CHAPTER 280
CHAPTER 280
“What are you… What do you mean? Did she go to the top for some air or what? I don't get it!” Nic rambled, words tumbling out of him as the information registered in our minds.
“No,” Dad Reed shook his head, “she was given the child as usual and suddenly someone reported that a witch was missing from the dungeon. We went to figure out what happened and we noticed her scent in the dungeon. She must have made everyone who saw her forget. We rushed to her room, and she was nowhere to be found. We've searched the entire station, there's no trace of her or Xander.”
My throat hurt from how much I wanted to cry but couldn't. I was in shock, and the guilt that dove into me was merciless, eating me up with claws of vengeance.
“There's more,” someone said, I didn't know who even though I knew everyone in the war room, “there's this video.”
I looked up immediately, watching Uncle Lavigne as he pressed something on the remote and a shiver passed through me at the familiar face of the vampire that was dedicated to ruining our lives.
“Hello son,” he smirked, “I'm sure by now you should have realized your son is missing. If not, well you're a more terrible father than I am,” he laughed, for a disturbing minute before he continued. He bent forward on the pretentiously decorated throne he did press briefings on and they zoomed into his face. “I'm not sure you understand how much power I have in my hands right now. Every single species that matter, every bloodline that has been wrapped in power for the last ten thousand millennia is represented in this boy's blood. For the next few weeks, while you run around destroying what your precious humans died while building, I'll be testing, prodding, and manipulating every power in his veins. You don't know where I am, you won't find me no matter how hard you try, and when I'm ready, I'll come for you. I may not have a son that wants to stay by my side but I'll have power that crushes planets and makes me the most feared being in existence. Of course, it gives me great pleasure to know you'll also know how it feels to have a son who can't be by your side. Toodles,” he finished, laughter shooting out of him as he relaxed on the chair again.
The camera moved back and that's when I saw him, my son.
He was in the arms of one of the witches they'd captured and she had her filthy fingers in his mouth.
It was obvious he didn't like the blood she was feeding him but she was adamant, forcing her hands into his mouth.
A tear sprang free with force from my eyes and a dam broke behind my eyes.
I didn't know who caught me as I fell, and I didn't cry like I used to.
A strange, mangled sob poured out of me for what seemed like an eternity. I lost touch with reality and everything was just… too much.
But in that moment, my hand was taken by my mate's own and he squeezed.
I looked up at him, seeing something in him that I've been feeling in my soul since we began this war.
“We'll get him,” my mom whispered into my ear as she rubbed circles on my back but I wasn't listening.
I was looking for a way out of this pain and the darkness whispered, opening its arms for me to get in and rest.
I looked at my mate again and he nodded, a flicker of recognition in his eyes.
And with that, I simply let go.
I let myself go. I let my pain go; the guilt, the shame, the frustration.
The pain.
And I felt warm, dark, and fuzzy clouds wrap themselves around my heart, whispering promises and soothing words of encouragement. It was strange, I had thought the darkness was a painful, invasive thing but no, she just wants to help.
And I needed all the help I could get
My mom handed me over to my mate who was on the ground with me and I curled up into his arms, breathing as he squeezed me into his hold.
Slowly, I felt my heart swallowed by the darkness and suddenly my eyes opened again, and I inhaled deeply, like I was waking up from death.
Wordlessly, and with the tears gone from our eyes, we got up.
Immediately, the door burst open and Kelly ran into the war room and looked at me.
The sign was subtle, but I knew what had changed in me even though I wasn't ready to accept it yet. I wanted to keep believing I was still the same person.
“I'm too late,” she gasped, “what have you done Elly?” She cried, pulling me into her arms.
“What's happening? What is going on?? Can somebody speak up?!” Loud voices screamed from behind us.
Kelly moved back from the unreturned hug and with a strength that surprised me, turned me around to face everyone.
“Elly's gone!” She exclaimed, “This is a soldier of the sun god and a death bringer!”
“A what?” The woman who gave birth to me gasped. She might not know what it was but she could tell she wouldn't like it.
“They were the first vampires and they are extinct for a reason,” King Reed explained to his mate, staring at me with hesitation. “Look at their eyes.”
“Just like in the vision,” King Lucien added, the three of them looking at each other.
“Let's go,” Nicolai whispered to me, our mission crystal clear in our heads. There was no separation between our minds, we thought the same thoughts but spoke in turns. One source but two outlets.
“Go to where?” The queen snapped, “We're going right now to rescue your child but you both are going to sit down in your rooms until we get back!”
“I'm sorry Your Majesty but you can't go either,” Kelly spoke up, a tremble in her voice.
At least she was bugging someone else.
“Why the fuck not? You expect me to sit here while that sadistic bastard dissects my grandson like he did his own child?!”
“You have to. You're a superior version of them. A Mother. You've been able to keep it under control for so long and you're the only hope we have of getting them back as well. If you go into that war, you might not come back the same.”
I took a step back as they began arguing with themselves, the seer trying to make them realize what they really knew was the truth within them.
But we didn't see the need to watch their squabbles.
We have a mission to accomplish and no one will be able to stop us.
