When Monsters Meet Again 2

When Monsters Meet Again 2

“Hello, Damian,” Valentina said, and the word was a blade. “I knew you’d come. I knew you were not dead.”

I stepped forward and the gun moved with me an extension of a muscle that had learned its work in darker rooms. “Let her go,” I said. The words were flat and small, the kind you hear after everything else has been used up.

Valentina’s laugh cracked the quiet like a snapped wire. Moonlight slid across her face and made her eyes into knives. “Is that how you greet an old friend?” she asked, voice silk over steel. She tilted her head, studying me the way you study a wound to see if it’s still bleeding. “You should be grateful I let you walk away the last time, Damian. And now you come to take my daughter.”

Her words fell like salt. Something ancient and animal beneath my ribs answered with a low growl. Memories I’d smothered a table left empty, a photograph folded into a pocket rose hot and bitter. “You’re saying I should be happy that you killed my father?” The question ripped out of me raw; the sound of it surprised me. “Happy?” Her shrug was casual, as if murder were a small inconvenience.

The gun tightened in my hand until my knuckles were pale. Each breath felt like pulling a rope through a narrow hole.

She closed the distance between us slow, deliberate, as if she enjoyed making me watch. The child in the chair blinked once, slow as a tired clock. When the light caught her face I felt it like a slap the same stubborn set to the jaw, the same angry little crease above one eye. My mouth went dry.

Valentina’s voice dropped to a whisper that smelled of old promises. “I should have taken her,” she said. “But we’re expecting a visitor.”

The sentence was a match struck in a dry room. My chest locked as if the air had thickened; the world narrowed to the yellow halo of the lamp and the faint shuffle of boots in the floorboards. A name crawled out from the dark of my memory and settled there like a stone: Vincent.

“What do you mean?” The question was small because a different thing was already forming in my head not a question but a bruise. I tasted iron on the back of my tongue.

Valentina’s smile widened the way a knife widens a seam. “Someone you tried to dispose of,” she said, the words soft as a secret. “Someone you thought gone. Vincent will be here soon.”

The pistol in my hand suddenly felt absurdly heavy, as if gravity had remembered me and decided to apply. Time hiccupped a heartbeat that stretched and the house exhaled around us: the faint click of a radio in another room, the hush of my men pressed to the walls like shadows, the child’s shallow, uneven breaths.

Vincent. Four years of silence unfolded into a single, dangerous promise.

I tightened my grip until the leather creaked. The decision sat in my throat like lead. Whether his arrival would be a rescue or the beginning of a funeral, I couldn’t tell. Only one thing was certain: whatever came through that door, I would burn for the child seated in that chair.
