Chapter 21 up
Chapter 21 up
The rain roared over the English Channel, lashing against the windows of the vibrating old cargo plane as it battled the storm. Inside the dimly lit hold, Felicia sat atop a cold ammunition crate. Her left leg, no longer encased in the exoskeleton destroyed in the Alps, felt heavy and numb. She stared at it with deep resentment—a physical reminder that she had once been paralyzed and that her enemies had nearly succeeded in breaking her spirit.
Andre sat across from her, wiping the remaining blood from a wound on his temple. He hadn’t said much since they left the burning cabin. There was a profound sadness in his eyes, not for the loss of their sanctuary, but because the tenderness they had briefly rediscovered had evaporated, replaced by a coldness sharper than polar ice.
"Elena, how much longer until we land?" Felicia’s voice broke the silence, flat and emotionless.
Elena, busy with three laptops in the corner of the cargo hold, looked up. "Ten minutes until we enter East London airspace. The landing strip is an old, inactive private airfield belonging to the Suryo family. Mikhail Volkov has blocked all port and commercial airport access for anyone with the name Mahendra."
"Mikhail," Felicia repeated the name, tasting it like poison. "He thinks he can replace his brother by being more brutal. He thinks by destroying that cabin, he has won."
"He didn't just destroy the cabin, Felicia," Elena warned, her voice carrying a rare note of anxiety. "Mikhail has activated the 'Black Contract.' Every hitman in Europe now has our photo on their phone. The price on our heads is enough to buy a small island."
Andre stood, balancing himself against the plane's turbulence. He approached Felicia and knelt before her, exactly as he had during their romantic moment days ago. But this time, there was no chamomile tea or gentle massage.
"Felicia, listen to me," Andre gripped his wife’s hands. "London is a wolf's den. The Obsidian Circle has roots that run deep there, from the halls of Parliament to the underground security systems. We can’t attack them head-on like we did in Moscow. We need help."
"Help from whom, Andre? The Shadow Unit betrayed us. Your father is dead. We are alone," Felicia replied coldly.
"Not alone," Andre pulled out an old silver coin engraved with a rose entwined in thorns. "There is one man who owes his life to your mother, Ratna. His name is Silas 'The Butcher' Vane. He rules the East London underworld. He hates Obsidian because they tried to wipe out his organization ten years ago."
The plane took a sharp dive, landing with a violent jolt on a runway overgrown with tall grass and weeds. As the cargo door creaked open, the damp, cold London air bit through to the bone. They stepped out into a thick fog, greeted by the shadows of old industrial buildings looming like frozen giants.
The Meeting in the Black District
They moved through the narrow alleys of Whitechapel, avoiding the surveillance cameras scattered at every corner of the main streets. Felicia walked with the help of a steel cane modified by Elena—a cane that doubled as a high-voltage stun weapon. Every step was a battle against the burning pain in her spinal nerves, yet she refused to be carried.
At a grimy old pub with a crooked sign, Andre knocked on the heavy wooden door in a specific pattern. A small slit opened, revealing a pair of suspicious eyes. Upon seeing the silver coin in Andre’s hand, the door opened with a long groan.
Inside, the air was thick with cigar smoke and the smell of cheap ale. Dozens of men with neck tattoos and scarred faces stared at them hungrily. In the center of the room sat a giant of a man with a massive axe leaning against his chair. Silas Vane.
"The Mahendras and the Suryos walking into my lion's den?" Silas laughed, a sound like distant thunder. "You’ve either got massive balls, or you’ve finally gone mad."
"We bring the key to Mikhail Volkov’s destruction, Silas," Felicia said, stepping into the dim circle of a hanging lamp. "And we know you want his head more than anyone in this room."
Silas stood, nearly two meters tall. He approached Felicia, eyeing the backup exoskeleton faintly visible beneath her long jacket. "I heard about what you did in Moscow, Steel Lady. But London isn't Moscow. Mikhail has an elite squad called 'The Red Guard.' They don't use bullets; they use sonic frequencies that can liquefy your internal organs before you even pull the trigger."
"Then teach us how to beat them," Felicia challenged. "Give us access to the underground tunnels leading to The Shard, where Mikhail is holding the High Council meeting tomorrow night. In exchange, once Mikhail falls, all the food distribution routes he controls in the UK will be yours."
Silas fell silent for a moment, weighing the risks. The silence in the pub was so heavy it felt as if everyone was holding their breath. Finally, Silas extended a massive, calloused hand.
"For Ratna Suryo," Silas whispered. "We burn London tonight."
The Final Sabotage Plan
In the pub’s basement, now converted into a command center, Elena began dissecting The Shard’s security system. The skyscraper was the symbol of Obsidian Circle’s power in Europe.
"Mikhail will be on the 72nd floor," Elena explained, pointing to a blue holographic map. "He won't be alone. Three other High Council members will be present to formalize the total takeover of the Mahendra Group. If we successfully blow their main servers there, all the assets they stole will return to a permanent 'frozen' status."
"What about 'The Red Guard'?" Andre asked, checking his new sniper rifle.
"I have a solution," Elena pulled out several small devices that looked like earbuds. "These are active frequency dampeners. They’ll create a 'silent zone' around you. But the range is only three meters. That means you two must stay close during the assault."
Felicia looked at Andre. Inner conflict raged in her heart. She wanted Andre safe, yet she knew that without him, she couldn't penetrate the 72nd floor. On the other hand, Andre’s presence was her weakness—because Mikhail would surely use him to pressure her.
"Felicia," Andre touched her shoulder, as if reading her mind. "Don't think about protecting me. Think about our baby. Think about every child in the orphanage who has no future because of these people. Tonight, we aren't just husband and wife. We are the storm that will sweep this filth away."
Felicia nodded slowly. "Get a few hours of sleep. Tomorrow night, the world will see how a dynasty built on blood collapses by that very same blood."
Betrayal at Midnight
However, fate never allowed Felicia to rest. At two in the morning, a motion sensor alarm chirped on Elena’s tablet.
"Someone’s entered our tunnel!" Elena shouted.
Suddenly, one of Silas’s men stumbled in with a gunshot wound to his stomach. "Silas... he... he sold us out! Mikhail offered a full pardon for his organization if he handed over your heads!"
Chaos erupted. The pub door above them was blown open. 'The Red Guard' began rappelling down, firing tear gas and frequency grenades. A high-pitched screeching sound immediately filled the room, forcing Andre and Elena to their knees as their ears began to bleed.
Felicia, thanks to the frequency dampeners already integrated into her new exoskeleton, was the only one still standing. She saw Silas Vane enter through the back door, gripping his axe with a face full of cold regret.
"Forgive me, girl," Silas said to Felicia. "In London, loyalty is only as strong as the offer on the table. Mikhail gave me something you couldn't: survival for my people."
"You’re wrong, Silas," Felicia hissed, her eyes ablaze with overflowing rage. "You just signed your own death warrant."
Felicia didn't wait for Elena's instructions. She lunged at Silas with full hydraulic power. A battle between a giant axe and steel hands broke out in the London underground. Silas swung his axe with enough force to split stone, but Felicia was swifter. She used the walls and concrete pillars to leap, delivering a barrage of kicks to Silas’s joints.
Simultaneously, Andre managed to activate a backup frequency dampener and began returning fire at the entering 'Red Guard.'
"Elena! Take the data and get to the evacuation route!" Andre ordered.
"I’m not leaving you!" Elena shouted, firing back.
The fight became absolute mayhem. Felicia managed to catch the blade of Silas’s axe with her metallic hand, the screeching sound of metal on metal filling the room. With one powerful wrench, she snapped the axe handle and slammed her forehead into Silas’s, knocking the giant unconscious.
"Andre! This way!" Felicia pulled Andre toward a sewage outlet leading to the River Thames.
They ran through the darkness, pursued by bursts of gunfire and the wailing sirens of the London police. At the end of the tunnel, they plunged into the cold, murky river water, swimming toward a small boat Elena had prepared as a last-resort contingency.
As they climbed into the boat, Felicia panted, her body trembling from exhaustion and pain. She looked back at The Shard looming in the distance, its lights appearing like a demon's eye watching over the city.
"They know we’re here," Andre whispered, trying to warm Felicia with an emergency blanket.
"Let them know," Felicia replied, her voice as sharp as a blade.
"Because tomorrow, that tower is coming down."
