.
"Who leads this Old Guard?" I demanded.
Vera hesitated. "That's the problem. I never saw the leadership. They operate through proxies. Hidden identities. The meeting I infiltrated only had mid-level operatives."
"So we have a threat, but no clear target," Marcus said.
"Not exactly. I have a lead. One name that kept coming up. Someone high in the organization who might be vulnerable to pressure."
Vera pulled out a photograph.
I stared at it. Recognized the face.
"That's Alpha Victoria Stone," I said slowly.
What?
Victoria. The swing vote who'd supported us. She brought her mountain pack into our alliance and had been a loyal Council member for three years.
"Are you saying Victoria is part of this conspiracy?" Damon asked.
"I'm saying her name appears in documents. And in communications I intercepted. Either she's involved, or someone close to her is."
“No,” my wolf said. “Victoria saved us. She wouldn't betray us.”
But I'd been wrong about people before.
"What do you want from us?" I asked Vera.
"Protection for my people. And help investigating the Old Guard. Emma died. I'm not dying for nothing."
She met my eyes.
"Your mother believed the truth mattered more than safety. She was right. These people have controlled pack society for too long. It's time to burn them out."
I looked at Damon. He was thinking the same thing I was.
We'd spent three years building peace. Building stability.
And now we had to go to war again.
But this time, it wasn't about our survival. It was about our children's future.
"Alright," I said. "You've got asylum. And you've got our help."
"But first," Damon added, "we're going to have a very interesting conversation with Alpha Victoria Stone."
The confrontation happened that afternoon.
We called Victoria to Crescent City under the pretext of a Council security briefing. She arrived within hours, bringing only her Beta.
When we presented Vera's evidence, Victoria's face went pale.
"This is insane," she said. "You think I'm part of some old conspiracy?"
"Your name is in the documents," I said. "Multiple times. Explain that."
She looked at the papers. Her hands were shaking.
"I can't," she said finally. "Because I don't know how it got there."
"Not good enough," Damon said.
Her Beta stepped forward. "Alpha Stone is innocent. I'll swear it on my life."
"Then swear it," I said. "Both of you. Formal oath. If you're lying, we'll know."
The oath ritual was ancient, but still effective. If they lied, their wolves would react violently.
They both agreed without hesitation.
They swore they had no knowledge of the Old Guard. No involvement in any conspiracy. No plans to harm Phantom children.
Neither showed signs of deception.
Elena, watching carefully, nodded. "They're telling the truth."
Vera, observing from the corner, frowned. "Then someone's using her name without her knowledge. Implicating her to throw off investigation."
"Or to get me killed," Victoria said quietly. "If you'd believed I was part of this, what would you have done?"
Executed her probably. Or imprisoned her indefinitely.
Someone wanted Victoria eliminated. Used her name to make it happen.
"I'm sorry," I said. "We had to verify."
"I understand. But now that we know I'm not involved, I want to help. Someone tried to frame me. I want to know who."
She looked at Vera.
"You said you have leads. Where do we start?"
Vera smiled grimly. "With the one name I'm absolutely certain about. The Old Guard's operations coordinator. A wolf named Thomas Ashford."
I froze. "Ashford? As in…"
"Kira Ashford's brother," Vera confirmed. "The one who disappeared after the Purge. Everyone assumed he was dead."
Elena's voice was tight. "I know that name"
"He vanished," Vera said. "But he didn't die. He went underground. Joined the Old Guard. Rose through their ranks."
She pulled out surveillance photos.
"He's in the Deep South now. Running their operations. And he's the key to finding their leadership."
Damon stood. "Then we find him. Bring him in. Make him talk."
"It won't be easy," Vera warned. "The Deep South territories don't recognize Council authority. They're essentially independent. Going after Ashford means invading sovereign territory."
"Then we invade," I said.
Marcus cleared his throat. "That could trigger a regional war. The South has been tolerating Council reforms. This might push them into active resistance."
He was right. But I didn't care.
Someone wanted to kill my children. Wanted to eliminate Phantom children with a virus.
I'd burned the world down before I let that happen.
"We don't invade," Damon said, seeing my expression. "We infiltrate. Small team. Extract Ashford quietly. Get the information we need without starting a war."
He looked at me.
"You, me, Marcus, and Vera. Four wolves. In and out before anyone knows we're there."
“Dangerous,” my wolf observed. “Really dangerous.”
"When do we leave?" I asked.
"Tomorrow night. We'll need to prepare. Get intelligence on Ashford's location. Plan extraction routes."
Victoria spoke up. "I'm coming with you."
"No," Damon said. "You're a Council member. If you're captured in the South, it's an act of war."
"And if you're captured, it isn't? You're the King and Queen. Your capture would be worse."
She had a point.
"I have resources in the South," Victoria continued. "Contacts. Information networks. You need me."
Damon and I exchanged looks. She wasn't wrong.
"Fine," I said. "Five wolves. But you follow orders. If things go bad, you run."
Victoria nodded.
We had three days to plan an infiltration into hostile territory. Extract a target who'd been hiding for fifteen years. Get answers about a conspiracy that predated our entire government.
And do it without starting a war that would destroy everything we'd built.
“Here we go again,” my wolf said.
"Yeah. Here we go again."
That night, I checked on Luna and Emmett.
They were sleeping peacefully.
"We're going to keep you safe," I whispered. "Whatever it takes."
Damon appeared beside me. "They'll be okay. Elena, Adam, and Marcus's entire security detail will be here. Plus the Academy is on lockdown. No one gets near them."
"I know. But I hate leaving them."
"Me too."
We stood there together. Parents facing impossible choices. Risk our lives to protect our children's future. Or stay safe and let the threat grow.
We'd always choose the same thing.
Family first. Always.
Even if it meant walking into danger and facing an enemy we barely understood.
“Tomorrow,” my wolf said. “Tomorrow we hunt.”
