chapter 191 The Vampires Seek Peace

chapter 191 The Vampires Seek Peace
Lyra's POV

The vampire convoy that brought Eric and Kane back to our territory moved like a funeral procession. I watched from the medical tent as they approached.

The events leading to their capture had reached us through Cassius's scouts. After Eric's desperate escape to Celeste's grave, he had collapsed from blood loss and exhaustion beside her corpse, clutching her decaying form as consciousness abandoned him. The vampire tracking teams had found him there at dawn, unconscious and near death from his self-inflicted amputation.

Eric was barely recognizable now. His right arm ended in a crude bandage where his hand had been, the makeshift tourniquet stained with dried blood. The burn scars that covered half his face were fully exposed without his usual mask, the melted flesh a twisted ruin of scar tissue.

Kane walked beside him, his head held high despite the silver shackles around his wrists. Even in defeat, Eric's second-in-command maintained his dignity.

As the convoy passed through our lines, werewolves who had lost friends and family in Eric's war began to gather.

Someone spat at Eric's feet. Then another. Soon a chorus of angry voices filled the air.

"Traitor!"

"Monster!"

"How many of our children did you kill?"

Eric stumbled under the weight of their hatred, his remaining hand pressed against his ruined face. Kane steadied him, whispering something I couldn't hear.

Good. He should feel their hatred. Because of him, Kieran was dead. Because of him, Caleb would never see another sunrise. Because of him, thousands of families were torn apart by grief.

Three days later, Cassius arrived with formal terms for the peace treaty. The vampire leader was all business, his pale eyes betraying no emotion as he outlined the agreement.

"Fifty years of non-aggression," he announced to the assembled council. "No vampire will enter werewolf territory, no werewolf will enter ours. Any violations will be met with immediate retaliation."

Dorian reviewed the documents carefully. "And in exchange?"

"We consider Eric's delivery sufficient compensation for the destruction caused by his war. Our clans will not seek further revenge. Additionally, we relinquish all claims to the territories currently occupied by werewolf forces. Consider them permanent additions to your domain."

Just like that, months of bloodshed ended with signatures on parchment. The war that had cost so many lives was over.

A month passed in a blur of trials and tribunals. Eric's fate had been decided by the High Council in a closed session that lasted three days. I wasn't present for the proceedings, but the news traveled quickly.

Death by bone extraction. The most agonizing execution method in werewolf law, reserved for traitors who had caused massive loss of life.

All of Eric's top lieutenants received the same sentence. Vera was appointed as the new Alpha.

I found myself at Eric's holding cell the night before his execution. I wasn't sure why I'd come. Part of me wanted to see him suffer the way he'd made so many others suffer. Part of me wanted answers about why he'd chosen to destroy so many lives.

He looked up when I entered, his eye focusing on me with difficulty. Without any covering, the burn damage was horrific to witness.

"Lyra," he said quietly. "I wondered if you'd come."

"I don't know why I'm here," I admitted.

"To see the monster without his disguise?" Eric gestured to his ruined face with his remaining hand. "This is what I really am. What I've always been underneath."

Kane sat in the corner of the cell, his own execution scheduled for the following morning. When Eric began to speak, Kane immediately interjected.

"My Alpha," Kane said, his voice strong despite everything, "you should save your strength."

"For what? We'll be dead in twelve hours." Eric's laugh was bitter. "Kane, I need you to know – I tried to negotiate for your life. I told them you were just following orders."

Kane's expression didn't change. "I would have refused any mercy that you weren't granted. My loyalty isn't conditional, Eric. It never has been."

"Even now? After everything I've put you through? After leading our pack to destruction?"

"Especially now." Kane's voice carried absolute conviction. "An Alpha's darkest hour is when loyalty matters most. I followed you into hell, and I'll follow you out of this world. That's what brotherhood means."

Eric closed his eyes. "You deserved a better Alpha."

"I chose my Alpha," Kane replied simply. "No regrets."

I left them there, these two men who would die together at dawn. Whatever Eric had become, Kane's loyalty was absolute and unshakeable. There was something both beautiful and tragic about that devotion.

The execution took place at sunrise, as was traditional. I didn't attend, but I heard the howls that marked their passing echo across the territory.

Two days later, a package arrived at our estate. Vera had sent it, along with a formal note explaining its origin.

Inside was a leather-bound journal, its pages filled with Eric's careful handwriting.

Vera's note read: "During the peace negotiations, Cassius presented this journal as part of the intelligence exchange between our territories. It contains secrets about him that shocked me deeply. I thought you might want to see it."

I set the journal aside for weeks, unsure if I wanted to read Eric's thoughts. The war was over, justice had been served. What more was there to understand?

But on the night before the Werewolf World Alliance's victory celebration, I found myself alone with Eric's journal. The leather cover had been worn smooth from frequent handling, and some of the pages were stained with what appeared to be tears.

I turned to the first entry and started reading.
