Chapter 200
Chapter 200
The lake water was colder than Alexander expected, shocking his system as he plunged in. His lungs burned and his muscles screamed in protest, but the instinct for self-preservation was overwhelmed by fear and desperation. The weight of his soaked clothes dragged him down as he swam frantically toward where Morgan had disappeared.
"Please, please," he begged silently to whatever god might be listening.
The murky water stung his eyes as he dove beneath the surface. Darkness enveloped him, the afternoon sun barely penetrating the depths. His arms swept through the water, fingers spread wide, searching, hoping. Each second stretched into eternity as panic clawed at his chest.
Then—a whisper of fabric against his fingertips.
Alexander grabbed hold, feeling the soft material of Morgan's dress. He pulled her toward him, wrapping his arm around her waist, and kicked upward with every ounce of strength he had left. His lungs were screaming, spots dancing before his eyes, but all he could think was, Don't leave me, don't leave me.
They broke the surface together. Alexander gasped desperately for air, but Morgan remained limp in his arms, her face ashen, lips tinged blue.
"No, no, no," he choked out, swimming backward toward shore while keeping her head above water. The distance seemed impossible, but fear gave him strength he didn't know he possessed.
When his feet finally touched bottom, Alexander dragged Morgan onto the shore, laying her gently on the ground. She wasn't breathing. Her skin was cold and pale, her lips a frightening shade of blue.
Terror like he had never known seized Alexander's heart. "Morgan," he pleaded, voice breaking. "Please, don't do this."
He positioned his hands over the center of her chest and began compressions. "One, two, three, four..." he counted mechanically, tears mingling with lake water on his face. Between sets, he tilted her head back, pinched her nose, and breathed into her mouth, willing his breath to become hers.
"Come back to me," he begged between breaths. "Emma needs you. I need you... I've always needed you."
His movements were both desperate and methodical, each compression a plea, each breath a prayer. Blood from his self-inflicted arm wound smeared across her pale skin, but he didn't stop. Couldn't stop.
"Please, Morgan. Our daughter needs her mother." His voice cracked. "I've failed you so many times, but please, don't let me fail at this."
As if responding to his plea, Morgan suddenly convulsed, her body arching as water spewed from her mouth. Alexander quickly turned her onto her side, supporting her as she coughed violently, expelling lake water from her lungs.
When she finally opened her eyes, the first thing she saw was Alexander's tear-streaked face. He was soaked through, a gash on his forehead bleeding freely, his arm covered in blood that the lake water had failed to wash away completely.
"Alexander?" Her voice was barely a whisper, confusion clouding her eyes.
He pulled her into his arms, holding her as if she might disappear again. "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry," he sobbed, rocking her gently. "This is all my fault. I should have protected you. I should have told you the truth."
Morgan's mind was foggy, struggling to make sense of what was happening. Then a fragment of memory returned—Alexander's desperate scream as she walked into the lake.
"Emma..." she murmured, her voice breaking. "You said Emma is..." She couldn't finish, afraid to hope.
Alexander cradled her face in his hands, looking directly into her eyes. "Emma is our daughter, Morgan. She didn't die. She's alive—very much alive and healthy. After... after the accident, she was born premature, but she survived. It was a miracle."
Morgan's expression transformed from confusion to shock to disbelieving hope. "My baby... is alive?" Her trembling fingers reached up to touch Alexander's face, making sure this wasn't some hallucination before death claimed her.
"Yes," he nodded emphatically, tears flowing freely. "We thought your condition couldn't handle the truth, so... God, we were wrong, Morgan. But now, we can be together, all of us. We can be a family. We'll be okay, I promise."
Rapid footsteps and voices broke through the quiet of the lakeside. Liam was the first to emerge from the trees, followed by Lilith who was holding the hand of a small girl. Jonathan trailed close behind.
Liam stopped short at the sight of them, relief washing over his face. "Thank God you found her."
Morgan's gaze shifted to Emma, and her heart seemed to stop. This was her child—her flesh and blood, the little life she thought she had lost forever. So real, so beautiful, it almost hurt to look at her.
"Emma..." Morgan couldn't finish, her voice failing her.
The little girl hesitated, looking up at Lilith for permission. When Lilith nodded encouragingly, she took a tentative step forward, then another. Her pace quickened until she was running toward them.
"Mommy!" she called out, the simple word thundering through Morgan's soul like lightning.
Morgan extended trembling arms, carefully embracing Emma as if she were made of the most delicate porcelain. "My baby... my baby..." she sobbed, unable to form complete sentences as overwhelming joy and love crashed through her.
Alexander wrapped his arms around both of them, creating a circle of warmth and protection. Emma giggled between them, her innocent voice like music. "Daddy and Mommy together! Daddy and Mommy together!"
In that moment, the years of pain and separation seemed to dissolve. Morgan held her daughter—her daughter—feeling the solid warmth of her, hearing her heartbeat, breathing in her scent. It was more healing than she could have imagined possible.
As Morgan's shock began to subside, she noticed Liam and Lilith standing nearby, their hands unconsciously intertwined. Lilith hadn't pulled away; instead, she was squeezing Liam's hand, her eyes still fixed on the reunited family.
"I should have believed you," Liam said quietly to Lilith. "About Morgan, about everything. I was too stubborn."
Lilith shook her head. "We all had our reasons. But maybe now... we can start over?"
They exchanged a smile, three years of estrangement melting away like ice in the sun.
When emotions had calmed slightly, Alexander gently released his embrace and reached into the pocket of his soaked suit jacket. He pulled out a small, waterlogged velvet box and opened it carefully. Despite its bath in the lake, the ring inside still sparkled brilliantly.
Kneeling on one knee, Alexander's voice trembled with emotion. "Morgan, I know I'm far from perfect. I've made countless mistakes and hurt you in ways I can never fully atone for. But I swear, from this moment forward, I will protect you and Emma with my life. I will spend every day making up for the past. Will you marry me?"
Morgan looked to Emma, seeking some kind of confirmation. The little girl jumped excitedly. "Mommy say YES! Mommy say YES! Daddy and Mommy together!"
Everyone laughed, including Jonathan, whose eyes shimmered with tears of relief and joy.
Morgan gazed deeply into Alexander's eyes—those blue eyes that had once broken her heart and that she had never been able to forget. She extended her left hand, her voice soft but certain.
"Yes, I will."
