Chapter 58 CHAPTER 58
Chapter 58 CHAPTER 58
I sat at the polished oak table, fingertips resting on the warm ceramic of my coffee mug.
We were still seating in the living room planning the wedding details that we have both been avoiding.
And it’s like his mother refuses to let us go until everything is finalised. That’s not even possible we, can’t plan a wedding in one seating.
“Tasha’s name is missing,” Alex finally said.
My gaze snapped up to him. My breath caught for half a second. Why would he say that, how could he say that?
I studied the firm line of his jaw and the way his shoulders squared beneath his crisp shirt.
The statement settled between us awkwardly, I even have to pay mind that he’s mother is here. I can’t lash out on him.
He looked straight at me, lifting one hand with an open palm. “I’m only suggesting it because I know you need her there as your maid of honour. It makes sense. She’s been part of this from the start.”
I leaned back slightly. “She has been part of what from the start?” I asked giving him a stern look warning him of his next words to me.
“I mean, she has been your best friend since forever. It would make sense that she gets to be your maid of honour.” My fingers tightened around the mug handle, he didn’t get my warning.
“Oh, is it? It makes sense to you. And how do you even know that we had plans that she will be my maid of honour? I never told you that.” I said looking at him, he swallowed darted his eyes from me to his mother who was also looking at him.
“You didn’t have to tell, I know that if it was me that’s how I would’ve wanted things to go. To be with your best friend in the good and bad.” Wow, he is really staying on his word.
“What if she doesn’t want to be my maid of honour?” My voice came out steady, but the question made him pause for a minute. I guess he didn’t think it through then did he.
“Would you want to attend a wedding where you will watch your best friend marry your mate? I didn’t think so.” I said before I leaned back on the couch, breathing evenly.
Alex’s mother paused, her silver bracelet chiming softly against her teacup saucer.
She cleared her throat. “Perhaps we can revisit the guest list after the cake tasting next week. No need to decide everything today.”
Of course, you try to calm things now. You did this, we would’ve made our own guest where he wouldn’t question anything I give him.
Alex pushed his chair back. The legs scraped against the tile floor.
He stood, reaching for the white coat on the chair. Fabric rustled as he shrugged it on, the embroidered “Dr Smith.” catching the light on his chest. “I’m late for rounds.”
His mother rose too, smoothing her blouse. “Okay, you can go to work and I can drop Ayla off at her house on my way to the garden club. It’s no trouble at all.”
Alex’s eyes turned to me. My lips curved into a quick small smile. I nodded once, the motion feeling tight. My fingers curled around the strap of my bag on the floor.
Alex rounded the table. His hand brushed my shoulder, warm and familiar. He leaned down and pressed his lips to my forehead, the cedar scent of his aftershave brushing past me.
“I’ll call you after my shift.” The front door clicked shut behind him, his footsteps fading down the walk.
I slipped my feet into my flat shoes.
I grabbed my bag, canvas handle rough in my palm, and followed his mother outside.
The silver sedan’s engine purred to life. I clicked my seatbelt into place as we rolled forward.
“I’m so happy to see how quickly you two have fallen in love,” his mother said after a few blocks.
Her manicured nails tapped once on the steering wheel. Vanilla air freshener and her floral perfume filled the car.
“It reminds me of how things were with Alex’s father in the beginning. Effortless.”
My mouth softened. I turned toward the window.
“Yeah, we make each other happy.” Memories of Alex’s laugh from the night before flickered through my mind, his fingers tracing slow circles on my back.
The car slowed and turned onto my street. “But I also know about the other Alpha you’ve been seeing,” she added.
My pulse jumped hard at my throat.
I shifted in the seat, the belt pressing firmer across my chest. My house came into view, brick walls, white shutters, the lavender pots by the door.
The car stopped at the curb.
I turned to face her fully, pressing my hands flat against my thighs.
“I’m not seeing him.” The words came out clear. My heartbeat thudded against my ribs. The leather seat creaked under me as I held her burning gaze.
She put the car in park. She adjusted her grip on the wheel, then let her hands fall to her lap.
“I’m not a child, I won’t go back and forth with you but I have one thing to ask of you.” I stared at her, feeling my skin getting hot by the second I spent looking at her
“Pick a side or I’ll tell Alex what I saw.” Her voice stayed calm, almost pleasant, but the words landed heavy. She offered nothing more.
I stared at the faint lines around her eyes and the way her pearl earrings caught the light. My breath stayed controlled.
What had she seen? The question repeated in my head as I reached for the door handle.
I stepped out onto the sidewalk, bag bumping against my hip. The car door shut behind me with a solid thunk.
I stood on the familiar path, watching the car drive away.
My hand stayed gripped on the bag strap, my pulse still beat strong at my neck. “What did she see me do with Branden?”
