Chapter 49 Battle Won

Chapter 49 Battle Won
DANNI’S POV

The chains hit the ground with a metallic scream. For a heartbeat, everything went still. Then—The room lunged. Vampires rushed from every side, fast enough to blur—but not fast enough.

Not anymore.

I saw them.

Every movement carved in sharp clarity. Every attack telegraphed. My body moved before thought could catch up. I Duck. I Twist. I Strike.

My hand snapped out, catching one by the wrist mid-lunge. I didn’t know how I knew what to do—I just did. I turned with the motion, using his momentum against him—and slammed him into the stone hard enough to crack it. Shock flickered across his face.

Mine too, honestly. No time to dwell. Another came from behind—I spun, instincts screaming—I used my Claws. Not fully But close.

My nails tore across his chest, ripping fabric, skin—He hissed, stumbling back.

Holy—Focus.

The white wolf surged through me, not taking over—guiding.

Left. Left again and then down.

I dropped low just as something whistled over my head.

Now.

I drove forward, shoulder slamming into a body, knocking him into another. They went down in a tangle of limbs and fury. A laugh burst out of me—wild, breathless, a little feral.

“Oh my god,” I gasped. “I’m actually doing this.”

LUKA

She was magnificent.

I registered it in flashes. These flashes came between acts of violence. She was not fragile. She was not overwhelmed. She was fighting. She was adapting.

A wild, bright pride ignited in my chest.

Then someone tried to grab her from the blind side. That feeling burned into something else.

Rage.

My hand, slick with sweat, clamped around his surprisingly cool throat. With a sickening crunch, I slammed him into the gritty, cold earth and It was done.

I didn’t even look at the body. My gaze flicked to Danni, checking—She was still moving. Still standing.

Good.

Two more figures lunged, their shadows dancing in the dim light. I met their charge head-on, the metallic tang of adrenaline sharp in my throat. The clang of steel meeting steel echoed, followed by a sickening thud as the first one crumpled. A second, swifter thrust, and the chilling resistance of flesh gave way as I passed through. No wasted motion, the air thick and heavy around me. No hesitation, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs. But this wasn’t just a fight anymore; it was a cold, brutal dance.

The musky scent of the creatures we fought hung around covering the scent of blood. Beneath the flickering gaslight, shadows danced like wraiths, making it hard to discern friend from foe. A guttural snarl echoed in the cave as Danni spun to the right. I mirrored her, my own boots scraping against the grimy cobblestones as I moved left, the rough wool of my tunic brushing against my skin. The thwack of a blade meeting something solid rang out as I intercepted a vampire lunging at Danni's exposed flank. A moment later, a chilling hiss erupted behind me, and I felt the cold rush of air as another attacker tried to slip past. Danni, a blur of motion, met it with a sharp, decisive grunt, teeth bared in the sudden quiet. It was a dance, as natural and silent as breathing.

Like they’d done this a hundred times before.

DANNI

“Behind you!” I yelled. He didn’t even look. Just moved, as if he’d known it was coming. A smile touched my lips, even with everything going on.

“Show-off.”

“Focus,” he shot back, but there was something lighter in his voice now. Something alive. I ducked another strike, breath coming fast but steady.

They were adapting. Learning. But so were we.

One of them came at me faster and stronger than the rest. I barely blocked the hit, my arms screaming from the impact as I slid back across the stone.

That one mattered. He lunged again. Then he stopped. He was mid-motion.

Luka’s hand slammed into his chest, halting him like he’d hit a wall.

“Like I’d let you touch her,” Luka said quietly. Then he ended it. I blinked.

“…Remind me never to piss you off.”

LUKA

I said, "You won't." I knew why. Something deeper had already decided it.

A shift in the room pulled his attention.

The calm one. He was still standing, still watching. He wasn't afraid. That was about to change.

“You’ve made your point,” the vampire said, almost conversationally. “But you’re still in our territory.”

I stepped forward.

My power now flowed unrestrained. The Prince, the Predator, the Executioner.

The vampire’s gaze flicked to Danni. Calculating.

Wrong move.

My voice dropped.

“If you even think about touching her again—”

“Or what?” the vampire cut in smoothly.

“Just Try.”

DANNI

The air shifted again, but this time it wasn't fear. It was... alignment. I stepped up beside Luka, not behind him. Not protected.

With him.

The white wolf surged again, stronger and clearer, as if it could finally breathe.

Together.

I didn't question it, I didn't hesitate.

“Let’s finish this,” I said, my voice steadier than I felt.

Luka looked at me. It was a real look. I saw his expression change. He showed respect. He showed approval. There was something more, too.

“Stay close,” he said.

I smirked.

“Keep up.”

We moved at the same time. It wasn't planned. We didn't count on it. We just knew. Luka went high. I went low.

He broke through the front line. I cut off their retreat.

Power clashed against power, the room shaking under the force of it. The symbols on the ground flickered wildly, destabilizing under the strain.

The calm one moved. It was fast. It was precise. It was dangerous.

He surged towards me, a blur of motion. Naturally. I surged forward to meet him, a collision of raw power. The impact was sharp, a jolt that vibrated through my bones, yet controlled. He was undeniably stronger, his muscles bunching with a power I hadn't felt before. And in his eyes, a glint of calculation – he was smarter, too.

But I wasn’t alone. Luka hit him from the side—not to finish him, but to disrupt. To create an opening. I took it. Instinct took over.

Claws out to Strik. The white wolf surged—And for a split second—I felt her fully.

Power roared through me, wild and blinding.

The vampire staggered.

That was enough.

Luka finished it.

Silence descended, thick and heavy, punctuated only by our ragged breaths. Bodies lay strewn across the floor. The symbols had faded. The ritual, unfinished.

It wasn't complete, nor was it successful. I swayed slightly as my adrenaline crashed. Luka was there instantly, steadying me.

“Hey,” he said, softer now. “Stay with me.”

“I am,” I breathed, though my body felt like it might give out.

But I was standing. We both were. And we were still here.

Together.

But—

Deeper in the shadows, something moved. I sensed it. It watched, and it waited.
