CHAPTER EIGHTY.
ROSALIE'S POV.
Briana's words made me halt. I frowned, searching her face for any hidden meaning but found nothing but her mock, "What are you talking about?" I demanded.
Briana's smile widened. "Oh, come now, Rosalie. Don't tell me you don't feel it. Something… out of place. Something… wrong. Simple."
My heart skipped a beat, but I kept my expression neutral. I didn't want to give her the satisfaction of knowing she had rattled me.
I let her words sink in, trying to decipher their meaning. I glanced around the hallway, searching for anything out of the ordinary. But everything seemed normal.
The guards were in position, the prisoners were secured, and the pack house was as it should be. Everywhere was as it was.
I sighed, 'She must be bluffing.'
"You're wasting your breath," I said, my tone cold. "Whatever game you're playing, it won't work."
Briana's eyes gleamed with a wicked twisting brightness. "Aren't your children in the human world? Or… don't tell me you don't feel any discomfort."
Her words hit me like a hurricane, and for a moment, I couldn't breathe. My children. My pups. My mind raced as I took a step toward her, my body tense with barely contained rage.
'How did she know about them?' I wondered.
"What did you just say?" I hissed, my voice low and dangerous. Underneath those laid fright. I was undoubtedly afraid.
Briana chuckled darkly. She knew she had gotten me right where she needed me, "Oh, so you do remember them. For a moment, I thought you had forgotten all about your precious little ones."
Before I could stop myself, I lunged forward, my hand wrapping around her throat. The guards moved to intervene, but I shot them a look that froze them in place. My grip tightened as I glared into her smug face.
"What have you done?" I growled, my voice trembling with fury and I slammed her on the wall. "How do you know about my children?"
Briana's smile didn't falter. If anything, it grew more brighter but difficult. "W.... Wouldn't you like to know?" She gagged.
I tightened my grip, my nails digging into her skin.
"Answer me now, or you will be sorry!" My wolf was roaring now, her fury merging with mine as we stared down the woman who dared to threaten what was most precious to us.
Briana's eyes gleamed with triumph, even as her breathing grew laboured. "You should be thanking me," She rasped. "After all, I've given you something to think about."
My mind raced, torn between wanting to crush the life out of her and needing answers. 'How did she know? How could she possibly know about them? And more importantly, what had she and her confrere done to them?'
The sight of her blood ticking down her neck broke through my haze of fury. I released Briana with a shove, watching as she slumped against the wall, coughing but still smirking.
"We're not done," I said, my voice icy. Turning to the guards, I barked, "Lock her up. Double the security. And make sure she doesn't get another chance to pull a stunt like this."
The guards moved quickly, hauling Briana to her feet. She didn't resist, but her mocking laughter followed me as I turned, and I knew I couldn't leave just like that. 'What if she's serious?'
She couldn't just come up with topics about my children without anything. Could she?
I needed answers. And I needed them now.
I turned to her again, ready to shred her apart for more clues, but she beat me to it, she turned her head just enough to look at me over her shoulder, her expression twisted with satisfaction.
"Run, before it's too late. Before Scott does what you know he's capable of."
My blood ran cold. "What are you talking about?" I demanded, stepping closer despite myself. The guards tightened their grip on her arms, but she didn't flinch. Instead, she smiled a slow, deliberate smile that sent a chill down my spine.
She was serious about it. She was fraining nothing about everything.
"Oh, you're smarter than this, Rosalie," She sneered. "Don't pretend you don't know what I mean. Your precious pups are out there in the human world, vulnerable and unprotected. Scott's already there. Do you think he'll wait for you to get there before he… finishes the job?"
The world seemed to tilt beneath me. My breath caught in my throat, and for a moment, I couldn't move. My heart pounded, Rose snarling in panic and rage.
"You're lying," I whispered, but even as I said the words, doubt crept in. Scott. The man who had already proven he had no boundaries, no conscience. Could he be there? Could he…
'No. No!' I shook all negativities off my head.
"Am I?" Briana's voice was irritating, though it was in sing-song. "Why don't you find out? Oh, but you'd better hurry. Who knows how much time you have left?"
That was all it took. I turned on my heel and bolted down the hallway, my mind racing as fast as my feet, not minding her laughter.
I heard the guards calling after me, but I didn't stop. I couldn't stop. My children, my babies, were in danger, and I had to reach them before it was too late.
My wolf pushed me forward, her urgency blending with my own. My vision blurred with tears, but I blinked them away. There was no time for tears or hesitation. Every second counted.
As I reached the exit of the pack house, one of the guards stepped in front of me, his expression torn between duty and concern. "Luna, you can't leave! The Alpha ordered you to stay indoors. It's not safe out there."
"Move," I growled, my voice trembling with authority and desperation. "My children are in danger. I don't care about orders."
He hesitated, but I could see the doubt in his eyes. He wanted to stop me, but he also knew better than to stand in the way of a mother protecting her pups.
With a reluctant nod, he stepped aside, and I didn't wait for another moment. I darted past him and into the night, my heart pounding in my chest.
The wind whipped against my face and I shifted to my wolf after a very long time, not minding the pain. I ran into the night with my mind consumed by thoughts of my children.
Scott couldn't have them. He wouldn't. I would tear apart anyone who dared to harm them.
"Hold on," I whispered, my voice breaking. "Mummy is coming."
And I ran faster, praying that I wasn't already too late.
