Chapter 19 Whispers

Chapter 19 Whispers

Third Person POV

Three days had passed since Luceila shifted for the first time.

Three days of training sessions with Dr. Chen, of learning to breathe through the humming beneath her skin, of trying to coexist with the wolf inside her without losing herself in the process.

Three days of navigating a household that didn't quite know how to treat her.

She was in the kitchen making tea when she heard them.

Female voices, hushed and urgent, drifting through the slightly open window above the sink.

"...she actually shifted? In their basement?"

"That's what I heard. Apparently she's been living with them for months without anyone knowing what she was."

Luceila froze, her fingers wrapped around her mug.

"A dormant wolf. Can you imagine? Twenty-two years and never shifted once. She must be feral."

Laughter followed.

She moved carefully toward the window, peering through the curtain without disturbing it. Two girls stood in the driveway, both beautiful, both immaculately dressed like they'd walked straight off a magazine cover. One had dark red hair and the  other was blonde, with the kind of casual confidence that came from never once being questioned.

Luceila didn't recognize either of them.

"She has no idea how pack dynamics work," the redhead said, examining her nails. "No training, no lineage, no control. She's basically a liability to everyone around her."

"Reis won't see it that way," the blonde replied. "You know how protective he gets."

"Reis doesn't have to know what we're planning." The redhead's smile turned sharp and deliberate. "By the time we're done, little Luceila will be running back to wherever she came from."

Luceila's blood ran cold.

"What exactly are we planning, Sera?" the blonde asked.

"We start small," Sera, the redhead said smoothly. "Reputation. In our world, a wolf without control is dangerous and unpredictable. All we have to do is make sure the right people hear the right things." She tilted her head elegantly. "A few whispers about her stepbrothers harboring an unstable wolf. A couple of carefully placed rumors about incidents that may or may not have happened."

"And if that doesn't work?"

"Then we escalate." Sera's gaze drifted briefly toward the house, and Luceila pressed herself flat against the wall, barely breathing. "One way or another, she won't last here. They don’t need a stray disrupting everything."

"What about the brothers?" the blonde asked. "Silas seems like he's already…."

"Silas is too soft," Sera dismissed. "And Reis has been distracted lately. By the time any of them realize what's happening, it'll be far too late to undo the damage we've done."

They moved away, their voices fading into the afternoon air, leaving Luceila pressed against the kitchen wall with a pounding heart and shaking hands.

Someone was already planning to destroy her reputation. Someone who knew about her emergence, who knew the brothers, who moved in their world with enough confidence to stand in their driveway like she owned it.

The front door opened minutes later, and Silas appeared, shaking off his jacket. He stopped immediately when he saw Luceila's expression.

"What's wrong?" His eyes scanned the room on instinct.

"Who is Sera?" Luceila asked.

Something flickered across his face. "Where did you hear that name?"

"She was outside. With a blonde girl. They were talking about me." Luceila watched him carefully. "Talking about destroying my reputation before I've even had a chance to build one."

Silas's jaw tightened visibly. "What exactly did you hear?"

"Enough." She crossed her arms. "Who is she?"

He was quiet for a moment, the kind of quiet that meant he was deciding how much to share.

"Sera Blackwood," he said finally. "Alpha's daughter. Blackwood pack."

Blackwood. The name triggered something. she'd heard the brothers mention them before, in hushed tones that suggested history and bad blood.

"She has history with your pack," Luceila said slowly.

"She has ambitions," Silas corrected. "Sera has been positioning herself within pack politics for years. A newly emerged wolf with unknown heritage changes the equation significantly."

"How?"

He hesitated. "There are those who believe a dormant wolf carries extraordinary power once fully emerged. If that's true for you…"

"Then I'm a threat to whatever she's building," Luceila finished quietly.

"Or a pawn," he said. "Someone others might use against us. Which is why you cannot engage with her directly. Don't let her know you heard anything today."

"You want me to do nothing?" The frustration rose hot in her chest. "While she plots against me?"

"I want you to be smart about this," Silas said firmly. "Sera has been playing pack politics since she could walk. You've been a wolf for three days. Direct confrontation is exactly what she wants. She'd dismantle you before you even finished speaking."

Every instinct Luceila had, human and wolf screamed to fight back. To find Sera and tell her exactly what she thought.

But he was right. She wasn't ready.

"Fine," she said tightly. "I'll stay out of it. For now."

Silas nodded. "Good."

"But I want to know everything about her. Her pack, her connections, what she actually wants." Luceila met his gaze. "No more keeping me in the dark. If someone is coming after me, I deserve to know what I'm dealing with."

Silas studied her for a long moment, something unreadable moving behind his eyes.

"Agreed," he said quietly.

After he left the kitchen, Luceila pulled out her journal, writing with a steady hand despite everything:

Someone named Sera  wants me gone. She's planning something…rumors, reputation damage, whatever it takes to push me out. She doesn't know I heard her today. That's the only advantage I have.

I don't know this world. I don't know the rules. I don't know who to trust.

But I'm starting to learn.

She closed the journal, looking out the window at the empty driveway.

Sera had started something today without realizing it.

She'd underestimated Luceila.

That was her first mistake.

And Luceila would make sure she learnt the lesson of underestimating someone who Sera claimed was “weak”.
