Chapter 182
Chapter 182
"How do we find it?" Becky had considered this, but Nash was a criminal, and his words couldn't be fully trusted. And Angelina was the Sullivan family's precious daughter, and with Cornelius...
Some things were hard to say before Elizabeth.
But their unusual relationship was already common knowledge. If anything happened, Cornelius would definitely protect Angelina.
"Elizabeth, I'm just worried about you."
She didn’t finish her sentence, but Elizabeth understood. "Worried about what? Worst case, Cornelius and I will divorce. That's what I want anyway."
Becky wanted to ask more, but in the end, she held back.
Still, Elizabeth caught that conflicted look and almost smiled. "What many people envy isn't necessarily good. Only those living it have the right to say whether it should continue."
"You're really going through with it?"
"Yes."
Becky studied Elizabeth carefully. Elizabeth had beautiful eyes—pupils like transparent glass beads. Deep within them was no hesitation or reluctance, only certainty. With that, Becky's worries finally eased. "Okay. As long as it won't hurt you, just tell me what to do and I'll do it."
Elizabeth wrapped an arm around Becky's shoulders. The shouting from the next room had stopped. Realizing no one would respond, Karena was changing tactics.
"Becky, I'm your mother. Come see me."
I’m scared being here alone. They're all bullying me. You were such a good girl when you were little. You always said when you grew up, you'd protect me, take care of me. Have you forgotten all that?"
Becky's heart felt like it was being carved with a knife.
Of course she hadn't forgotten. She never would. But her mother's actions made it impossible to approach her without reservations anymore.
Yet her mother's accusations were like demonic whispers she couldn't shake.
Until a pair of hands covered Becky's ears.
The world finally went quiet.
The police came to take her statement. Becky answered every question seriously, with Elizabeth beside her.
Elizabeth glanced toward the detention room.Maybe Karena was tired of shouting—she'd gone silent.
After finishing the statement, Elizabeth left with Becky.
As for Karena...
Though she was Becky’s mother, what she’d done violated the law.The only reason she hadn't been charged before was Becky's soft heart.
Outside the station, Becky looked back.
Elizabeth stopped her, forcing her to look forward. "The road ahead is long. What you need to do now is look forward, not back."
Becky obeyed immediately, suppressing the reluctance in her heart and walking forward with her head held high.
Whether it was Elizabeth's words or being heartbroken by her mother, Becky stopped feeling bad after getting in the car. Instead, she felt calm, her mind clearer than ever. Elizabeth, there’s one thing on my mind right now."
Elizabeth asked, "What's that?"
"Put Nash in prison."
Elizabeth smiled. "What a coincidence. I was thinking the same thing."
Just then, Elizabeth's phone rang. An unfamiliar number appeared on screen, but Elizabeth knew it well.
She'd spent countless days and nights seeing messages from this number.
Those photos could make her lose control, make her suspicious of her husband, keep her awake night after night.
"Elizabeth?"
Meeting Becky’s gaze, Elizabeth snapped back to herself and answered.
"Beth, it's me."
Angelina’s intimate tone made Elizabeth immediately uncomfortable. "If you have something to say, say it. Otherwise I'm hanging up."
Angelina sighed. "You really have no patience with me at all."
"I’m hanging up."
Elizabeth’s tone was cold. When she said she'd hang up, she meant it.
In her living room, Angelina sat on the sofa. Hearing those words, her expression darkened slightly, though her voice remained gentle as ever. "Don't you want to find out who went after Becky?"
Elizabeth didn't respond but didn't hang up either.
Angelina knew she wouldn't. She picked up her coffee and took a slow sip. "When I said it wasn't me, I meant it. I'm not lying. But I know who it was."
"Why should I believe you?"
"Then investigate yourself. I'll give you a lead. If you figure it out, that's to your credit." Angelina seemed unhurried. "But if you can't..."
Elizabeth cut in. "Why would you help me?"
"I don’t want you holding onto this and letting it affect my relationship with Cory."
Elizabeth glanced at Becky. There were some things she didn’t want to say in front of her. She took her phone and walked out to the balcony.
"If you really care about your relationship with him, tell him to hurry up and divorce me. Your baby's due soon, right?"
"I'm not in a rush. Not that soon. Four more months."
Elizabeth's lips curved coldly. "Give me the lead."
"I just sent it to your phone."
Elizabeth heard the notification sound. As she was about to hang up, Angelina suddenly added,
"Aren't you worried the lead is fake?"
Elizabeth's voice was cold. "Real or fake, I'll check myself."
With that, she hung up.
Behind her, Becky’s hesitant voice sounded.
"No." Elizabeth's answer was decisive, without a hint of hesitation.
"Then why would you..."
Elizabeth looked down at her phone. Hearing the question, she looked up at Becky, a faint smile playing on her lips. "Not trusting her is one thing. But since she's making a move, I need to see what game she's playing."
The lead was simple—just a room number.
And a text: [Tomorrow noon, 12 o'clock. If you want the truth, come to this private room.]
Becky saw it too, rubbing her chin thoughtfully. "Is this reliable? Could it be some kind of trap?"
"She wouldn't do that."
It wasn’t that she trusted Angelina; this tactic simply wouldn’t work. The call records and messages were all there. If something happened to her, Angelina wouldn’t be able to escape responsibility.
"So you're going?" Becky asked.
"Of course. Why wouldn't I?"
But she couldn't go alone.
Night.
Cornelius was supported by Mark as they emerged from the club, a faint smell of alcohol clinging to him. Somewhat worried, Mark helped him into the car.
Cornelius opened his eyes. They were completely clear.
Seeing that he wasn’t drunk, Mark relaxed."Mr. Glover is getting more and more outrageous. At tonight's dinner, he was clearly deliberately making things difficult for you..."
Otherwise Cornelius wouldn't have needed to drink so much.
Cornelius loosened his tie and rolled down the window. The breeze helped clear some of the alcoholic fog from his head.. "He's not happy."
Mark was silent for a long moment. "You're not happy either."
Cornelius's lips curved as his gaze fixed on the man walking out of the club entrance.
Ethan walked up to the car, looking down at Cornelius. "Mind giving me a ride?"
Mark really wanted to say it wasn't convenient.
But Cornelius opened the door.
Ethan got in, his fingers unconsciously stroking the watch on his wrist. "Going home alone? Your wife isn't picking you up?"
Cornelius glanced at him, recognizing the watch. It was a gift from Daisy.
It was many years old now. It had broken. It should have been replaced. But Ethan couldn't bear to.
"I don’t need her to pick me up."
"You're afraid of me seeing her." Ethan's phone rang. He looked down at it, smiled playfully, then gave Cornelius a meaningful look. "You protect her so carefully, but do you know what your wife's been up to lately?"
Cornelius frowned slightly. "What, you know?"
Ethan's fingers rubbed the darkened screen. "I'm meeting a client, tomorrow. Want to come along?"
