Chapter 189 MONSTERS ARE NOT ONLY CREATED, THEY COULD BE MADE TOO
UNKNOWN'S POV
“So tell me–”
The goddess smiled with mischief.
“Why exactly do werewolves keep praying to me?”
The question lingered in the clearing even long after her voice had faded but for the first time or rather the second time in his life–
Dax truly had no answer.
Because suddenly, everything that could possibly go wrong, went straight to hell.
Horrifyingly wrong.
The altar, the first, the prayers and the supposed “Moon goddess”.
Even the word itself, goddess now sounded rotten and corrupted in his head.
Dax stared at her glowing figure as his thoughts went haywire and violently out of control.
If she wasn’t tied to werewolves at all…
If she wasn’t even their creator…
Then what exactly had they all been worshipping all this time for centuries if not a millenia?!
His stomach churned like something spoiled.
Beside him, Lance was still arguing with her, almost forgetting the power structure between them as his voice grew sharp and furious.
But Dax barely heard any of it anymore. The sounds of argument felt distant and far from him.
It was all muted beneath the screaming inside his ears.
His gaze drifted towards Sebastian’s unconscious form still lying atop the altar and wondered how good and peaceful it might be if he had just followed his mate in death twenty years ago.
And suddenly–
Dax saw blood.
It wasn't on Sebastian or around the altar, instead it was on him.
All over his hands, they were still dripping in his arms and claws as the memories of them all came crashing down on him all at once.
Screaming Rogues with terror in their eyes as he slaughtered them all.
A pregnant woman clutching her stomach while begging him not to kill her child because she had been bitten by a Rogue.
A Rogue boy no older than fifteen being protected by his sister who was pried by Dax as he killed him.
Please.
Please don’t–
He had killed them anyway.
The spell called for several souls so he foolishly assumed that they were a “good alternative” since they were all practically dead.
Again.
Again.
And again.
The screamings slammed through his skull until he physically stumbled.
“No,” he whispered.
The word slipped out before he realized it.
It was soft and guttural coming from his throat but loud enough to end their argument immediately.
They both slowly turned to look at him as Dax’s breathing had turned into something else.
“No,” he repeated hoarsely, staring at her with growing horror in his eyes.
“No, this is… this is fucked up.”
The goddess blinked once as if almost curious as to what was eating him up.
She was currently getting energy from the misery Dax is feeling now, but she didn't really get why.
Dax forced himself to stand despite the trembling in his legs.
“How could you do that?!” he demanded with a rough voice.
“How could you create Rogues knowing they’re still conscious enough to beg and to pray to you?! To feel all the misery and pain while still trapped like animals?!”
His throat tightened painfully.
“You let them suffer like that for centuries?!”
For a moment, the goddess merely started him with a scrunched up face, then she… she smiled.
“Oh,” she said lightly, “that wasn’t my original plan Dax my child.”
Dax froze looking at the silver light following her and lit up the altar as she wandered casually around the altar trailing her fingers on it.
“You see,” she mused, “I was perfectly content feeding from all the Omegas suffering in the realm.”
Lance frowned sharply beside him as “their goddess” sighed with a content smile.
“The loneliness when they're ostracized for being too weak, the rejection when they find their mates and the isolation–oh it was delicious!”
She sighed and continued.
“The pain of being weaker than everyone around them while still being needed for mere procreation…” She smiled faintly.
“Delicious, honestly.”
Dax felt sick to his stomach.
“For centuries,” she continued, “your species worshipped me so faithfully that I never needed anything else to grow powerful.”
Her silver eyes gleamed.
“Then the Rogues appeared.”
The goddess looked genuinely pleased with that fact.
“At first, I'll admit I did find them annoying,” she admitted. “Mindless, violent beasts that acted like they were infected with rabies.”
She paused.
“But then I realized something.”
A slow smile spread across her face as she moved closer to them
“Omegas suffer periodically.”
Her voice softened.
“But Rogues suffer forever.”
“Every second of every day,” she whispered almost reverently.
“They suffer constant hunger and rage, constant agony clawing through their minds until death finally takes them.”
Her smile widened.
“So why the hell would I get rid of something so efficient for me?”
Lance took an unconscious step backward as beside him Dax could barely breathe anymore.
The goddess laughed quietly at their expressions.
“Oh, don’t look at me like that,” she chided lightly. “I didn’t create the first Rogues after all.”
Dax frowned weakly.
“What?”
She waved one translucent hand dismissively.
“The condition already existed in the realm. I merely…” Her smile sharpened. “Improved it, that's all.”
Ice flooded Dax’s veins.
“The bites,” she said almost cheerfully. “The scratches and the fact that the infection could spread from wolf to wolf just from those.”
Her eyes sparkled with amusement.
“Now that part was my idea.”
Lance stared at her in disbelief as she merely giggled.
“You see I got the inspiration from a zombie movie in the human realm actually. Those humans make such entertaining horror films, sadly you wolves would never see them.”
Dax felt physically ill at how flippant she was about everything.
“So no,” she said smoothly, “don’t blame me for the Rogue infestation boys.”
Her silver gaze darkened with raw delight.
“I didn’t start it.”
A pause from her.
“I only ever made sure it never ended.”
The forest suddenly felt like it was suffocating.
Wrong, everything about this felt wrong as Dax’s hands shook violently.
All those deaths, all of the Rogues that have been hunted to death by other wolves, parents killing their children that turned Rogues.
Mates killing their Rogue spouses…
All those prayers of help–
And she had listened to every single one merely smiling and feeding up on their sufferings.
