Chapter 174 Breathing Space
Chapter 174 Dead Men's Signals
Lyra POV
The soft purr of the transport vehicle's engine broke the silence as I gazed through the window at the shifting scenery. Gabriel was next to me, his presence a comforting constant as we made our way to the Council headquarters. Between us, secured and sedated, sat Kade, the man who had orchestrated our abduction and torture.
My mind drifted back to yesterday, after my heartfelt conversation with Isabella. Gabriel had worked with remarkable efficiency, contacting Council members and securing an emergency meeting. When we returned to interrogate Kade one final time before the hearing, he remained stubbornly silent, refusing to reveal his accomplices or true motives.
"Don't worry," I had told Gabriel when he expressed concern about Kade's continued silence. "I have a plan."
Gabriel had looked at me with a mixture of curiosity and concern, but trusted me enough not to press further.
Now, as the transport vehicle navigated the winding roads toward the Council headquarters, Kade stirred from his sedation. His eyes fluttered open, confusion giving way to sharp awareness as he realized his situation.
"Where are you taking me?"
I turned to him, meeting his gaze steadily. "To the Council. Where you'll confess to conspiring with Council members to kidnap and torture two Alphas."
Kade's lips curved into a cold smile. "No can do, little wolf. I've endured far worse than whatever punishment your Council can dream up."
I leaned forward, matching his cold smile with one of my own. "You misunderstand. I'm not asking."
His smirk faltered slightly at the confidence in my voice. I felt Gabriel's questioning gaze, but kept my focus on Kade. My wolf stirred within me, sensing my intent. I would use my abilities one more time—not to heal, but to compel truth from darkness.
"Be careful," she cautioned. "His mind is a labyrinth of shadows."
---
When we arrived at the Council headquarters, armed guards immediately surrounded our vehicle. They opened the doors and efficiently secured Kade, placing silver handcuffs around his wrists. The metal sizzled slightly against his skin, and he winced but remained defiant.
Gabriel and I were escorted through familiar corridors, but this time to a different section of the building. Instead of being led to the central interrogation platform where I had once stood trial, we were guided to the elevated seats surrounding it.
The man leading us was the same silver-haired councilor who had attempted to moderate the proceedings during my last trial.
"This is the real Zachary," Gabriel whispered, his hand resting lightly on my lower back. "He's the one who helped arrange this emergency meeting."
So this is Zachary! I felt a surge of gratitude toward him. It was council members like him who gave me hope that justice might actually prevail in our world of power struggles and ancient politics.
Zachary nodded respectfully to us both. "Alpha Gabriel, Alpha Lyra. Please take your seats. The proceedings will begin shortly."
I noticed Alpha Malcolm already seated in his elevated position. When his eyes met mine, they burned with undisguised hatred. I deliberately turned my head, exposing the fresh mating mark on my neck—Gabriel's claim visible for all to see. A clear message that Gabriel and I were now irrevocably bonded, our strength combined.
"He fears us even more now," my wolf observed with satisfaction.
Gabriel's voice filtered through our mate bond: "Stay calm. We'll face this together."
I squeezed his hand in silent acknowledgment as we took our seats.
The chamber fell silent as Kade was brought in. His expression remained defiant, but I could sense a flicker of unease as he surveyed the room. Alpha Malcolm's face betrayed a momentary panic before he composed himself, straightening in his chair with forced dignity.
Alpha Zachary rose to his feet, his voice carrying through the chamber. "We are gathered for an emergency hearing regarding serious allegations against Kade Mercer, who stands accused of conspiring with Council members to abduct and torture Alpha Lyra Ellis and Alpha Gabriel Thorne."
A murmur rippled through the assembled Alphas and Council members.
Zachary turned to Kade. "Do you deny these charges?"
To everyone's surprise, he spoke clearly: "No. I admit to the charges."
The chamber erupted in shocked whispers. Gabriel glanced at me, confusion evident in his eyes.
"How did he suddenly decide to confess?" he asked through our link.
I clenched my jaw, focusing intently on maintaining my connection to Kade's mind. "It's the white wolf's ability. But his mind is incredibly dark. This is all I can manage for now."
Zachary called for order, then addressed Kade again. "You admit to abducting and torturing two Alphas. Did you act alone?"
"No," Kade replied, his voice mechanical yet clear. "I had help from Alpha Malcolm. He provided the location, resources, and protection from Council interference."
The chamber exploded with outrage. Accusations of corruption and calls for immediate action filled the air. Malcolm leapt to his feet, his face contorted with rage.
"This is absurd! He's lying!" Malcolm shouted, pointing accusingly at Gabriel and me. "They've clearly coerced him somehow!"
Gabriel rose, his voice cutting through the chaos. "We've done nothing but bring a criminal to justice. The evidence of his crimes against us is irrefutable."
I felt my concentration wavering. Kade's mind was unlike anything I'd encountered. It's darker and more resistant than even Dominic's had been. Purifying his energy was draining me rapidly.
"I can't go on any further," I warned Gabriel through our link.
"It's enough," he assured me. "His confession and Malcolm's reaction have already convinced most of the Council."
Zachary was struggling to restore order when Malcolm suddenly bellowed, "NOW!"
The sound of shattering glass filled the chamber as windows exploded inward. Before anyone could react, two precise gunshots rang out. Kade's body jerked backward, a silver bullet hole appearing in the center of his forehead. A second shot found Malcolm, who collapsed with an identical wound.
Gabriel tackled me to the floor, covering my body with his as chaos erupted. Council guards rushed to the windows while others secured the room. Screams and shouts echoed through the chamber.
After several tense minutes, Zachary's voice rose above the pandemonium. "The perimeter guards report seeing a sniper fleeing the scene. They were unable to apprehend him."
Gabriel helped me to my feet, keeping me partially behind him as Zachary approached the bodies. He examined both men carefully, noting the identical silver bullet wounds that had left massive exit wounds at the backs of their heads.
"They're both dead," Zachary announced grimly.
I stared at the bodies in shock. The blood pooling beneath Malcolm and Kade created nearly identical patterns on the chamber floor. A complex mixture of emotions washed over me—relief that these threats were eliminated, horror at the violence, and frustration that our best leads were now permanently silenced.
The timing was too perfect. Malcolm's shout had clearly been a signal. He'd had a contingency plan: if either he or Kade revealed too much, they'd both be eliminated to protect whoever else was involved in their conspiracy.
I met Gabriel's eyes, and I knew he'd reached the same conclusion. Through our link, we shared the same disturbing thought: this wasn't over.
