Chapter 51 How dare you raise your claws at her?
AXEL'S POV
I watched as the Alphas walked in orderly in a single file, some of them casted their gaze on the cold body of the Alpha on the ground. I already got what I wanted; instilling them with enough fear that would make them think twice before considering betraying me. As soon as I took a step forward, Jake tapped my shoulder, making me pause. “Alpha-” He pushed an envelope to my hand.
Lucas, who was also about to leave paused upon seeing this, his gaze fell on the envelope in my hands and to my face.
“Don't worry, I'll deal with this.” I dismissed him. I knew that he was curious but the last thing I wanted was for him to find out that my pack was dealing with another issue of its own.
He nodded to my direction before leaving, his beta to be also gave me a meaningful look before following him. When I turned, I noticed the anger that appeared on Jake's face. “What is wrong?” I asked him, carefully unsealing the envelope.
“I just don't like those pairs, why do you even trust them?” He rubbed the bridge of his nose.
“Cause we need allies and they are sincere enough.” I answered with a matter of fact tone as I succeeded in breaking the seal of the envelope.
The letter this time did not change so much.
You can try to hide her
Just know that we'll be coming for her sooner than expected.
And by the time we leave,
Her blood will replace the very spot where you stand.
I clenched the letter tightly, almost crumpling it beyond recognition of not for Jake who forced it out of my hand. He took one look and the expression on his face was no better than mine.
Instead it was calm, the scary kind of calm that revealed that something was brewing on the surface. “What are we going to do? We need to send them some kind of response but how can we do that when we don't know who is behind this.” He furrowed his brow.
“This only proves to me that they are either infiltrating the pack to stop this off- “ I started.
“Or they have a mole on the inside and this person has a special identity for them to be well hidden from us.” Jake continued from where I stopped.
“Has Drary seen this yet?”
“The moment he got the letter, he was heading towards this place so I tricked him into giving it to me. I'm sure he's going to show up at some point, it's best to be well prepared.”
“That's alright, keep this away from sight-” I paused for a moment. “In fact, just burn it. I don't want anyone finding out about this yet.”
“What if Drary shows up, requesting it? You know the type of person he is and you know that he wouldn't take this matter lightly since his favorite is the one involved.”
As soon as Jake ended his words, we heard a loud commotion. We shared a glance and rushed into the hall only to see Drary with his concubine hanging on the side.
Gwendolyn stared at everyone with slight disdain in her eyes, refusing to show the slightest respect. Lucas was glaring at Drary. “I don't think you got the invitation, only Alpha's and stand in alphas are allowed to be present and-” His eyes fell on Gwendolyn and lingered on her a bit. “I don't think this is a party where you're supposed to bring a plus one.”
“What do you mean by that? My father called for this alliance, and I'm sure he would want me to be here.” Drary retorted with a haughty tone of voice while Gwendolyn scoffed at Lucas.
I noticed how Lucas' eyes darkened at the blatant disrespect from the both of them, if I could, his beta certainly sensed his change of mood. “Calm down, now is not the best time to harsh it out. She wouldn't like that.” Luther whispered in a very low tone but I was able to pick up his words.
Who is she?
I wondered in my thoughts.
As soon as he heard Luther's words, Lucas' anger which seemed to bubble on the surface instantly deflated.
That's a surprise.
Who is this she that would make him rein in his anger immediately.
His friend, sister or perhaps mate?
My eyes brightened at the idea of Lucas having a secret mate, it was something that I haven't heard of yet but I'm willing to find out.
“You think your father wanted you to be here?” Lucas broke into a cold laugh that was harsh to the hearing, the smile on Drary's face dropped until it was completely gone. “You shouldn't keep living in delusion. Come on, let's return to our seats.”
“What do you mean?”
Lucas didn't respond, he simply turned around to leave. All of a sudden, Gwendolyn grabbed the helm of his shirt. “He is talking to you, how dare you turn around and walk away from him, you filthy-”
“Don't you dare complete that word or it would not end well for you.” In a flash, Luther arrived behind Gwendolyn, his claws were aimed at her throat, one wrong move and he could reduce her to a corpse.
Gwendolyn froze, feeling the sensation of death hovering above her for the first time. She slowly let go of the shirt with a nervous smile on her face. Drary could only look from the side, contemplating his next moves, one that might not result in his concubine losing her head in the process.
With a slight nod from Lucas, Luther retracted his claws, stepped back and returned to Lucas' side silently like he barely moved. At this, Jake and I locked eyes and shared a smile.
“They remind me of us.” He mindlinked me.
“Yes, how long has it been since you lost your temper at the slightest provocation?” I questioned him.
“Last time I checked, you were the one always losing your temper while I had to clean a lot of your messes and help you hide the bodies.” Jake explained, pushing the blame back to me.
“We will continue this conversation later.”
Our attention returned back to the show before us. It wasn't just us who were watching. The other Alphas had stopped what they were doing and were also watching… no. The word should be accessing.
Oh no
Without realizing it, Drary had caught the attention of all the Alphas and only a decent show of power would help him have a better future, if not, he would be ripped apart on the spot- figuratively I mean.
“How dare you raise your claws at her??” He directed his fury to the one who he perceived to be weaker. Luther.
Wrong choice.
He actually just made a mistake by challenging a sleeping wolf in its own territory.
Gwendolyn leaned into his arms, her expression was pitiful and with her decent appearance, she might just be successful in tugging the hearts of some Alphas who might side with her. “I'm sorry, I didn't mean to -”
Before she could complete her words, there was a loud tear. Lucas had torn off the side of the shirt where she held onto. “There is nothing to be sorry about.” He coldly glared at her, prepared to leave once again.
“Don't you dare try to hurt her-”
“Or what would you do?” Lucas interrupted his threats halfway without even turning back.
“You would understand why we are the strongest pack in the south.” Drary responded with a hint of pride in his voice.
“With what power? Just yours? Do you even have the ability to command the warriors here? I wonder whether they would even submit to you if your father wasn't here.”
“Why wouldn't they? I am the future alpha of this pack so they have to listen to me.” Brian continued in his attempt to save face for himself.
Lucas broke into another round of laughter. “Delusions at their peak. I respect your father so much and trust me, everyone here has seen a hint of what he can do and some of the rumors about him definitely have some truth to them. But what about you?” He slowly turned around to look at Drary. I caught the expression of worship on his face.
“Looks like you've got a fan. A fanatic one.” Jake mindlinked me.
“At your age, Alpha Axel was already singlehandedly going on rampage against rogues and he remained undefeated for a very very long time. He has an endless winning streak but you, you're trying to hide behind the glory of his name and you expect men who have fought various wars, conquered territories to submit to someone that is still wet behind the ears?? Absurd.”
Jake and I shared a look, that one look reminded us of all the golden days where we were so reckless.
